On all quizzes and tests. I give an extra credit challenge that often involves creativity.  On my first quiz, the “Extra Credit” question is ”Ask me a challenge.”  After the quiz. I construe the questions to the class and say them.  Since students are unsure of what I am looking for, some ask math questions while others ordain ask more personal ones desire this one I received Friday ”If you were a observe where would you go for the pass?” For this blog to be successful we NEED your participation.  PLEASE let us know what direction you would desire this blog to act:  continue this go or go away a new one.

"Teacher?s Held to ?Higher Scruitny?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-02 18:15:03

measure year. I had the pleasure of taking a course in Educational Law at UIC.  It was quite eye opening in command but what realy peaked my interest are the current Supreme Court rulings on teachers and their ‘morality.’  Basically without getting too letigious. “teachers because they are responsible for the moral upbringing and models of American democracy are held to a higher scruitny in terms of morals and values.”  Although there has not been a specific ruling on the following two examples below the law as written leaves these types of issues open for interpretation by school boards across the Nation.  I am posting it on this communicate in order to a) alter you aware of the challenges that you’ll approach going into a profession that values ‘discretion,’ among other things yet wants technology to be at the forefront of a your bring home the bacon.  You as young people going into the profession ordain have to balance the amount of communication the propriety of the affect be and what messages enjoin and indirect these would sent to your educate and students.  Finally your ‘rights’ as citizens are put to the evaluate and according to current law limited somewhat because of the title. “teacher,” that you direct.  Read these two stories of young women who either were denied certification or fired from their teaching positions due to ‘my lay’ photos that were found.  Let me know what you evaluate.  My OWN personal tip… act down your my lay pages and/or be very careful- there are no ‘laws’ written to protect populate’s privacy on the change state forum which is the internet.

"Notes from an Academic Librarian" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 16:43:33

convey you Michael for asking me to guest affix to TTW. I enjoy reading TTW and I am a believer in technology but sight that there are times when the theory works better than practice. I find that people undergo to undergo a alleviate aim with technology and with their own craft to successfully incorporate technology into their daily work. You have to experience it is going to bring home the bacon and you undergo to be willing to assess it and rework it until you get it right. Hi! I am Donna Goodwyn. continue of compose and Assistant Professor from the A. C. Buehler Library at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst. Illinois just 14 miles outside of Chicago. As an academic librarian. I inform information literacy in its many different forms to classes in relation to assignments and to my academic community throughout the year. We also undergo workshops for our faculty where we work with things like Blackboard wikis blogs and databases etc to alter to the life desire learning on campus. I am also blessed to teach in both our English and Education departments. One categorise which I really enjoy teaching is called EDU112. Education Technology where I help to show pre-service teachers how they can incorporate technology into their curriculum. Another teach with a few other librarians from our college is The Great Chicago Library class where we act Honors English students and visit a variety of great libraries in the Chicagoland area. I have incorporated a blogging component into both classes and it works well as a learning tool and vehicles for collaboration and exploration of creativity. The hotlinks categorise blogs and they are used as tools and are rather messy like my desk but they have a purpose which is to teach and to experiment. As an academic I also undergo had the great opportunity of working with Associated Colleges of Illinois in their Mentor Online a presenter in ACI’s Center for Success in High Needs Schools. As Stated on their website:“ACI’s bear on for Success in High-Need Schools seeks to change state the achievement gap between low-income students and their more affluent peers by providing a key ingredient for success: excellent teachers for high-need schools. By helping low-income students make the evaluate today we can create a more productive society and verify America’s future in the global economy.”Here I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of teachers working in the Chicago School system who are actually trying to integrate technology into their teaching and what is so great is that they tell me what actually works for them and what doesn’t. And it so funny that TTW has had numerous posts which also communicate about these problems and conce rns that people are having with technology. But the teachers also tell me about their success stories and how much the students enjoy and retain what they have learned in these dynamic lessons that incorporate technology. Some of the problems they encounter are slow internet lines filtering equipment failure software upgrades and lack of training and understanding from their administration. So we discuss solutions and ways around the system including low cost answers using the internet and simple equipment solutions. And sometimes blogs don’t always do exactly what you want them to. Our ACI blog provides good information but it is not getting comments and the interaction we had hoped for. So we asked our teachers why they weren’t c ommenting and they gave us great answers like they didn’t readily have the web communicate they were not comfortable having their names with their posts they didn’t have the time during the educate year and some had problems getting a good internet connection. So our group is going to cater in June to try and alter our communicate more collaborative for both our teachers and mentors. It proves that even good technology needs tweaking to work for each individual situation. So above was just a little about what I undergo learned about technology and teaching and a few things I do as an academic librarian. I undergo been with Elmhurst College for over 17 years and I am a tenured faculty member who has recently served as Chair of Faculty Council and so I guess I could now be called a lifer. But you know. I haven’t been bored yet! I like the college campus the resources I have at my fingertips and most importantly th e freedom to explore teaching and technology. I enjoy academic librarianship and back up students in the library science handle to take an internship at a college or uni versity library to see if it something you might be interested in doing. Thank you for reading—Donna

"Curating Knowledge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 14:19:52

I was reading recently about an information management system used by Cornell to integrate knowledge across disciplines connecting people and ideas among its many colleges institutes and research centers. Pondering some possible applications for this system in my own bring home the bacon. I recalled how little attention was paid to library and information services at my alma mater and the need during its convert to develop the New College library into a bona fide curator of knowledge networks associated with the school. I suppose it all goes approve to the perpetual problem of pretending to be a college while delivering as few services to faculty and students as possible. Perhaps with the imminent ameliorate of the governance financial and curricular systems the trustees can also be forced to treat basic academic needs — desire a functioning library system — with the respect they deserve.
