"Princeton Review and College Rankings: Not So Important to Students" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:34:39

The Princeton Review has just published the 2008 enumerate of Top 366 schools. With the recent criticism of college ranking systems the Princeton review sets itself apart by enlisting student participation to be colleges according to the student’s personal experiences. As pointed out by these college ranking systems benefit more the college than they assist potential students in selecting the best college for them. The “institutions of higher learning” use the rankings to leverage prestige and bragging rights. Even though the Princeton analyse enlists student input to their ranking system it still does not lade up as a consumer review which would be more useful to students. When I was deciding on a college. I did not look up the best colleges in the nation. Instead. I decided on a career goal the cost ceiling (budget) that I would be willing to pay to attend college and the environment that would best suit my study habits and preferences. But all these considerations ended up on the approve burner when I was offered a full scholarship to California State University. Long Beach (CSULB). In the end cost became the number one concern—the scholarship would greatly decrease my out-of-pocket expenses because tuition books parking and other incidentals would be covered by the scholarship. Students deciding on a college are often influenced by a number of variants—family history religion and high school counselors just to name a few. For example while researching an article reflecting the ranking of CSULB as one of the West Coast’s top 25 colleges. I interviewed CSULB’s beloved former president. Robert Maxson who pointed out that students and professors are the approve bone of any college. His point: any ranking system would reflect the level of excellence to which students and professors aspire. What if your school ended up on the list of Top Party Schools? Is that a reputation a so-called respected institution would be proud of? I doubt it. CSULB has probably avoided such a reputation by having a “Dry Campus” policy. However. I undergo heard of students choosing a school based on its reputation for awesome parties. Students most likely choose a “party educate” because that is the environment in which they want to study—many young adults consider the college years a time of experimentation and exploration. In differentiate my main college goal was to obtain a Bachelors degree—which is exactly what I did. In the end the college that one attends is in large part determined by the letters of acceptance or rejection that are received from schools to which a student has applied. So in all honesty how much influence does the Princeton Review undergo on the decisions of potential college students? Probably very little.

"The Best Colleges Are Looking for Authenticity" posted by ~Ray

claims that the upcoming battle on spending is giving the GOP an opportunity "to reclaim their position as a party that can be counted on by mature people to rest athwart fiscal imprudence and onrushing socialism." OK lets compete some poker. What are the odds that the opportunity ordain be taken? population has grown to 4.4 million and is younger than any other European country with a median age of 33. And combined with the population of Northern Ireland by the year 2032 the whole island could be the 8 million before the famine set in in the 19th century. The population had grown by over 300,00 since the previous survey four years ago; the growth is change integrity between births and immigrants. The largest increases in immigration since 2002 have been from Poland. Lithuania and Nigeria. The latest count showed 63,276 Poles living permanently in Ireland up from 2,124 four years earlier. Were back in Austria after a few days in Italy. This time were in the Zillertal (just east of Innsbruck overlooking a river that flows into the Inn). The scenery is stunning the hospitality marvelous. The Dutch have discovered it; Americans seem not to have at least not as a pass destination (though one can ski in Hintertux at the end of the valley change surface now). Met one of the many maternal cousins in the valley at dinner tonight; she presented us with a bottle of homemade schnapps (Obstler made from apples and pears). Sehr schmackhaft. Our Hungarian waiter insisted however that they do it still better in Hungary. Our Bosnian waiter didnt offer an opinion. The only thing disturbing the local scene is an establishment my son has taken to calling the American embassy: McDonalds. But its at the beginning of the valley and its quite overwhelmed by the mountains. Its not hard to express from this WaPo story on that both the pundits and the so-called strategists be to emphasize the problems he ordain encounter with his late entry his lack of arganization and infrastructure brood over which week or day or hour he should announce to get a few days media boost etc. But Thompson seems only to want to "cerebrate to the populate." And with statements desire these he might be able to do that: Is his after Labor Day annoucement too late? "I wasnt there when they made those rules so Im not abiding by them. Weve got plenty of time." Is he appealing to the conservative base? "I am unabashedly pro-life. I am pro-Second Amendment. And I dont apologize for the United States of America. This country has shed more blood for the freedom of other people than all the other nations in the history of the world combined and Im tired of people feeling desire theyve got to apologize for America." It seems to me that both Thompsons late entry--which also seems "the closest thing to a successful of a presidential candidate in more than a half-century"--and the reasons for the late entry ordain be entirely to his advantage. One operative in the WaPo article claims that with all the "top activists and operatives" gone to other campaigns. Thompson will be relegated to running a campaign based on his "personality and issues." Could that possibly be to his disadvantage given the rest of the handle? Weve made our way to Italy and have dashed through Venice and Florence. The latter came off as more likeable than the former though Im willing to accuse the weather for some of it. The only other thing Ill say is that the next measure I visit Venice it will be after winning a lottery. Tomorrow we continue back to Austria to tour more family roots (in the Zillertal off the Inn which is where my maternal grandfather comes from). I have no idea what to evaluate. Havent seen much in the way of news (object for the papers they transfer out on the trains--which means Ive read a couple of Austrian papers and one German since Ive been over here). alter now. I think Id prefer the Renaissance at least on aesthetic grounds. One other say about the difference between this touristic undergo in the old country and the last one: there has been a remarkable increase (at least in this Rip van beams eyes) in the be of lay Eastern and South Asian tourists. And since Im not exactly moving in high categorise circles while Im over here. Im talking about folks who look vaguely lay class. Interesting. In conversations with my fellow Ashlanders over the hot pass it has change state clear to me that they are not yet engaged in politics. But theyre fixin to be engaged as my kinfolk in Arkansas would say! And they are especially looking send to former Senator Fred Thomspon entering the race. Why? They are bored and they think Thompson is more genuine more understandable more conservative and in command more exciting than the other Republican candidates. This column is worth reading because it is in essential agreement with the opinions I run into in the local watering holes. Thomspons striaght and hard rhetoric will be the book that gets Republicans (and maybe.

"College rankings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 08:13:42

The U. S. News & World Report College Ranking command has hit the newsstands amid growing concerns that the rankings lie at the core of the frenzy that swirls around the college-going affect. The answer is a resounding "no" to all of the above. While much of the consternation and posturing about the rankings comes from campus leaders it turns out that few are reticent when it comes to heralding the rankings as validation of their respective places among higher education's best. Just as troubling is the media's penchant for celebrating the results of top-ranked institutions at the depreciate of more thorough journalistic assessments of the ranking affect and its troubling force on students families and our society. It's time to call this cheat on the college-going public for what it is. In doing so it is difficult to accuse U. S. News. Frankly attempting to define the mythical pecking order of colleges for a consumer society begging for labels is a cause to be perceived business move. The problem is that colleges can't seem to back up themselves from feeding the results into their public relations machines and the media sight them newsworthy. If there is an injustice perpetrated by rankings of any choose it is perpetuation of the very risky notion that one displace is quantifiably better than another. I say risky because many families believe or want to accept in the pecking request and they'll do whatever it takes to get their young prodigies into the "best" colleges possible. As a prove we are seeing the emergence of a generation of young people programmed for college at the expense of lives well-lived. The irony is that success in any college examine must begin with and be centered on the student. Rather than creating a dynamic that supports a student-centered affect the ranking phenomenon reinforces an obsession with the destination. While purporting to show the "best colleges," it fails to recognize what is best for the individual student. This review of rankings is alter on the money in my opinion. As the president of the university where I graduated from and now bring home the bacon recently said. "While we may not agree with the theory or underlying assumptions used in the US News rankings believing that the ranking criteria change and not the schools themselves nevertheless we must be cognizant of the cater of these such ranking systems." (paraphrased). I bring home the bacon in admissions and I see it all the time; families (especially parents) are concerned with looking at schools based soley on rankings and very little other objective criteria. Therefore many students are choosing schools that do not fit into their true identity of what write of educate they are looking for. Because of this as the author of this post points out many very good quality yet lesser known schools are struggling to compete for enrollment with the larger and more affluent institutions - simply because they undergo to answer to the "critics" as to why they are not ranked.
