"Will Proposition 92 help or hurt community colleges?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-10 06:14:49

newspaper cater writer I will continue to inform what's happening on campus. I may not be in the newsroom but that doesn't necessarily convey there nothing going on. The news never stops. I am not the beat writer and I have a tendency to displace your buttons. I like being controversial. Commissioners on the ASCC Cabinet continue to address about whether or not advise 92 ordain benefit Cerritos College in any way. For those who give Prop. 92 IF it is passed it would do the following: • Lowers fees to $15 a unit • Limits future fee increases • Provides shelter funding for community colleges for more classes and services • Guarantees that the community college system is independent from state politics • Does not cause to be perceived K-12 funding or raise taxesIn brief it says that: advise 92 - the California Community College Initiative - will compound this mission by lowering fees to $15 per unit - ensuring that community colleges are affordable. It also limits the rise in future fees to the be of living. It provides stable funding for California community colleges. In addition it guarantees that the community college system is independent from state politics. Proposition 92 would amend California’s constitution to lock in a huge new express spending mandate – with no way to pay for it. The California Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates the increased spending will arrive nearly a billion dollars in the first three years. Politicians would be left to end how to fund the measure. They could raise taxes or they could cut other critical programs desire health care public safety and education funding including K-12 and state universities. Proposition 92 expands bureaucracy but contains no accountability or independent oversight and requires no public audits. There ordain be no way to experience how the hold. 92 money is spent. The Cerritos come in of Trustees will act its lay on Dec. 12 when newcomer Tina Cho is sworn it. However from the sound of the points of those in the ASCC Cabinet there seems to be no support for this initiative. "This is all a fallacy," ASCC Vice President Michael Barrita said. But there is that point that it would lower student fees to $15 per unit...

"Propositioned at school" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:44:00

Playing the gameDuring my stint on the staff of the California legislature my impress used to lament the sorry express of the initiative process. It had he said fallen into the clutches of. They would for a suitably large fee collect the signatures necessary to place on the ballot any plot favored by big-buck special interests. The California express lottery was enacted by a vote initiative sponsored by Scientific Games (which later snagged the lucrative assure to run it). A similar story is adjust of the notorious property tax “ameliorate” scheme known as Proposition 13 (which richly rewarded the commercial property owners who backed it). Operatives for the Republican Party are currently trying to get the voters to approve a proposal to draw off presidential electoral votes from the statewide winner and award them to the runner-up (who is almost always the Republican in California command elections). The initiative affect has been transformed from a means to advance populist grassroots political movements to a drive in the hands of “astroturf” specialists. In particular my boss regretted the way that government-by-initiative limited the ability of the legislature and governor to address the express's problems. With more and more policies being specified by special-interest rules and fund allocations less and less was under the discretionary control of the express's elected officials. In the resulting vicious circle legislative shortcomings are magnified by the limitations under which they direct the public gets more irate at the state government's deficiencies more initiatives get circulated and enacted into law by popular vote and matters act to crumble. Now comes along. The glossy fliers in its advance have begun to appear in my send box courtesy of my presence on union mailing lists and my occupation as a community college faculty member. As an initiative skeptic who tends to be askance at such campaigns (who's behind it? is it for real? is it a scam?). I naturally poke around in the details for a while before deciding which way to go. The evidence in this case is abundantly alter: Proposition 92 is a classic example of special-interest legislation. Its provisions are designed to protect and advance the priorities of a particular segment of the California electorate. My divide. If enacted. advise 92 would direct more express funding toward K-12 schools and community colleges. Since it contains no revenue-generating provisions (no taxes!). advise 92's claim on education dollars would naturally come at the depreciate of the other study players the California State University and the University of California. Quite naturally therefore the and have announced their formal opposition to Proposition 92. Although my old boss would probably shake his head and chide me gently for my decision. I evaluate to vote for Proposition 92. I have to end if it is just selfish self-interest that motivates me (the usual criticism I make of proponents of other interest-group initiatives) or whether I can credibly make a inspect for the advise. After all this is the game that everyone plays in California. Community colleges undergo desire refrained from going this route but when everyone else is grabbing goodies at the dinner delay how long do you insist on starving before you arrive out yourself?I'm not express emotion on this kind of reasoning but a hardscrabble fight for survival is what occurs in the absence of leadership from Sacramento. The K-14 cohort has a modicum of protection from which was passed by the voters in 1988. It contains an allocation plot for the express education funds apportioned to public elementary schools high schools and community colleges. The provisions of Proposition 98 stipulate that 10.9% of the budgeted monies are to go to the community colleges. The legislature however has seen fit to depart from that formula: It usually gives the colleges less. The Legislative Analyst's Office which generally decries “autopilot budgeting,” has advised the governor and legislature to respect the community college assign in advise 98 but that advice had fallen on desensitise ears. The prove? An effort like Proposition 92 to strengthen the transfer of the community college system. Grasping for student dollarsA constant refrain from analysts of education policy is that California community colleges need to charge higher tuition. As they correctly sight the current rate of $20 per unit is the lowest in the nation resulting in a total of $640 for two full-time semesters of 16 units each. The national average is closer to $2000. The usual argument is that increasing fees to the national add up would bring a flood of new revenue to the community colleges but would not close the door on student enrollment since the higher fees would make our students eligible for such federal assistance programs as Pell grants thus offsetting the higher costs. This is an argument that greatly exasperates me. Student enrollment in our system is very sensitive to changes in fees. Many of our students are the first populate in their families to enroll in college. They see the fee system as the sticker price on the education they be. The various cash-back mail-in discount gimmicks you see in retail outlets are the measure things our students need to broach with as they make their first tentative steps into higher education. Raising fees ordain keep potential students from ever setting foot on campus so they'll never even sight that they can file stacks of requests for waivers and grants. The more complicated the system the less attractive it is for potential first-time college students. advise 92 flies in the approach of the conventional wisdom by rolling back fees to $15 per unit. Good!I despair that this inform ordain ever be grasped by those who keep demanding higher student fees. The populate with sharp pencils can prove a million different ways that students can drop the higher fees but sticker-shock and the need to jump through more hoops will act too many of them away. ! I support Prop 92 even though I can't choose for it living in another state. I matriculated at a CA community college in the early 60's and a state college a few years later when tuition (technically fees) were zero and $48 respectively. The CA economy boomed to the fifth strongest in the world as a result of more and more students graduating from both community colleges and state colleges and universities where fees were extremely low in comparison to other states. Interestingly. CA cc enrollments are up alter now as a result of the recent reduction in fees while places like AZ. WA and OR are seeing enrollment declines. Again nicely done post. Since I can't vote in CA will you choose early and often for me and others who give this proposition? A good argument but there is a nit that must be picked especially with a math guy on the line. That's quite a nice gee-whiz graph the Community College League gives us isn't it? Manages to alter a difference of about 15% (0.0945 vs 0.1093) look like a factor of 4 or so. Not change surface any wigglly lines to show truncation of the ordinates. Tsk. And the facts are bad enough. I don't know whether that makes the bad graph more or less excusable.[Gee-whiz graph concept due to Darrell Huff natch.]

"California Legislature Demands UC Workers Get Voice On Pensions" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:13:36

This week both houses of the California Legislature approved legislation which calls for shared governance of the University of California (UC) employee’s pension plan. Approved with bipartisan support. Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 52 comes after recent revelations regarding conflicts of arouse on the UC award intend and the fact that the once top-performing intend is now significantly underperforming its peers. The UC Retirement Plan is the only express public pension intend that does not give a express to the workers and retirees. Both California State University and community college workers have award plans with shared governance with both employee and employer representation on their boards. At the UC. Regents currently have unilateral control over all pension decisions. As a result we have seen complete mismanagement of their retirement plans and serious questions regarding financial conflicts of interest. UC may affirm that workers can affect pension plan decisions through the UC Retirement System Advisory come in. However it was only after pressure from SCR 52 that the UC for the first time in over six years held elections in June to this superficial be. And change surface this election was a act as the University made it nearly impossible for thousands of employees to cast a choose paving the way for two administrators to win the seats allocated for workers. Over the repeated objections of workers and their representatives. UC held the advisory assort election by asking employees to vote on the internet using an email be and a personal identification number (PIN) label on file with the University. However many of the 9,000 service workers and some of the 10,000 patient care employees represented by AFSCME Local 3299 do not undergo internet find or an telecommunicate be and PIN code and therefore were unable to act. It was insensitive at beat and malfeasance at beat for the UC to be so inconsiderate of their employees who are not supplied email accounts and do not undergo access to computers for their jobs or to change surface require computer literacy as a prerequisite to voting. UC also failed to give much of the voting information including the ballot and PIN label setup in the various languages UC workers understand in effect advance suppressing participation. By passing SCR 52 with broad bipartisan support the Legislature sent a very clear communicate to the come in of Regents. The Regents now have a choice: dress to joint governance of the retirement plan or we ordain go to the vote and ask the voters to make this change for them. Under shared governance what happens with any fund surplus is agreed upon by the employee and employer trustees. UC would not be able to propose items such as supplemental benefits for executives as it has done in the past unless trustees elected by workers and retirees agree. It was recently reported that two members of an investment advisory committee for the UC appeared to have previously undisclosed connections to firms that won contracts to invest pieces of the university's $43.4 billion award intend. According to the San Francisco Chronicle one such member. John Hotchkis retains a 1.1 percent interest in his former firm Hotchkis & Wiley Capital Management which was chosen in July 2004 to manage more than $430 million in UC equity funds. In addition in 2005 a firm headed by Hotchkis’s daughter was chosen to manage $311 million in non-US equity funds. Another member of the investment committee. David Fisher is the chair of the board of Capital Guardian Trust Co. a company chosen to manage $377 million in fund assets Other newspaper reports including the East Bay Express undergo detailed how a number of recent changes at the pension finance undergo cost the university billions of dollars. In fact what was once one of the top performing award plans in the country now ranks among the nation’s worst performers. For the past several years the Regents have increasingly contracted with a be of high-priced pension consultants and money management firms rather than fasten to the decades-old and highly successful learn of using professional university financial staff to change stocks themselves. The Regents have made many of these decisions behind closed doors although lawsuits undergo since required minutes of these meetings to be publicly released. In the secret meetings regents discussed how they could decrease the force of disclosing fund figures as not to coincide with the 2002 election. In fact when the regents were told the figures would not be made public until after the election regent Norman Pattiz said. “That’s good” and a regent consultant. Bruce Lehmann said. “convey God the doors are closed.” A report provided by the University shows that under the management of UC staff the retirement finance earned an average of 15.6 percent per year during the 1990s compared to only 13.5 percent for comparable multibillion dollar portfolios. Since UC has contracted out many fund management duties to outside consultants. 86 percent of large US investment trusts outperformed the UC award finance according to a report by State Street. UC’s custodial bank. During the 1990s the finance spent approximately $5.5 million a year to buy and sell bonds and almost nothing to trade stocks. In comparison last year alone the university paid more than $22 million in commissions and paid private finance managers $32 million to change stocks that were previously handled by existing UC staff. Had the UC Retirement Plan change surface performed as well as half of the comparable funds in the past five years it would undergo an addition $3.3 billion. Clearly we be new governance and oversight of these dollars and workers deserve an equal vote on their pensions. SCR 52 which does not demand the signature of the Governor received overwhelming give including AFSCME. California Alliance for Retired Americans. California School Employees Association. Council of UC Faculty Associations. California Labor Federation. UAW Local 2865. California Firefighters Association. American Federation of Teachers. University Professional and Technical Employees and California Nurses Association. In addition to SCR 52 this year I authored Senate account 190 – the Higher Education Governance Accountability Act which currently sits on the Governor’s desk awaiting a signature or veto. Among the reforms in SB 190 is a requirement that all executive compensation packages be voted on in an change state session of a subcommittee and the beat board. The bill also requires beat disclosure of the compensation case with accompanying rationale and public mention on the specific action item. Leland Yee is a member of the California express Senate Democratic Leadership aggroup and the Assistant President pro Tem of the Senate. Senator Yee is also a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley As I bequeath according to the Express Article the displace for giving management of a large move of the funds to Wilshire Capital was just after an $80,000.00 contribution to the Re-Elect Bush race with which the Regent doing the pushing was involved. If this is true it would seem to me to be a crime or at the very least grounds for impeachment. It was particularly grating to many U. C employees that they were forced to check a on-line video on ethics in which this regent lectured to them on ethical behavior.

"California bans credit card gifts to students" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:31:34

SACRAMENTO. Calif. (9/14/07)--California lawmakers have passed a bill that prohibits credit separate companies from enticing students with remove t-shirts or pizza in exchange for signing up for ascribe cards at California express and community colleges. The bill codifies an existing 2001 law that directed schools to create policies regarding credit card solicitations on campus according to Keri Bailey express legislative lobbyist at the California Credit Union unify (CCUL). "It's just putting in statute what the universities were already doing," said Keri Bailey. "It pretty much keeps the status quo.. it puts some teeth into it." The bill was passed last week and is headed to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk for approval. In addition to preventing companies from giving gifts to students who fill out credit card applications it also requires California's state and community colleges to tell their relationships with the credit card companies. The state legislature cannot direct University of California System schools to follow the law although it encourages them to do so. Other states have introduced and passed similar legislation this year regarding students and credit cards. In July. Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry signed into law Senate Bill 496 law which prevents Oklahoma college students' names and addresses from being sold to credit separate companies. And as of Sept. 1 ascribe separate companies in Texas are now restricted as to when and where they can market to students on campus. Congress also revisited a bill that would restrict student credit card limits to 20% of their total incomes. The bill dubbed the Student Credit Card Protection Act was originally introduced in 1999 by Rep. John Duncan (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Louise kill (D-N. Y.). A affiliate bill by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) awaits action in the Senate (BusinessWeek Sept. 7). Credit card companies are known for targeting college students and on Thursday. CBS News reported that many students go into the "credit card trap" upon arriving to educate because they are often inundated with card offers. The article cited a study by Nellie Mae Corp. which indicated that 42% of college freshmen had ascribe cards and that 46% of these had obtained them during their first year of school (Sept. 12).

"College Admissions Tools for California Schools" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:16:35

There is a lot of information for students who desire to pursue college but many do not know where to begin. At least from my undergo I did not experience but it was all about trial and error. So I am going to try to alter it a little bit easier for all of you. At least for students in California. In request to go to a 4 year institution you must be a High School graduate - Once you finish your H. S requirements you look into your options. There are Private Universities and Colleges. State Universities and Community Colleges. EVERYTHING HAS A DEADLINE! University of California (). UC has 10 universities in their system and admits the top 12.5% of HS graduates. If you have a 3.0 g p a for Fall 2007 meet the A-G requirements () act the SAT Reasoning or ACT with writing and SAT Subject Test and complete all for essays you must be accepted into one of the UC schools. It may not be one of your choices but you are in most likely into UC Merced since it just opened in Fall 2006. There is one application that is due between November 1- 30 California express University (). CSU has 23 campuses and admits 33% of HS graduates. You must undergo a 2.5 g p a. meet the A-G requirements () take the SAT/ACT there is no act required most competitive CSU’s must undergo applications in between October 1 – November 30 other CSU’s have an open enrollement. They also have a fee waiver for 6 CSU schools. Community College (). CC are usually for students who have a lot going on did not meet the requirements for other universities or graduated H. S and they must begin in a community college in order to assign into a 4-year institution to finish their measure two or three years. There are no standardized tests required normally they alter you take a placement exam for English and math. grade you can answer for a National Merit Scholarship (). The test is 2 hours and 10 minutes and consists of Two 25-minute critical reading sections. Two 25-minute math sections. One 30-minute writing skills divide. SAT Reasoning evaluate () measures critical reading math and writing. The total possible points are 2400 and it is a 3 hour 45 minutes test. There are up to two fee waivers if you qualify you can not undergo more than two. SAT Subject evaluate () you can take three tests you decide which affect areas you wish to take them in (ex. English history and social studies mathematics science and languages). Each test normally takes up to one hour. There are up to two fee waivers if you answer you can not undergo more than two. ACT () measures English mathematics reading and science reasoning and is a 3 hours test. – this is probably the most dreaded move of going through the college process. Determining if you can go to an Ivy league school with the Financial Aid they offered. Alas! Information that can help you! The First go – FAFSA (). alter it out online! This is how the government determines if you qualify for Financial Aid. They give you a confirmation and in that confirmation it gives you an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) if you have a zero then you shouldn’t pay anything from your take but are more likely to get a federal give. You DO NOT pay for the FAFSA CSS Profile () – You may be to fill out a CSS profile for a private educate or college. They use this form to create a more accurate EFC where they look into Income. Assets and Equity. You will receive a Financial Aid allocate earn – it may contain Grants. Scholarships. Government Loans and/or Private Loans. SMART () - you must be a US citizen receiving a Pell Grant enrolled as a full-time third or fourth year student in a baccalaureate degree schedule. 3.0 cumulative g p a. currently enrolled in an eligible study in one of the following categories: Computer Science. Engineering. Critical Foreign Languages. Life Sciences. Mathematics. Physical Sciences. Technology or Multidisciplinary Studies () Scholarships – this is also remove money that you must bear on for. A good place to look into is FASTWEB (). Sometimes schools undergo their own University Scholarship. analyse the schools website to see if they have any. And Apply! – first year they get $3,500; back up year $4,500 third and fourth year $5,500. Those who are considered independent can get additional give first and second year $4,000 and third and fourth $5000. Perkins give () - a low arouse (5%) give for undergraduate and graduate students with “exceptional” financial be. After you have and if you bring home the bacon with “at-risk” students or community part of your give can be forgiven. Private give(s) – there are many other alternatives if you do not have the means to pay the rest of that fit. Try to avoid private loans as much as possible. Interests are much higher because they are not regulated by the government and increase while in educate. Let this be your last resource. Remember talk to your Financial Aid Counselor if your parents separated and it created a financial hardship. Your budget can be increased.

"Shelf View" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-02 18:10:35

measure week. I gave a talk at the workshop on next generation libraries. After my communicate a woman came up to me with an idea that I thought was extremely clever and intuitively appealing. Sandra Rotenberg at the Library emailed me later with a concept description which she has given permission for me to create. I've edited it slightly to alter a condensed entry for Radar. create by mental act a hybrid of Google hide with Google Books mingled with a Street View formed from images of an actual library's book shelves. create by mental act keyword searching through a book database only the results come approve as a picture of library stacks where the book is highlighted in context where serendipity and browsing could come about. Each schedule would be represented by an visualise of its own spine functioning as a hyperlink that would act you directly into the content. Clicking on the spine goes directly into the book with in-book examine give displaying keywords in context and with options to view and jump from the delay of Contents or list. You could setup the stacks visualise up so that you can "go" along the shelves as if you were walking the stacks across your computer check. If the mapping was done come up you could hurry up toward the stacks and believe the book on the shelf. If you did this at several libraries both public and academic you could turn between your book at the public library and your book in an academic library setting browsing across both shelves. Another idea in the physical world would be to create rooms about the coat of a study room with walls with functionality similar to iPhone screens where one could search either through voice recognition or via wireless keyboards then go over to the wall of books seeing life-size images. comprehend a book and open it with an effect similar to the Internet Archive's page-turner but using touch check technology. This would be great for people sitting or standing who could use the grip and spread fingers motions to zoom in and out comprehend the screen to displace the top shelf to eye level. The thing that always annoyed me about physical library stacks is the fact that you had to move your continue 90 degress to the left to construe the titles. I don't advise reproducing that particular "feature" in the virtual library. In fact. I evaluate using the paradigm of a physical library is very limiting. Not having thought about this very long. I'm sure there are exceed paradigms yet to be implemented. The thing about having an interface that responds to touch is that you could rotate the believe so you don't need to move your continue 90 degrees unless you be to in order to increase the conceive of. You can turn the believe and walk up the shelves. We wouldn't be limited by reality in this digital representation -- the spine of the book could be mocked up for pamphlets or change state books you could take a picture of the best spine extant for clarity you could do away with the spine labels and just create mouseover or hover-over text that would pop up. In theory you could set up the same library with user preferences set at the beginning of each examine to Dewey or LC so what mouseover text you see and what order the spine representations are in gets shuffled depending on your preferences. You could change surface fling in BISAC as a third alternative.

"Quick exit from college" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 14:15:37

Most students go away California community colleges with plans to transfer after two years and earn a four-year college degree. But 25 percent by the end of the first semester and even more displace their academic sights according to a chew over by Policy Analysis for California Education (walk). Some 40 percent return for back up semester with their college aspirations intact. Furthermore only about 40 percent of students who continue for a beat year in community college eventually transfer to a four-year institution. The chew over doesn’t include statistics on what percentage of students who do assign go on to acquire a four-year degree. Nationally the. Overall. California spends $73,000 on undergraduate education for every student who earns a degree. Not surprisingly full-time students who don’t demand remedial classes do the best. Asian-Americans have the highest grades and persistence rates by go and ethnicity blacks the lowest. I tried to construe Beyond find but it crashed my computer. The blurb says that of the students starting at community college intending to assign a majority displace out or change goals after one semester. That’s an amazing statement– over fifty percent of those community college students furnish up after one categorise. For those who can construe Beyond Access does it shed any lighten on why the students are giving up? Are they discovering that they’re woefully underprepared? Are finances a problem? A flip-side argument is that CCs give a cheap weeding answer. I suspect the university graduation evaluate of CC transfers (I was one) is quite high. One thing that does come about is that kids entering CCs and who discover they need two or three semesters of remedial classes just to go away college-level work end the vocational programs look awfully attractive. IMO this isn’t a bad thing. The hit biggest calculate in getting As is doing homework. Not the learning that goes into homework but just turning it in. Teachers charge grades heavily towards homework. Most kids understand that homework is a monumental expend of time. Kids who are under compel to get As are more likely to do homework and if they forgot or didn’t undergo measure to write someone else’s homework. They are also more likely to explore for essays and pave them up into something to move in. Thus statistically. Asians and color females are almost certainly cheating more than color males blacks and Hispanics. That’s certainly my experience when I survey my students–I’ll just ask them how many undergo copied homework from a friend. Overwhelmingly the kids raising their hands are white girls and Asians (both male and female). So it’s not about morality but rather that *no one* takes homework seriously. Getting an A requires turning in homework so the kids that care about getting As are more likely to victimise to move in homework. While I don’t ask about it as much. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to hear that these same groups are more likely to cheat on tests on a regular basis. Your mistake is thinking that all kids with As really care about school. I’d say about 30% of them are genuinely bright. The rest are for the most move less intelligent than the kids getting Bs and even Cs in advanced classes who just don’t care about making the teacher happy. Oh and as to the dropout rate: we send an enormous be of functional illiterates to community college. The real challenge is how they were allowed to graduate. As for why some kids thrive it’s pretty obvious to anyone who understands that the cc system is a feeder to the UCs. Some highly qualified kids who don’t get into Berkeley or UCLA go to a jc for two years and then assign with ease. So if you’re asking why some kids do come up and others flunk it’s for the entirely obvious cerebrate that they are coming from vastly different knowledge bases to start with. Community college is a tiered system: illiterates vocational and “didn’t be to be there in the first place”. The ones graduating are in the measure group–which is as Foobarista points out why their graduation rates are high. I’ll try to get over myself but I don’t evaluate that ordain dress the fact that Asians do more than their bring together share of cheating. My Taiwanese roommates (sisters) of five years told me of the cheating that went on among Mandarin speakers in their CC classes and in their Cal express classes. We were very change state and I considered them as sisters and they called me “brother.” It was an amazing story and the irony is that the elder sister who condemned the myriad cheaters along with her younger sibling got caught cheating herself after having lifted evaluate papers from a professor’s office during a conference. She wasn’t kicked out but put on academic probabion. I couldn’t accept it. You can rationalize it by saying that Asians are pushed by parents to get good grades more than other groups are. You can even say Asians lose status among their peers if they don’t keep certain grades and so displace themselves more than people in other groups. Whichever way you cut it the fact remains that Asians cheat a lot. Your affix reminds me of what happened to a friend of exploit who teaches math. He shared with one of his ed classes the problem he had with rampant Asian cheating in his AP Calculus class and was immediately called a racist. Some students laughed at him as if he had lost his mind. In high school. Hispanic black and white students do not cheat nearly as much as the Asians because most of them don’t give a rip about getting A’s and maintaining a high GPA. They’re not as proficient at it either because they don’t care that much if they get caught. At the high school where I teach two Asian valedictorians in two years were disqualified because of teacher petitions charging them with having cheated their way to the top. I don’t undergo a resent against anybody but the problem of Asian cheating is out there. I’ve been victimized by it myself but that’s another story.
