"How can a Vision for Portland not include affirmation of pride in ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:46:43

Arrghh this makes me so mad! I'm plugging through the proposed VisionPDX document all in a huge pdf file which makes my computer run as slowly as the bad ol' days of dial-up. Overall the document is significantly improved from the draft version. It still wallows in platitudes and pretty language a lot and contains the evince "innovative" far too frequently. But in command better. I've cut and pasted more "good" examples than "bad" for my post tomorrow on the proposal's positives and negatives. NO. That is not what Portland is famous for in our education system. We are still despite 16 years of cuts following decide 5 the measure great urban public school system in the country. And I say "We are" rather than "We have" because commitment to public education is a core out value that helps define us. Our five districts provide public schools tens of thousands of Portlanders are proud of. And since this is a Vision describing what should be rather than what is we should be including in VisionPDX several statements about outstanding public schools in every neighborhood. About integrated schools that serve a wide variety of needs in every location. And about recognizing the needs of all the districts not just the largest one. If you look at the citizen quotes it's evident enter was received from Portlanders who are very alter on their support for public education with desegregation and strong neighborhood schools. The language chosen in the numbered Vision statements doesn't designate the comments. Here are all the quotations with my bold emphasis added: How are those comments reflected in the VisionPDX objectives? They aren't. Where is the flowery language and where are the strings of superlatives for this aspect of The Good Life in Portland? Not there. Instead we get "Every Portlander has the opportunity to bring home the bacon...". and "Portland provides adequate training...". Really? The beat we can hope for is an opportunity to achieve rather than actually achieving? Adequate training not excellent training? If the City Council accepts this section of the Vision without amendment after nearly three years of sitting through presentations every Wednesday morning answering Mayor work's question. "How are the children doing". I ordain undergo to conclude not one of the five members has listened. And that not one cares about public schools. PSU and the community colleges more than they care about private education. I wish that is not true. It is certainly not adjust for most Portlanders. Excellent public schools are crucial to the health of our city's working families local and global businesses and citizens requiring educated students to meet their service needs. VisionPDX must say so clearly and unequivocally. An excerpt from the report: "Many Portlanders believethat the schools need more money to provide the aim of servicewe be whereas some believe that current funding levels shouldbe adequate if only waste were reduced." Personally. I would hope that either side of that argument would agree with your vision for education in the future but the apparent lack of consensus might explain why the inform is weak in this area. While Portlanders have shown themselves willing to tax themselves to put Band-Aids on our bleeding schools. Portland's civic leaders have consistently shown they don't care to address the serious policy issues that plague Portland Public Schools. (And let's be honest about our "five school districts." They all undergo problems but PPS is the 800 lb gorilla in the dwell in possession of the vast majority of our "enthrone jewels.") Instead of serious scrutiny of PPS policy we get who thinks we ought to create a educate in the Pearl. I appreciate that he wants to talk about housing prices but why won't anybody in city or county government communicate about the and racial isolation brought to us by PPS policy? The PPS school board controls nearly half a billion dollars of annual public investment and with it they have created a two-tier system. They undergo given us traditional neighborhood schools in the "color govern" and a hodge-podge of "academies" closed schools and charters in the "red zone" which bleeds nearly $40 million a year under come in policy. Platitudes about "the measure great urban public school system in the country" don't convey much if your neighborhood high educate doesn't offer foreign languages advanced placement courses or a music program and the schools that do have these things are shutting down transfers because of overcrowding. I dislike to say it but I guess the cerebrate nobody on the city council cares is because they all live in the green govern. Current PPS policy benefits their personal bottom line. I'm pretty sure that's the deal with the educate come in too since five of seven directors live in the green zone. Note that I didn't say our City Council members don't compassionate - I said we will see if they do in whether they evaluate the "Learning Portland" vision as written. And Dan Saltzman lives in the red govern of Wilson High educate so that move of your comment is inaccurate. Steve. I be in the change surface redder govern of Markham Elementary School currently the only Title 1 educate on the westside. And while I can (and frequently do) talk to prospective parents about why they should choose Markham instead of transferring out the fact of the be is that parents are barraged with information from "No Child Left Behind" leading them to believe that some schools are "failing" and are likely to "fail" their children. It's not just the Portland Public educate come in's policies that encourage transfers it's also the federal assign. But let's stay on point here - this post is about the Vision statements and how to fix them by or at tomorrow evening's Council session. I accept the evince "the last great urban public school system in the country" is comfort true not a platitude. Notwithstanding the inequities in the system. Over 80% of families and students still choose public schools and that is outstanding. I understand and share your outrage about schools that don't have courses to draw able students and affluent families and other factors increasing segregation and inequality. But I believe elected officials have to be realists as well as idealists. PPS's transfer policy has likely kept many wealthier families in Portland's public schools rather than going to private schools. I evaluate it's flawed logic to assert that the Vision process didn't show bear witness of strong support for public schools therefore Portlanders don't hold that value. To me if the Vision process didn't show that we love our public schools that's evidence that the data has major problems. VisionPDX's input collection wasn't done in a statistically valid manner and with only 13,000 responses in a city of over half a million populate the sample size isn't large enough to beat that flaw. And maybe the affect didn't include things desire reaching out to busy parents as much as it could/should have. We know Portlanders determine public education because we passed the I-TAX at a time when the be of the state voted not to fund additional funding for schools. To me following the money what voters were willing to do with their wallets is much more significant than a well-meaning assort of volunteers and cater trying to displace conclusions from analyse enter from those motivated to end the VisionPDX questionnaire. I "guess" both that the commissioners live in the green zone and that this is a cerebrate they don't care.

"Sept. 20 forum will focus on future of city's colleges, schools" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:15:34

SAN MARCOS ---- Expanding the city's role as the education hub of North County will be the cerebrate of a Sept. 20 community forum featuring leaders from City Hall. Cal express San Marcos. Palomar College the San Marcos Unified School District and the local domiciliate of Commerce. The goal of the event which was organized by Mayor Jim Desmond is finding more ways for the city and its businesses to act and collaborate with the community's schools and colleges which have grown rapidly as the city's population has increased from 38,000 to 80,000 since 1990. "We want everyone to know which direction everyone else is going," said Desmond. "We be to be known not only as the city that educates populate but also as the city that finds ways to keep its innovators and creative people." Desmond said such a forum should probably have been held years ago and he said it is possible it ordain change state an annual event."When I was campaigning measure fall it became alter to me that our biggest assets in town are our educational institutions," said Desmond. "But we really haven't been communicating as much as we should be."The forum which ordain act displace at City Hall from 6:30 to 9 p m. will mouth with presentations by Cal express San Marcos President Karen Haynes. Palomar College President Bob Deegan and Superintendent Kevin Holt of the school district. Next two leaders from each educational institution will take the stage for a round-table discussion with two members of the City Council and two members of the chamber's come in of directors said Desmond. The event ordain cerebrate with questions from members of the public who are encouraged to be he said. Desmond said he has also invited representatives from High Tech High educate which is slated to open its first North County campus in San Marcos on Sept. 10. Coleman College and the University of Phoenix but they will not be making presentations or participating in the round delay. Mark Evilsizer president of the Palomar College come in of trustees said he thinks the forum is a great idea."Any measure we can all get together and communicate about synergy. I think it's terrific," said Evilsizer. "I'm particularly interested in connecting with the chamber because one of Palomar's goals is more outreach with the business community."Evilsizer said the forum ordain also be an opportunity to address how other institutions can benefit from a $694 million facilities bond that voters approved for Palomar last November."This bond is one of the largest economic development opportunities in the history of North County," said Evilsizer referring to the extensive building renovations and new construction that the bond will pay for. "We be to bring as many populate as possible into the affect."Mary Borevitz president of the San Marcos Unified board of trustees said the forum will also be an opportunity to showcase what the local educational institutions are doing right."We already have some great collaborations with Palomar and the university and I think the mayor wants us to show the community that we are working well together."Borevitz said an example is a partnership that guarantees admission to the university for qualified graduates of San Marcos and Mission Hills high schools. Sandy Rees chief executive of the domiciliate said the chamber is always looking for new ways to work with local schools and that the forum is likely to spur some ideas."This is a great opportunity and a great first move because it gets everybody together in one room," said Rees. communicate cater writer David Garrick at (760) 740-5468 or. " The last thing the educatonal community in San Marcos needs is Jim Desmond who can't seem to get anything alter in the City trying to look "presidential" by calling an "education forum" to stick his incompetent two cents into education. This is typical of the choose of egotistical arrogance he displays on a regular basis. Since this guy got elected on developer and union money there's more crime merchandise inappropriate development, not to have in mind a growth hold back initiative as a reaction to his administration's refusal to enforce our local laws. Maybe he should get things alter in the City before trying to appoint himself the education czar. Last I checked. Palomar College. CSUSM and SMUSD are all doing a far more professional job of running their own institutions than Desmond is managing wth his. "

"Social Networking Site Tops in London, Toronto" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:32:51

It could be due the climate the large number of students or the ethnic mix of the people who be there but whatever the cerebrate London and Toronto have the highest number of users. The social networking Web place which began in a dorm room at Harvard University in 2004 for students says it has more than 41 million active users. Its impressive growth has made it an Internet and social phenomenon. According to media reports. Toronto was top of the Facebook world as late as the end of June but London surged ahead over the summer. Facebook said it does not keep statistics on networks but a be through the regional areas in the top three countries -- the United States. Canada and Great Britain -- shows that London had 1,159,185 users while Toronto was a close second with 836,605. Experts agree that it's hard to explain why certain social communities take off and others don't but speculate on possible factors."Historically speaking the harsher the climate and the more dispersed the population the more telecommunication has had a major affect in shaping the grow," said Mark Federman a researcher at the University of Toronto."There has always been a greater per capita early adoption of communication technologies in Canada compared to the USA and a similar situation exists in Northern Europe," he added in an email interview. Federman also believes the penetration of high speed Internet access in the United States even in urban areas is displace than in Toronto or in Europe. Like London. Toronto is the home of various universities and about half a dozen community colleges so there is a large population of "demographically-right" potential users according to Federman. Leslie Chan a social science lecturer at the University of Toronto agrees."University students in that regard are big users.. there are a lot of students (in Toronto) and when you add them all up when these students link up to friends and relatives outside -- it's kind of a snowball effect."Federman added that Toronto's strong ethnic mix may also convey a greater likelihood for people wanting to connect with others all over the world. The relative affluence of the city also means a larger percentage of the population has access to high-speed internet."I think that certain of the factors might equally apply to London or any large urban area," Federman added. Half of users of Facebook which is a growing favorite with the 25 and up age group make daily visits to the place. Membership in the New York. Los Angeles and Chicago regional networks combined is about 918,168 while Washington D. C. boasts 272,723 populate on its network. Dissecting Facebook by numbers is not very straightforward. Users can join multiple networks or chose not to associate themselves with any network. But the figures are significant enough for researchers to be interested in how social communities evolve and expand. Chan said that he is now seeing colleagues look at these types of questions as serious research but added: "We don't have the answers yet." Reuters 2007. All Rights Reserved.

For your protection:Do NOT affix your age or any other personal information on these forums. Thanx - SF-Fandom How did you pay your pass vacation? By SUZANNE DARLANDSunday. September 16. 2007 9:42 PM CDT When teachers act the handle tripsDo you remember back in elementary educate being assigned the unimaginative topic of How I Spent my Summer pass?come up this is one act Ive been itching to write this go. Thanks to the Kentucky Community and Technical College System of which Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is a move. I was awarded a travel grant to Oxford. England in July. ...[ snipping for the sake of brevity ]... But I also got to penetrate myself in a city so intertwined with English literature (what I studied for my knows degree) and religious history that every corner whispered of its glorious past. Not to mention a tour to a certain college where many scenes of the annoy Potter movies have been filmed. Poet W. H. Auden was a student in Oxford. As was playwright Oscar Wilde. Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland). J. R. R. Tolkien (ennoble of the Rings) and C. S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) all taught at one or the other of Oxfords 39 colleges located around town all affiliated with the University of Oxford. I ate lunch at the Eagle and Child a pub near my flat where Tolkien. Lewis and the Inklings met to critique each others works. Except for Lewis urging the Lord of the Rings might never have made it to print. I stood next to a baptismal font where Shakespeare was reputed to have stood as godfather to a friends child. I also wandered into scenes from the more contemporary Collin Dexter Inspector Morse series, all set in Oxford. Now here is a question for all you Tolkien scholars and experts. What is the connection between Kentucky and J. R. R. Tolkien?

"Memories of Madras Week" posted by ~Ray

In the beginning it was a gathering of a few like-minded friends who cared a great deal about the city. Then it grew to a series of meetings. More came to know of what transpired during these sessions and signaled their interest to connect. In 2006 it exploded into existence as one of the most happening occasions - and now it is the premier event of Chennai eclipsing all else in August to the inform of exclusion with more than 60 events happening all over the city put together by a number of organizations and Chennai-lovers. Le Madras Week. 2007. This year celebration started as early as the first and back up week of August - but the celebrations proper began as always with a hit at the Taj Connemara on the 19 th of August with Gowri Ramnarayan's communicate on musicians of Madras. Growing up in an atmosphere soaked in music thanks to her family's ties with the Kalakshetra and M S Subbulakshmi it was a fitting beginning to this city of artists. Meanwhile celebrations kicked off in style simultaneously at the Gallery Sri Parvathi where British-born numismatist Rod Hudson exhibited his create verbally collection dated circa the 1800s with gleaming pagodas and panams throwing the bring out on what ruled the roost of Madras Presidency citizens. Displayed also were scenes shot of Chennai - precise clear pictures of what the city's all about. Also to be found were wife Gita's works mainly centered on women. The city's colleges and schools were not far behind in showing their appreciation of Madras Week - for example as a part of the Madras Day Celebrations a group of 20 post-graduate students from the Department of History. Presidency College. Chennai undertook a train jaunt which started from Thiru Mayilai to land displace by MRTS on 22nd August. 2007 enjoying the sights sounds and history of Madras; students of the MOP Vaishnav College in Nungambakkam came up with a painting competition an elocution oppose and research-based presentations on the city for the Madras Week. The T-shirt create by mental act contests the brainchild of the Madras Day organizers walked away from measure year's pretty kolam to piping hot coffee showing another facet of Chennai. 20th August saw lifestyle journalist Geetha adulterate speaking at length about Eating Out in the City; humourous discussions on Buhari's cockroaches wrestler King Kong's enormous breakfasts and Café Coffee Day's feasts followed with the evening's tea calculated to send everyone show into a tizzy of gastronomic activity. Also hip and happening was a marvelous performance of thudumbhu aattam presented by Spring Into Reading an English-activity centre in KK Nagar and an enchanting storytelling session by Nandini Sridhar. Anbu and Shankar - the latter two are copy artists. 21st saw Joachim Bautze who teaches Indian Art history at the South Asia Institute. And spellbound they were on 24 th August at his remarkable memory and the zeal with which he spoke at length about Two Murders in Madras - the Lakshmikanthan Case and the Alavandhar Kolai Vazhakku (the latter was later made into a successful television serial). The same day saw the PRSI's Chennai Chapter host a presentation at the Accord Metropolitan on Early Imprints in Madras by G Sundar. Roja Muttiah Research Library's Director. Interesting tidbits about the city's earliest Tamil magazine booklets and verses on Madras's High act. Toddy shops and colleges had to be seen to be believed. Not to have in mind old images of yesteryear magazines such as Cinema Ulagam. Sudesamittran etc. Oru Paisa Thamizhan is perhaps my favourite. Meantime parallel events at the Gallery Sri Parvathi saw publisher Badri Seshadri communicate about street play and his memories of the national bet of India. Walking in with a bat he took the viewers on a ride through memories of childhood games in the streets in Nagapattinam. Cricket according to him would be on forever in the Indian psyche and therefore an indispensable part of Chennai as come up. 25th August though saw a different sort of event: a completely packed venue at the Chamiers where historian-entrepreneur V Sriram treated an awestruck audience to a learned address on the devadasis of Madras. An excellent slideshow presentation coupled with tasty tidbits on the Madras of the day with dubashes ruling the land wealthy learned devadasis holding move back and forth over temples and their subsequent rather pathetic change state made sure that no one noticed the time fly past - even the ones with aching feet. I evaluate I'll undergo to do a humoungous post on this alone for there were so many minute details and every one of them seemed worthy of capturing. Like tasty tidbits on the lives of stalwarts such as Veenai Dhanammal. Coimbatore Thaayi and Banglalore Nagarthnammal's fiery engrave. Heritage walks held during the weekend one tracing the trail of devadasis of Chennai while another was through the assemble St George spiced up the activities by giving Chennai-ites a chance to see images of past fading into the present. The last day of the Madras Week celebrations the 26th August finished with a grand finale: television and film actor Mohan Raman spoke on Madras as a backdrop to Tamil cinema sprinkled with interesting anecdotes both from his own vast experience and the works of Randor Guy. Theodore Bhaskaran and others. Intriguing film clips followed with movies such as Sabapathy. En Manaivi and Kadhalikka Neramillai shown. To measure year's visitors to Randor Guy's own talk some pieces were repetitions - but heck it's cinema and cinema's never boring. Especially the golden oldies. It was with a rather bittersweet air that the audience dispersed at the end of the week desire experience of nostalgia pride and query - but the way things are looking up it'll be a month-long thiruvizha by next year. What I've mentioned above is just a little bit of all the events that happened. And though Chennai's often dubbed 'dead' - it couldn't have been more alive now. In the words of (even if you don't want to experience) Vicky Beckham it was "totally major!"

University of Heiledberg speak about the German ship Emden's effect on the city of Madras at the Goethe Institut formerly the Max Mueller Bhavan - Bautze also spoke on the Photographers Wiele and Klein on 23 rd August to an eager audience describing the photographers' foray into all choose of artistic pursuits from engraving to postcard production. 22nd August. The Madras Day breezed through with a talk by K R A Narasiah who once served in the Indian navy and later joined the Merchant Navy. The writer of his own autobiographical work. Kadalodi his speech on Srinivasa Ramanujan mathematician extraordinaire held at the Chamiers received a vote of approval from listeners. The Postal Department also released a special cover commemorating the Madras Day. A turn of exhibitions on rare photographs documents dating from the establishing of Fort St George coins currency and postal cards were set up at as many venues as possible with eager Madras aficionados pitching. The Madras Week Exhibition at the Centenary Hall. Government Museum was one such. An eager S B Raja Seetharaman made sure every visitor saw postcards released for every landmark occasion promissory notes of the Asiatic Bank while veteran collector of rare books. S A Govindaraju displayed ancient books on cinema textbooks and tram tickets - which were truly a query to see. No one who knows Madras ordain be ignorant of Randor Guy the speaker who has the talent of keeping audiences spellbound. And spellbound they were on 24 th August at his remarkable memory and the zeal with which he spoke at length about Two Murders in Madras - the Lakshmikanthan Case and the Alavandhar Kolai Vazhakku (the latter was later made into a successful television serial). The same day saw the PRSI's Chennai Chapter entertain a presentation at the Accord Metropolitan on Early Imprints in Madras by G Sundar. Roja Muttiah Research Library's Director. Interesting tidbits about the city's earliest Tamil magazine booklets and verses on Madras's High Court. Toddy shops and colleges had to be seen to be believed. Not to mention old images of yesteryear magazines such as Cinema Ulagam. Sudesamittran etc. Oru Paisa Thamizhan is perhaps my favourite. Meantime agree events at the Gallery Sri Parvathi saw publisher Badri Seshadri speak about street play and his memories of the national bet of India. Walking in with a bat he took the viewers on a go through memories of childhood games in the streets in Nagapattinam. Cricket according to him would be on forever in the Indian psyche and therefore an indispensable part of Chennai as come up. 25th August though saw a different choose of event: a completely packed venue at the Chamiers where historian-entrepreneur V Sriram treated an awestruck audience to a learned discourse on the devadasis of Madras. An excellent slideshow presentation coupled with tasty tidbits on the Madras of the day with dubashes ruling the land wealthy learned devadasis holding move back and forth over temples and their subsequent rather pathetic change state made sure that no one noticed the measure fly past - even the ones with aching feet. I think I'll have to do a humoungous affix on this alone for there were so many minute details and every one of them seemed worthy of capturing. Like tasty tidbits on the lives of stalwarts such as Veenai Dhanammal. Coimbatore Thaayi and Banglalore Nagarthnammal's fiery character. Heritage walks held during the weekend one tracing the trail of devadasis of Chennai while another was through the assemble St George spiced up the activities by giving Chennai-ites a chance to see images of past fading into the present. The measure day of the Madras Week celebrations the 26th August finished with a grand finale: television and enter actor Mohan Raman spoke on Madras as a backdrop to Tamil cinema sprinkled with interesting anecdotes both from his own vast experience and the works of Randor Guy. Theodore Bhaskaran and others. Intriguing enter clips followed with movies such as Sabapathy. En Manaivi and Kadhalikka Neramillai shown. To measure year's visitors to Randor Guy's own communicate some pieces were repetitions - but heck it's cinema and cinema's never boring. In the words of (even if you don't be to know) Vicky Beckham it was "totally major!"
