"OMFG!!! Facebook Change @ Claremont" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:45:46

We are now a part of the “Claremont Colleges” network instead of “Claremont.”  Pomona students must have complained enough that Mr. Zuckerberg made a concession. In case you were ever wondering the five colleges share the same network (besides making it easier for you to stalk people in your classes) our friends at the new have an answer: When Facebook first came to the Claremont Colleges in 2003 their computer servers were not exactly equipped to handle the insane amount of cross-college connections. Within hours of launching the site at the Claremont Colleges we brought their servers to a crashing halt for three days. Since the infamous Facebook crash we have since been referred to as one network -  Claremont. Did the Facebook hire a Pomona alum or something? wtf. I have enough trouble as is explaining to outsiders that I go to “claremont mckenna college” not “mckenna” or “claremont” or “someplace near la.” Now this ambiguity is on my facebook. The obvious solution is to create a facebook group in response to this drastic change! <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong> Recently I've had to watch a few Chilean movies for class that are far from.. well. "It's the Branding, Stupid" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:44:40

A behind-the-scenes look at the news of Claremont. CA. We focus on city hall city staff and the so-called "Claremont 400" or "Preserve Claremonters" or "Claremonsters" those goofy too-serious power types that run most of the town's service organizations charities and city commissions. Claremont is indeed a unique place and we'll try to bring a flavor of that absurd "uniqueness" to the outside world as well as spotlighting some of the finer things about our city and region. Boy were we wrong! We thought that the city of Claremont and its economic development projects were facing the same problems as the rest of the country but that the folks in City Hall have figured out that our economic woes are simply a matter of packaging: Businesses are slowly trickling out of Village West leaving behind empty storefronts and leasing signs on their doors. Red Line Leather in the Packing House is long gone. Boutique Peyton Gray and children’s clothing store Chloe & Hunter recently closed down. Celley’s on Indian Hill Boulevard will follow in the coming weeks said Storeowner Marcelle Sanam. The owners of Stone Cold Creamery and Maui Wowi are looking to sell while others are barely staying afloat. While much of the hardships of the $22.5 million redevelopment project are blamed on the dismal economy some shopkeepers have complained that the city has not done its part to promote the area as a vibrant shopping destination. In response city officials are in the process of discussing a “branding study” that they hope will re-define the city and draw in visitors and their sales tax dollars from around the region. City staff estimated the project would cost $50,000 to hire an outside consulting firm to come up with the brand and another $50,000 to promote and advertise the new brand.“We have a lot to offer,” said Assistant City Manager Tony Ramos speaking at a meeting of the Economic Development Committee on Tuesday. “We’re a very unique town. This is not a marketing plan for businesses it’s a branding of the community.” Phew! What a relief! We thought we were in real trouble there for a second. It's a good thing the city paid the Rose Institute of Claremont McKenna College to conduct. The Claremont City Council received the Rose Institute survey at their last meeting on October 28th. The staff's survey summary by the same Assistant City Manager Ramos quoted in the Courier yesterday painted a sunny picture of today's business scene that didn't seem to square with the Courier's article : Claremont business owners reported a relatively stable year in gross receipts. The survey asked owners whether their gross receipts increased or decreased over the past yea r An overwhelming 60 of businesses reported an increase or said their receipts were about the same as the year before. 33 of businesses indicated their receipts had decreased while 7 did not know whether their sales were up or down or refused to answer the question. There was very little difference between Village and non-Village business sales in gross receipts over the past year. Since Claremont's city staff directed the parameters of the survey it was also unsurprising to see the Rose Institute polling businesses about and increase in the city's Transient Occupancy Tax - the tax charged to guests at hotels and motels within the city limits: SUMMARYThe Rose Institute of Claremont McKenna College conducted a business climate survey. The purpose of the survey was to determine how Claremont's businesses are fairing in today's economy; if businesses have plans for expanding or relocating what role businesses believe the City should play in marketing businesses within the City; and if businesses would be willing to provide financial support for funding a citywide marketing campaign. The ad hoc survey committee has reviewed the survey results and is recommending that additional education be provided to the business community regarding transient occupancy taxes (TOT) and business improvement districts (BID). Why a TOT increase? Because the city wants to use the money raised to pay for its efforts at marketing (branding) the city. It would be unpopular to tax businesses for that so they decided to find people can't vote and charge them instead. The transient occupancy tax gets passed on to folks like the parents of students at the Claremont Colleges who presumably will get to help pay for marketing the city of Claremont without necessarily receiving commensurate benefits. Typical of Claremont city staff's thinking is the fact that although the Rose Institute survey showed that only 16% of the 283 businesses contacted indicated they would support an increase in the TOT staff did not conclude the tax increase was a bad idea. No instead Assistant City Manager Ramos wrote: In addition survey results suggest that many business owners may not understand what the transient occupancy tax is and how it mayor may not affect their business. A greater effort at clarifying the exact nature of the transient occupancy tax and how that tax would fund future marketing campaigns to the benefit of all the businesses in Claremont may be an option well worth further consideration by the City and the Chamber of Commerce. To translate into English: Business owners are to stupid to realize how much City Hall will benefit from this tax. We need to manipulate them a little more. They'll come around like they always do. The Rose Institute's survey carries this conclusion about the city's proposed TOT increase It is possible that business owners would be more likely to support such a measure if it was clear that the tax burden would fall on transient visitors who stay in local accommodations. It should also be noted that many local hotels cater to visiting parents or relatives of students at the Claremont Colleges and this clientele is unlikely to be strongly discouraged by city tax rates. In other words: Let's stick it to the college families. They can afford it. When are we ever going to figure this out? It's the credibility stupids.

"Claremont Colleges area visit - please advise" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:16:24

Chowhounder from Portland. Oregon on a 4 days college tour with daughter. (Claremont colleges. Occidental and Redlands) Any suggestions especially within the Claremont area or 20 minutes drive. Interested mostly in good hole-in-the-wall food finds of any write for eat lunch and dinner. Also one night of upscale-non-pretentious top food. Yes they do have other types of food. I disbelieve that the crab devise that I like to get there is Afghani. It is kind of a California fusion with a clump of Afghani dishes on the menu. The Afghani burger is also really good. It is somewhat upscale for dinner so they pull it off really well. When my preserve first took me there I thought Afghani? This ought to be interesting. But it was well done and Walter's has change state a favorite place to go! Really glad you mentioned Walter's! Walter's is a definite favorite of exploit. We usually go for eat because of our budget but dinner is good too. They also have a great eat on Sunday. My preserve (who went to college in Claremont so he knows the spots) took me there on one of our first dates. Very nice atmosphere if you sit outside. I always get the bowlanies appetizer and I also buy a store of the create from raw material chutney to act domiciliate when I go. Hi. I'm a student at the Claremont Colleges and here are some of my favorites. THE VILLAGEThis is the assemble of shops and restaurants immediately west of Pomona College. It's an area of about six blocks bounded by Indian forge on the west. Harvard Avenue on the east and runs from First street to Fourth Street. Walk and investigate this area and you'll find enough restaurants to act you entertained for a bring together of days. My suggestions in order of preference: - La Piccoletta. Pure and simple Italian. The menu each night consists of an appetizer (~$10) one pasta with a choice of four sauces (~$14 for a half portion. ~$15 for a full administer) and a selection of desserts flown in daily from Milan (~$7). Small selection high quality. Each entree comes with a complimentary beverage including wine a small color salad and bread. The decor is rustic restaurant is small and romantic with only about 6-8 tables. Problem 1 is that the location is so tucked away that few people experience about but if you're up for a hunt the move is worth it! Here's what you do: Find Heroes Restaurant at 131 Yale Ave on Yale and back up. There's a walkway between Heroes and Powell's Hardware on the other align (you'll see a mural by the walkway). Go drink the path to find yourself in a parking lot-the restaurant's on the southwest command of the parking lot (to your front toward the left) There's no sign but there's a mural on the building it's painted to look desire villa or something. Problem 2 is that it is closed on weekends for private parties. -Viva Madrid: Spanish tapas. Website linked below with online menu and directions. It's one big dimly lit dwell cluttered with Spanish artifacts the kind of place where all the silverware is individual and everyone gets a different napkin holder. Try the sangria stick to the tapas. I recommend the gambas ajillos a basket of cover to immerse up all the sauces cease with steamed strawberries create the specials menu queso con quince (manchego cease with quince paste-delicious-don't see it on the online menu ask about it perhaps) the gazpacho (it comes with a real garlic-lover's garlic bread with real minced garlic on top none of this garlic butter cram) toasted bread with cabrales cease and red booze marinated pears.-Kinya: newly opened Japanese restaurant on the corner of Indian Hill and Bonita. Good sushi with some great sushi dinner/lunch deals. -Saca's: Mediterranean food. Pretty hole-in-the-wall pretty cheap pretty good shawerma falafel hummus and tabouleh. 248 W. 2nd st. For breakfast check out Full of Life Bakery on 333 Bonita Ave.. Some change surface Bakery on 119 Yale Ave and 42nd Bagel Street Cafe on 225 Yale Ave. ELSEWHERE within a 5-10 minute drive. Should you conclude desire driving a bit here are some places I think are worth the move and that are a bit more unique. - German Deli on 983 W. Foothill Blvd at Mulberry st. Drive East on Foothill pass Mountain Ave turn left at Mulberry. Very homey wonderful service (the owner. Kristine is like the aunt who always wants to feed you). A little deli selling German treats and goods with a seating area of 4-6 tables with German postcards and family pictures tucked between the tablecloth and glass. They do an awesome Ruben sandwich the bratwurst meal with two sides is a consistent favorite the german potato salad is commendable (just a hint of spiciness) although the other sides (spaetzle sauerkraut red steal) are wonderful as well. I've tried much of their devise menu and they're all good. -Pho Ha at 695 Indian forge Blvd. Go south on Indian Hill pass Kingsley move right into the strip mall before Holt st. Hole-in-the-wall cheap Vietnamese place. Don't miss their egg rolls which they cover in lettuce leaves (not to be confused with spring rolls). Noodle soup with beef is popular or try a vermicelli for a fresh light noodle dish with lots of veggies. - Patty's Mexican Food. 1332 N. Towne Ave. Go west on Foothill. Towne should be the second study street after Indian Hill it's on the northest corner of Towne and Foothill. I've never been but it's popular with students a friend says it's a good hole-in-the-wall write displace. - Inka Trails for Peruvian food at 1077 Foothill Blvd. It'll be on your right immediately before Towne Ave if you go west on Foothill. Nicer decor hint dining experience. Hope that helps undergo a great visit! I agree w/ elmomonster great overview of Claremont!! We've enjoyed Viva Madrid many times but don't get the oxtail unless you want to be surprised by the comprehend of cloves and other REALLY strong spices in this cater which I feel is a bit of an acquired taste. A bit further west on Alosta/Hwy 66 in Glendora there's a student favourite for fresh strawberry donuts called Donut Man. Strawberries are in season hence a great time to get them. This item is seasonal and after the strawberry season's over in summer they also alter a wicked fresh break donut. For your higher-end dining choice there are two or three places in that part of the world that I advance. First is probably Brasserie Astuce (see link below). Surprisingly well-executed classic French cuisine. If this place were in West L. A. it would cost twice as much. It won't knock your socks off but it is reliable and fairly authentic and a fairly good deal. The coq au vin cassoulet and choucroute garnie are real winners here. There is an adjacent wine obtain that has a good selection of French wines. Some are on the restaurant's booze list but the ones that aren't can be purchased (priced very reasonably) and consumed at the restaurant for a corkage of $10.01. Lots of wines in the shop that are in the 15-20 range so you can have a very decent bottle of wine with dinner for $30 or less. A good selection of wines by the furnish is available too (since it sounds like you'll be the only one of age). It's on Foothill Blvd./despatch 66 just west of Towne in Pomona (practically on border w/Claremont less than 10 minutes from the colleges). In the town of La Verne (next town west of Pomona less than 15 minutes from the colleges) is a reliable Italian called Cafe Allegro. Small place. Good food. In the heart of old La Verne. If you wanted to venture a bit farther west to Glendora less than 20 minutes from the colleges you'll sight Chelsea (Route 66 at Lone.

Until I went out and got the send today. I had a enumerate of nine schools I wanted to bear on to: Boston College. Boston University. Columbia University. Marist College. NYU. UC Berkeley. UC San Diego. UConn and the University of Miami. To clarify here. I initially picked Marist College as a safety because of its undergraduate social work program (only I don't think I want to be a social worker anymore) the Presidential Scholarship that gives $12,000 yearly to me and anyone else with a GPA of 4.0 or better and an SAT advance above 2050 and the fact that I entangle I needed another safety educate that didn't keep me stuck in Connecticut. Now here's the interesting move. Twice now. Scripps College has contacted me specifically asking me to bear on for two of their scholarships. One is good for half-tuition for four years and is awarded to about 30 freshmen; the other is good for four years' beat tuition room come in airfare home three times a year and one summer research stipend and is given to one woman each year. Technically speaking. Scripps is a women's college but since it's part of a five-college schedule with Claremont-McKenna. Harvey Mudd. Pitzer and Pomona Colleges. I'm not worried about the all-girl thing or the small size- combined. I think the Claremont Colleges undergo a higher enrollment than Marist or Columbia. I think I'm going to study in either political science or sociology although recently I've also been thinking about women's studies. At Marist there are only minors in sociology and women's studies- my major would have to be political science. I can study in political science and/or women's studies at Scripps and if I decide I be to major in sociology. I can do so through Pitzer or Pomona. Plus there's the fact that I'd much rather live in Southern California (Claremont is about half an hour outside of Los Angeles) than Poughkeepsie. NY. Nothing against Poughkeepsie it's just that I'm trying to get myself out of suburbia here. Here's the thing though- unless someone convinces Marist College's admissions department that I'm a convicted axe murderer. I'm getting in and I'm getting the yearly $12,000. My stats stack up pretty come up against the average Scripps student so I'm not overly worried but a rejection sight from them would not be entirely shocking. Even if I get in though there's no pledge that I'll get any money whatsoever. be isn't my top concern but my mom already has some debt and does okay but certainly doesn't have a few grand to spare every year. She's told me that "she'll find a way to pay for it no matter what" and I love her for it but out of familial obligation. I'm not going anywhere that isn't going to back up her pay for it. One last note: Mom already thinks I'm applying to too many schools. She has suggested that I decrease drink my list and given that application fees are generally in the $50-75 be apiece. I understand that completely. I think she's accepted the fact that I'm applying to nine schools but announcing that I'm going for ten might not go over so well college application dramaOpen to: All results viewable to: All I only applied to two schools. This is because I'm the kind of person who always feels the need to alter somewhat impulsive immediate decisions. So I decided to go here in October of my senior year. The only cerebrate I applied to the other school was because my dad made me; I hate that school with a passion and had absolutely no intention of going there.

"Claremont's $1000000 Mistake" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-18 12:26:05

A behind-the-scenes be at the zany goings on in Claremont. CA. We cerebrate on city hall city staff and the so-called "Claremont 400" or "Preserve Claremonters" or "Claremonsters" those goofy too-serious cater types that run most of the town's function organizations charities and city commissions. Claremont is indeed a unique place and we'll try to carry a flavor of that absurd "uniqueness" to the outside world as well as spotlighting some of the finer things about our city and region. As first made public in a late-Friday that attempted to glide the end of the news cycle and as the City had to scurry late measure week to sight $1,000,000 to put into escrow in request to close on the 183-acre Johnson's feed property. The story in Bigham's bind is that the money came from the City general finance reserves. The cerebrate was that the City and property owners had written and agreed to deed language that lowered the merchandise value of the property below what it had been. Basically the owners were selling a conjoin of property that could not be developed according to the language. Therefore the State withdrew its give offer of $1,000,000 since the land was already protected by the deed. This appallingly expensive fiasco is due to monumental incompetence on the part of City cater and the City Council. One would think that after the months-long set-piece battle over a previous appraisal of the property with the --the State agency with millions to hand out--the City would be sensitive to factors that reduce the determine of the property such as find and deed restrictions. But no. It is a little murky how the deed language came about. The most believable scenario is that Claremont 2007 Honored Citizen Suzanne Thompson (head of the ) pushed for this language and got part-owner to put the language in the deed. But where is the adult supervision? Where is the cracker-jack and cater? Shouldn't staff had known that such language would put the $1,000,000 express give at assay? Was this part of the discussion councilmembers Linda Elderkin and Ellen Taylor had with owner Deborah Robinson last June?--. Fast-forward to September. The $9.75 million in bonds were sold measure month. With the quarter-million from the CWC and a half-million from Los Angeles County plus a bit from the Claremont Colleges also in escrow the City was relying on the $1,000,000 State grant to complete the $11.5 million funding. Bad news from Sacramento: the arrive you are purchasing has a deed restriction that makes it less valuable. The former appraisal is no longer any good. The express can't act in a deal that pays above merchandise for property. We comprehend from our sources up north that there was a lot of visiting of legislative and agency offices by City Staff measure week in Sacramento when they were all up there for the unify of Cities Expo but they couldn't get anyone interested in helping. The Wildlife Conservation come in was alter; no one wanted to die on that forge. Now the interesting part. You'd evaluate that this whole air would be have in mind at September 11th's City Council meeting. If you thought that you'd be do by. Nary a evince. The City Manager. "Mr. Transparency" Jeff Parker pointedly said he had nothing to inform. Come on escrow is about to close in two or three days we are a million dollars short and there is no public discussion of it?Now we read in the City touch release that the City used $1 million from the command fund to end the acquire. What's that all about??? What is the legal basis for going into the general fund to the tune of $1,000,000???? Doesn't that demand some public discussion and maybe a vote of the governing be (City Council)????? Can Matt Hawkesworth or Jeff Parker just write a check for $1,000,000 with no challenge by Council??????We don't see any emergency here. We don't see any proper closed session air; in any event the one closed session since this air broke did NOT have this on the agenda. We don't see any cerebrate to compete hide-the-ball with this issue. We do know that the Johnson's Pasture funding discussion for two years did NOT include command finance monies and now in the last two weeks in apparently unilateral and secret decisions by--whom?--Peter Yao. Jeff Parker. Matt Hawkesworth. Linda Elderkin. Ellen Taylor. The general finance is a million bucks lighter. What's going on here? Has incompetence morphed into illegality?

Posted on 2007-09-11 03:40:25

Okay so today has been insane in the membrane! Every HOT guy in the world has come into City Hall today.... I mean every HOT guy imaginable. My favorite thus far was this guy who came in with this huge hike and an evince.. yay for men with accents:) So anyways he started talking (and i melted. I convey listened) and he told me that he was a transfer student from Australia to the Claremont colleges and he has been waiting for his roomate to come pick him up for over an hour.. he wanted to see if he could use our telecommunicate to label him so of coarse I said yes!!! So there I am listening to him speak my ovaries jumped with every accented word.. seriously this guy was HOT. SO he gets off the phone and starts asking me where a certain street is in my head I start talking in a similar evince (its a problem I have whenever I talk to populate with accents. I automatically be to talk approve to them with an evince as come up it just comes out.) so being aware of my train of thought and my past habits or accent speaking I try really hard not to. All of a sudden.... BAM!!! Out came the words: "Bonita is just alter over there conjoin." What the deuce???!!! First off I never say mate secondly since when did I create a horribly bad Australian accent he laughed and asked what part of Australia was I from.. and all I could communicate out was..."no I am from here." I am officially retarded hands drink lame-o! Another day in the life of me:)
