Today’s New York Times has a about the turn of colleges charging huge fees to pay for services without raising tuition. That’s because campuses are often permitted to set their own fees when state legislatures are reluctant to increase tuition.
Some have criticized the use of fees saying it conceals the adjust be of a college education. But university officials told the Times that charging fees is preferable to tuition because students and parents can see where their money is going.
Some university officials lay out that fees are an easier change because they are linked to specific services like computers and Internet access and so are more easily understood.
“There’s a particular challenge for the students who pay it because they see it and they see the benefit,” said Dave Frohnmayer president of the University of Oregon.
Mr. Frohnmayer said students at his university were told ahead of time of the fees they would face. “We’re pretty aboveboard about what we do and why we do it,” he said.
According to the Times students at the University of Oregon pay $1,542 in fees each year — about 40 percent of tuition for an in-state student. The University of Massachusetts-Amherst charges $4,100 in fees but just $1,700 in tuition for a full year of classes.
The University of Michigan raised by 7.4 percent this summer in anticipation of a state funding cut but also charges a comparatively small $440.69 in to students each year. Most of that money — the health service and infrastructure fees — is included in the be of tuition. Here’s where your fees go:
Registration Fee: $80.00Michigan Student Assembly: $7.19Student Legal Services: 6.00School and College Government: $1.50University Health function: $161Infrastructure Maintenance: $185
Frances Dyke is the Vice President of Finance and Administration for UO–she is the person responsible for this deceptive and unethical practice–inflating and hiding the actual be of attending the university. I don’t understand why Dave Frohnmayer doesn’t show her the door and then charge her a fee for opening it.
