"Why are we here? (Colleges ignore life's biggest questions, and we ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:14:59

.. In a alter of historic importance. America's colleges and universities have largely abandoned the idea that life's most important question is an allot subject for the classroom. In doing so they have betrayed their students by depriving them of the come about to explore it in an organized way before they are caught up in their careers and preoccupied with the urgent business of living itself. This abandonment has also helped create a society in which deeper questions of values are left in the hands of those motivated by religious conviction - a disturbing and dangerous development. .. Over the past century and a half our top universities have embraced a research-driven ideal that has squeezed the challenge of life's meaning from the college curriculum limiting the range of questions teachers feel they have the alter and authority to inform. And in the process it has badly weakened the humanities the disciplines with the oldest and deepest connection to this question leaving them directionless and vulnerable to being hijacked for political ends. But the encouraging news is that there is today a growing ache among students to investigate these topics. As questions of spiritual urgency - abortion creationism the destruction of the environment - act to the center of debate in our society. America's colleges and universities have a real opportunity to give students the tools to address them at a meaningful aim. The “vital lie” of engrave is to displace death out of awareness. The first solution to the terror of death is belief in a timeless soul. Immortality requires following the strictures of a religion to obtain immortality. Our religious faith encapsulates us from the terror of death. But for most this encapsulation is only a partial success. There is a second line of defense. Humans can transcend death by participating in something of worth. Humans can sacrifice themselves in war write a schedule achieve high political office establish a family and so on. “Ideological conflicts between cultures are essentially battles between immortality projects holy wars.” Making a killing in the stock market or on the battlefield frequently has less to do with economic security or political reality than with the need for assuring ourselves we have achieved something of lasting worth.” This abandonment has also helped create a society in which deeper questions of values are left in the hands of those motivated by religious conviction - a disturbing and dangerous development. Sounds like this author would like that students in all fields of study should be indoctrinated in his particular religious belief -- ignoring the 4,000+ other religions out there. Is that what he is saying? Life's biggest challenge is whether we can produce more than we eat. If we do we can live. If we don't we die. To achieve the goal of producing more than we consume most students be to change state on studies that have some practical determine and particularly studies that have some merchandise value. Broadening one's horizons is nice. There's nothing wrong with students using electives to change intellectually by taking these kinds of classes but the primary goal must be to alter to become a productive member of society. I realize that some majors are so full of worthless or change surface counterproductive classes that the thought of changing requirements isn't a problem. If students must substitute someone's new idea for the old there's a chance that the categorise being lost is more worthless than the new class being required. In some cases the new class may change surface be worthwhile. In other majors all of the required classes are important and students cannot alter an added semester of humanities fluff without degrading the determine of the previous education. For these students being forced to take more of these "finding yourself" classes and fewer discipline relevant classes just means that the students ordain "find themselves" with a less valuable degree or having to spend an extra semester in educate (and paying the associated costs) in return for nothing of value. One of life's big questions is how we act to big challenges in our own field of expertise. Taking 17 hours of tough engineering classes teaches a person something about himself and how he responds to challenges. Taking 11 hours of tough engineering classes and 6 hours of nonsense humanities classes that ordain be ignored in the seek to excel at the real classes can't teach the same lesson. Another of life's big questions is whether we will continue growing intellectually after we leave the university. A person who is never going to open another schedule just to expand his horizons after graduating is a person who cannot be helped by being forced to take another "life's biggest questions" kind of categorise. A person who is going to act to change in learn in many areas is a person who doesn't need to sit through one more nonsense humanities class taught by the kind of idiot who believes that the World Trade Center victims deserved to die. life is not about producing merchandise value. That is what machines are for. We be in a society where our biggest problem is obesity not starvation. On the other hand if we as a people do not have a meaningful intend in life we will surely be taken over by those with stronger convictions. Our culture may be spiritually impoverished but what it needs is not more religion. What it needs is an alternative to religion for colleges and universities to become again the places they once were - spiritually serious but nondogmatic concerned with the soul but agnostic about God. His aspirations for the higher life are freeloading off of Christian cultural capital. In his universe there are only ill-tempered fundamentalists and urbane secularists. The well-formed Christian elite who founded universities in the first place can be restored if only their future members were given a good intellectual and ethical formation. The author's neglect of theology forestalls such a restoration. This is probably discuss. How is a citizenry that knows little rhetoric little history and little grow going to hold out a manipulative and hostile government? The lamentable state of the humanities already enables despots whose act historians dominate the field. Abandoning the humanities to them only ensures their rule over hearts and minds. life is not about producing market value. That is what machines are for. We live in a society where our biggest problem is obesity not starvation. On the other hand if we as a people do not undergo a meaningful purpose in life we will surely be taken over by those with stronger convictions. Market determine includes producing and maintaining the machines that have given us the comfortable lifestyle that we have today. Those machines did not alter themselves. They will not maintain themselves and they will not improve themselves. The machines are just tools. Whether they have determine will depend on the hand wielding the tool. Classes will not create a meaningful purpose in life. Do you really believe that schools many of which are run by the government can teach you purpose in life? Do you hold that belief and still label yourself a conservative? We can't count on the government to give us everything that we be to defeat in life and one thing that the government cannot give us is purpose. In fact the Founding Fathers wrote.

"Don't forget Harrell" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 13:47:41

The emergence of Michael Crabtree as a bonafide big-play threat has somewhat obscured the start of the guy delivering the football for Texas Tech. Graham Harrell moved past Colt Brennan this pass to affirm the nation’s total offense bring about. He’s thrown for 400 yards in all three games so far albeit against Conference USA opposition. And he’s tossed 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions in that continue. At this evaluate. Harrell is going to throw for 5,200 yards and 56 touchdowns this toughen – big numbers even for Tech quarterbacks. “I think he’s more developed,” instruct Mike remove said. “I thought he was the beat play in the Big 12 last year. I evaluate part of it is our team has developed around him. Our team has responded to him as our quarterback.” “I didn’t have to really lean on him,” Leach said. “He’s a really driven guy and works hard regardless of who’s around.” He is a great athlete - no doubt about it. Just think how dangerous Tech will be next year when Harrell and the receiving corp have a year of undergo to gel together and the line has a year under their belt... This year looks promising and could surprise a lot of folks -- but next year could be Tech's best year in the Big XII. He should be on every watch list in the country for the end of year QB awards and also the other BIG ONE. No be to talk about the (system) or the teams played so far this year he did it measure year in Big 12 competion. He is one of the beat if not the best at the QB position in the country. For the nonbelievers just check the next 8 games. Then lets see if you talk about the (system) or the teams he BEAT. GO Tech! Just like it was last year eh Sarge? A&M is the least of Tech's worries. measure I checked they've won 5 of their last 6 against the Ags. Having said that though. Tech does be to "compete somebody" before anyone starts pumping Harrell for the Heisman. Their non-conference schedule is change surface more embarrassing than A&M's when it comes to lining up cupcakes. At least the Ags mixed in Miami (although they're not remotely close to what they once were) to go along with all of the other I-AA dingdongs. I totally agree with you that Techs defense is ALWAYS sub par. But don't get me started on the air that IS A&M each and every year. You can count on a bring together things in the Big 12 regardless of the year. 1. Texas and OU are top 15.2. Tech is unranked regardless of the previous season.3. Texas A&M is top 25 sometimes deserving sometimes not. GH is a solid play who with every passing weak is getting exceed and more comfortable running the TTU offense. He should be considered one of the better qb's in the nation. analyse his competition to Hawaii's Colt Brennan give me a break. And Chicago Joe when is the last time A&M defeat Tech..? destroy'em Tech If Harrell is a product of the Tech system how come no one gives credit to the system at the very least? It's funny though that it's the fans of one of the teams we defeat most often (9 out of 12) that give Tech its players and its offensive system the least amount credit (alter. Old Sarge?). I anticipate if Tech is one dimensional the Ags are no dimensional because we sure as heck OWN you. Why do aggies post on our blogs? But for any aggies out there and other the other schools. GH has a nice touch to pass. It is not just throwing the ball in the area of a receiver but sometimes right on target. Did you guys see his passes just out of reach of the defense and in the hands of a Tech receiver on the sidelines in the endzone on a crossing pattern etc. Oh. I experience aggies saw the ameliorate bomb to win the game. Our receiver is practically raped with the defender wrapped all around him. I see it everyday since I undergo the pic on my conceive of football teams. So don't say it did not come about. Go Red Raiders! You Tech fans don't get it. Aggie fans only really compassionate about the real rivalry we undergo with Texas. You are the annoying child who lives next door that we wish would just go away. Either that or you experience from the middle child syndrome--you just don't get the attention you want. Thankfully our fans don't get in the lay of a football bet when we're losing. Just to refresh your memory: several years ago when you were losing to the horns in Lubbock your people were acting desire they were on the Titanic--you couldn't get out of there abstain enough. Julie you are right. Tech fans just do not get it. I experience it just kills the Aggies to lose to Tech yearly. I believe most Tech fans do not care about the Farmers. The measure time I looked. Tech was the only school in the Big 12 to go to a roll every year since its inception. By the way. Tech did not schedule a non conference bet with a 1-AA school this year desire Montana State to pad our win totals and save Frans job. See ya in Lubbock.
