"Colleges That Change Lives: How To Choose A College That?s Right ..." posted by ~Ray

SIZE MATTERSYour college does not have to be bigger than your high school. Most good liberal arts colleges undergo a population of fewer than 4,000 for a reason: college is a measure to explore and many students find a smaller community more conducive to internal exploration. What really matters however is not the be of populate but the people themselves and the kind of community in which you ordain hit the books. Many large universities undergo established smaller “honors colleges” for these reasons. A NAME-BRAND COLLEGE ordain NOT GUARANTEE SUCCESSThink about the people in your life who are happy and successful. Find out whether they went to college and if so where they attended. Often you’ll find that success in life has less to do with one’s choice of a college than with personal qualities and traits and the experience and the opportunities one has in college. Employers and graduate schools are looking for outstanding skills and experience not college pedigree. As you search for colleges ask about student outcomes and you ordain sight many colleges you may have never heard of that beat the Ivies and label Brands! tour the National analyse of Student Engagement (NSSE) website () for more information and as an alternative to rankings and lists. YOU DON’T be TO PICK A study YETVery few high educate students have enough information or undergo to decide a major. Most students need the variety and depth of college coursework to determine their interests and aptitudes. In fact most college students change their minds two or three times before they settle on a major and still graduate in four years! Being undecided is a good thing; it will leave you open to more academic experiences. DON’T BE SCARED BY THE STORIESIf you pay attention to the headlines when it comes to college admissions you might believe that no one is getting in anywhere! The truth is the majority of the colleges and universities in this country admit more students than they evaluate. If you are worried about your come about for admission and are willing to investigate beyond the very narrow band of highly selective colleges you will sight many options that could be a great fit for you. analyse your academic compose to those of recently admitted and enrolled students at any college you’re considering. (Most colleges give this information on their website but communicate the educate if you can’t find it.) Ask your high school counselor for additional advice and guidance as it applies to your preserve and educate. YOU CAN AFFORD TO GO TO COLLEGEIf you anticipate that you cannot drop college based on the “sticker determine,” you will desire out. It may be difficult for you to talk about money but if you investigate all the options and ask for help and advice you will find affordable choices. Online resources as come up as financial aid workshops sponsored by high schools in your community are widely available to get you started. College and university financial aid websites offer useful information and links as come up. Investigate early and ask for help. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS FITChoosing a college because your friends are going there or because of where it ranks on a enumerate does not act into account who you are and who you ordain become. College is a match to be made not a prize to be won. Finding a good fit requires measure and introspection. Visiting a college’s website learning about campus events and guest speakers and getting in touch with current students and faculty are good ways to supplement a campus tour—or to decide if you even be to spend the time and money on a tour. Check college websites to identify the admission command assigned to your region of the country and telecommunicate him or her. Ask if you can get in touch with students from your area or students with interests similar to yours. When you visit take the time to sit in on classes eat in the dining hall and hang around in the student center or other high-traffic areas. create by mental act yourself as part of the community. Talk to students and ask if they would make the same college choice if they had to do it again.

So I went to this "Colleges that change lives" thing today. I wanted to analyse out two colleges-Goucher and Hampshire. Both are awesome but Goucher is seriously pretty sweet. Out of all the..4. colleges I've actually been really interested in it has the greatest combination of pluses: +Liberal Arts College+In Baltimore so literally right near some relatives of mine.+If I get the beat IB diploma. I get bumped up to Sophomore+It's on the tuition transfer enumerate (long story)+It has an amazing travel abroad program+It's pretty awesome. So yeah. So far that one is at the top of the list. But inform it's only August of Junior year. So things can change. Anyway. You probably won't be bumped up to sophomore status only because you take too many SL classes. It's all about HL with those college mofos. And that is why Metro IB sucks big ones. Noah... Other than that. Goucher sounds fab. Haha. I act wanting to say Gouger. desire.. you guys sit around all day poking each other in the eyes. I was under the impression that a great deal of classes are HL:Bio. HOA. Lit. Latin (although that one's sorta iffy). Art. TOK. Oh and the goucher website doesn't enumerate a requirement for classes just the diploma. But I've sent them an email to see if they'll tell me more. Hey how's your college 'experience' so far? Haven't had it yet! I don't leave for another 2 weeks. It really sucks. But yeah. I don't know about Latin but all other foreign language classes are SL. Also. Bio doesn't even count because everyone gets 2s and 3s and Art is also SL he just spreads it out over a 2 year period. TOK sucks. copulate that class. Seriously take it and copulate it. It's a compel that TOK the class that is suppose to be the most fun and interesting turns out to just be a "Mrs. Lathrop's Big List of Grievances". Anyway. I'm just change taste because I did get my diploma and I only got ummm 2 classes worth of ascribe. But that's OSU. They are really weird about credits and just about everything else... How is drama? Has it started yet? Awww. Wow. OSU starts pretty late. Hey according to the website the only thing that matters is if you get the diploma. Individual test scores be to count only if you've just got a certificate. But. I emailed the admissions people there so when they express me whatsup with all that. I'll be sure to affix. Yeah. TOK sucks. She clearly has no idea what she is doing. And the people in full IB in my grade? Kinda boring to be honest. They don't say anything. And Mrs. Lathrop has changed her dad's rank/position/grow of the military twice so far. I can see why you're bitter that pretty much sucks. My sympathies. Drama has started. It's going to be interesting. We've got a few new populate the new freshmen be alright but we've still got a huuuuggeee lack of gender balance.

Striving for accuracy in history economics geography education and a little science It’s been an interesting measure few days. Saturday we drove to Austin to surprise a session with a group called as younger son James is looking hard to find a good college fit for next go. Sunday. Troop 355 honored its fifth Eagle this year (one of the five being James) and then we attended the ordination of a friend from our congregation a recent graduate from. School started yesterday across Texas. This afternoon older son Kenny popped in for a quick laundry run and to pick up some items he needs for the go away of his third year at UT-Dallas. So much change all the measure.   Teachers have more to send off to college more often.  Either that’s what ages us or it’s what keeps us young. This entry was posted onWednesday. I may be a bit biased at the moment but as far as the CTCL assort you might be to undergo a closer look at. I comprehend they have a very sharp new PhD student and great TA in their biology department. How about their physics department and music performance programs? You can’t go do by with the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. Beloit College graduates more PhDs per capita than all but 5 or 6 others (and is strictly undergrad). Not that I’m biassed or anything. Antioch is another but that pulled the plug on itself recently a compel. I really don’t know too much about Physics or Music Performance or even whether or not they have either one. I’m comfort trying to remember everybody’s names in my own department! If Biology’s any indication though. Clark is pretty good at hiring brilliant populate (they’ve got David Hibbett and Tom Leonard after all). The school’s small size makes communication a good deal easier too. "Alfred Gingold: Scenes From an Empty Nest" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 13:49:39

A few weeks ago my wife and I drove our son to college. All went smoothly after the initial disagreement about how to mount the new rooftop cargo thing so it would neither fly off within a few miles nor cause the car to hydroplane out of hold back on the Interstate. Our boy - young man - resolved the contrast by withdrawing to chill at the dining-room table hoodie pulled snug over his entire continue except for a little breathing hole. Since it was about 87 degrees at the time. "chill" may not be the right evince but we soon hit the road an American family off to college in a station wagon with cram on the cover. The evening open us in the hotel's restaurant with its award-winning salad bar and my wife and I can attest excellent martinis. Preposterously early the next morning we drove to the campus found the dorm unpacked the car with the help of several sweet and sleepy young people made our goodbyes and left. It was all too quick and strange for tears and in the ensuing days the two of us undergo held wistfulness at bay by noticing good things we'd never anticipated such as these: 1. Road Music - We can listen to whatever we want to in the car as loud as we want to. Perhaps we could have done as much during the drear college visits of the past eighteen months since our son was continuously plugged into his iPod and apparently asleep during those trips. When asked however he insisted he was not asleep only trying to sleep. Now it's hootenanny time. On the way home we played "Blue," Joni Mitchell's finest hour to which we both know every single word. One of us has a tuneful voice; the other not so much. We harmonized (choose of) with raucous abandon all the way through "met a redneck on a Grecian isle who did the goat move very well" to "Richard got married to a figure skater." 2. Different Dining - Meals with our growing boy usually involved a hunk of protein a starch and a vegetable: healthy food and masses of it. At the same time we wanted our child to value the difference between Big Macs and real hamburgers pablum and polenta. And he does. But while his tastes are still developing ours arrived desire ago. Neither of us is eager to change any more (except spiritually of course) so after a giddy flirtation with the potato-chip-and-wine diet we're approve to our kind of healthy eating: These days most of our meals consider anchovies. 4. domiciliate Improvement: -- Eight fewer pairs of enormous sneakers in the living room really opens the lay up. Also tying into manageable bundles the dog-eared Aaaaah. Sometimes we just be up late clicking aimlessly through the channels. Sure we're wasting our measure but we're not setting a bad example. 6. Dog Duty: We can abandon the stressful pretense that our son ordain go the dog on anything like a regular basis. This is a relief. On the other transfer the poor dog now has no-one handy to move on beat extravagantly or follow dementedly around the accommodate. When we try to roughhouse with him he looks embarrassed for us. 7. The Laundry Thing: There is so much less laundry to do with just the two of us in residence that we query if our son was changing his clothes three times a day - which is odd because he rarely looked that way. We'll have to address when we visit on Parents' Weekend. 8. Not Quite Gone: Friends who've been through this advised us not to go into our son's dwell for a couple of days after he'd left. Of cover we went right in and surprisingly found being there a great comfort. It looks as if he'd never left. We've made the odd stab at straightening up but really we're just poking around to remind ourselves of him. The dwell is layered desire the cities of Troy with once-essential items - cordless headphones piggy bank handheld electric fan color usb flash drive cover comparing Buddhism to Taoism (10th grade) and a zillion gaudy shirts from basketball tournaments. He might not be or be any of them but he would surely notice if we removed any so we won't. All of which proves that even though he hauled several large crates of belongings away with him to college our son still lives with us. Which means the dwell isn't empty yet only resting.

"Parents: Take the SAT Challenge!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 15:20:11

By Jacqueline Byrne I keep a box of tissues on the table where I tutor because,as an SAT instruct and college application consultant. I comprehend tohigh educate juniors and seniors who are so overwhelmedby college pressure that they begin to cry. Not just girls. Notjust Ivy League aspirants. High school students are always convinced their parentsdont understand them. This time the students are alter. Parents dont understand because the college admissionprocess is so much more competitive than it was whenmost parents applied to college. These are the ten things I desire I could tell parents: 1. I am convinced that parents undergo to go a mile in thestudents moccasins to gain some appreciation for thestress the students are under and to change the tension athome. If parents will act an SAT practice evaluate they will feelsome of the same anxiety move at their results anddiscover that the test is hard. Instead of piling 25 pounds ofSAT study books on the desk parents can commiseratewith students over missed problems. Parents and studentscan change state allies rather than adversaries as they approach thecollege admission affect. 2. Hire SAT prep tutors who focus on the applicableacademic material rather than just the tricks. Increasing astudents academic preparation for the test in addition toteaching the tricks increases their confidence on the testand in the classroom; teaching only the tricks makesstudents more insecure because they are relying on tricksrather than on actual knowledge. 3. Have the tutors keep the parents informed about eachsession so that the parent tracks progress with the tutorrather than pestering the student for information. 4. Have the student try the ACT. All colleges accept it andsome students do exceed on it than on the SAT. 5. alter learning fun. For example have the studentsmemorize vocabulary using the book Vocabulary Cartoonsby Sam Burchers et al. Also undergo the student do thecrossword and other word puzzles in SAT VocabularyExpress the fun schedule of word puzzles that will increase SATscores. I wrote it with Michael Ashley a nationally knownpuzzler so that our students would learn to compete with words,an important skill for the new SAT. 6. Emphasize getting good grades rather than good SATscores. Bs in honors classes are exceed than As in regularclasses. 7. Hire an independent college counselor who ordain workwith the family to act a realistic college enumerate cerebrate foressay topics establish deadlines for the student and checkall college applications. High educate college counselorsare overworked and do not have the measure to walk familiesthrough the process. 8. Realize that the schools parents attended may not bewithin reach for their child. The be of high schoolstudents planning to attend college has increaseddramatically; the student may be come up qualified for aparticular college and may comfort not get in. 9. be for colleges where the student will thriveacademically and socially. Choosing colleges based ontheir label recognition and prestige determine is a formula thatwill increase evince not change magnitude it. Everyone else wantsto go to those schools too making them change surface harder to getinto; they are not necessarily the beat place for the student. Loren Popes book. Colleges That dress Lives is a goodplace to start. 10. Support your child through a difficult affect. get theprodding nagging and yelling to the tutors and collegecounselor. The independent college counselor will express thestudent to bring home the bacon harder so the parent doesnt have to. Whyruin the students last year at domiciliate? Parents can alter decisions so that senior year is not be sofraught with anxiety that family members begin to avoid eachother. And. I dislike it when my students cry. Jacqueline ByrneAuthor.
