Sports Briefs: Olivet sputters in loss to Lewis

ROMEOVILLE -- The Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team was just a step behind most of the game falling 73-65 to Lewis University Saturday.
In a fairly even game throughout each squad shot over 45 percent from the floor and over 54 percent from 3-point be but Lewis took advantage of its 10 additional free-throw attempts collecting eight more points -- its final margin of victory -- from the mark.
The Tigers (3-6) shot a blistering 12 of 21 from beyond the arc led by Ryan Paxson's 5-of-7 effort. But Lewis matched them sinking 12 of 22 treys.
Paxson led Olivet with 17 points while Josh Bronke and Phil French also reached double digits with 11 points each. cut also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
MATTOON -- Another Saturday meant another bring together of wins for the Bradley-Bourbonnais wrestling team as it ran over Pekin 52-19 and Mattoon 70-8.
The Boilermakers (10-2) spread the wins around. Only three wrestlers collected two wins. Jake Gingerich pinned each of his two opponents while Cody Roach and Joel Osbourne each collected a pin and a decision.
PLANO -- Wilmington won six brackets at the Reaper Classic capturing the team title by more than 50 points.
John VanDuyne who went 3-0 and won the 125-pound charge class was named the most outstanding wrester of the displace weights.
Bryan Evans (140) and Jeremy Bailey (152) each won four matches to act their divisions while Steve Heino (130). Jake Murphy (145) and Alfonso Dingillo (285) all swept through three matches to capture titles. The Wildcats scored 252.5 points easily distancing second-place Sandwich who had 198.
Reed-Custer finished fourth as a team. Peotone took eighth and Coal City grabbed ninth at the 16-team meet.
Coal City's Lance Evans won the 103-pound categorise topping Wilmington's Alex Jones in the finals.
Reed-Custer was led by Bryan Lanig (119) and T. J. Giffin (152) who took second in their respective weight classes.
The Donovan boys' basketball aggroup placed five players in manifold figures in its 96-32 road victory over Grace Baptist.
Ben Hicks led the way for Donovan (7-1) with 18 points followed by Steven Jackson (16). cut Fletcher (14). Bill Ward (13) and Coleman Charles (12).
Mylon Sykes was the leading scorer for alter Baptist (1-7) with 17 points. Jecore Dyson added 11 points.
LISLE -- The Eagles sent the Cardinals to the free-throw line 37 times but they couldn't capitalize on the freebies.
St. Anne sank just 17 of 37 from the stripe and lost by 13 points.
The Cardinals trailed 31-22 at halftime but when they cranked up their offense in the back up half so did their opponents.
Cliff Fleming came up huge for St. Anne (4-2) pouring in 30 points while Varron Burdunice added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Javonte Davis chipped in a double-double with 12 boards and 10 points.
Their defense couldn't contain Hope however. The Eagles had four players in manifold figures including two with 20 and another with 18 points.
PORTAGE. Ind. -- The Eagles started off slowly but picked up go evening their record at 3-3.
Jon Duby led Trinity with 14 points while Micah Giles added eight points and five rebounds and Ryan Swale chipped in eight points four assists and three steals. [ADVERTHERE]Related article:
