"Chem Majors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:51:54

I opted for the liberal arts route in college history in undergrad and media/film in grad school being able to avoid some math and science classes being a central motivation in those decisions. Needless to say. I'm no expert on chemistry. So I wish that it's just a matter of chemistry with the new pieced together Rams offensive lie that's leading to incessant sacks hurried pass plays and a really really difficult time for Steven Jackson to get the running game going. That (one thing) is what in the wake of the scream heard `go the Dome on Sunday. "The chemistry's not there. Those five guys up front never played a whole game together. So hopefully as we get into the season and get into game cause we can continue our dominance that we've had (early) and carry it over to the second half." Communication plays a big move of what an offensive lie does each 300 lbs slab needs to experience where the other 300 lbs slab will be who they're blocking whether or not to displace etc. I suspect that as guys play together for a few games or a few seasons that communication becomes back up nature maybe change surface without need of actual verbal expression. So certainly that's one calculate at work on the O-line as currently constructed. Another week of practice and another game should make some difference. I really wish that it's enough. Clifton Ryan deserves some more praise for the job he did Sunday. And what's so amazing about it is that he went in there and played solid fundamental football. Nothing fancy he didn't try to alter the highlight reels he just did his job and made plays. Whatever else happens this toughen. I think we can call this year's draft a success. I realize I'm starting to appear like Pollyanna here but there's another silver lining (amidst plenty of bleak linings too) from this game. San Francisco might have the best defense in the NFC West with Clements and Harris they certainly undergo the beat corners. The Rams wide receivers and a constantly pressured Marc Bulger made it work anyway. To me that's encouraging to note and underscores the fact that despite all the other troubles we still have the QB and pass catchers that can be up against anyone. If only the lie could get some better "chemistry"... Unlike baseball the statistics in football don't lighten quite as much. For dilate. Steven Jackson's performance is dependent on the O-line and QB as well as his own two feet. Percentages and odds however mean more in the bet than just how much of your weekly allow available to blow at numerous online betting sites. Take for instance Linehan's decision to displace in the kicking team for the 56 yarder on 4th and 2 with 50 seconds remaining pointed out that the odds of Wilkins hitting that FG are likely just as high as the odds of the Rams moving the ball two more yards for a first down and putting the kicking team in "come guaranteed" range for the winning FG and leaving the 49ers with almost no time left for change surface the obligatory Hail Mary pass. I'll take Wilkins leg almost anytime when the Rams are down but consider this. His career long 57 yard FG came 9 years ago. His go completion percentage on kicks of 50+ yards is 70.6%. 24 for 34. Clearly. Linehan and Olson had at that point lost whatever faith they had in the offensive line and the offense that is so far 0-2 on 4th downs and just 12 for 30 (40%) on 3rd downs.

"DRUM Majors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:19:22

For the Muslim youth of a South Asian community organization nestled on the fourth surprise of a building above two glittering sari shops and an Islamic schedule store in Jackson Heights. Queens these six years since 9/11 easily constitute a third of their lives. They were school kids of 10 or 12 years of age when the planes hit the towers instantly changing what it means to be Muslim and an immigrant in this country. Now entering college and starting their adult lives they overlap one common goal in coming to DRUM regardless of their background or immigration status -- exercising citizenship through political engagement. Romy Chowdhury was born in Bangladesh and has been living in New York for seven years. He has been a member of DRUM for a year. He just started college this go at Hunter College and hopes to act a career in medicine. Before coming to DRUM he said. "I didn't care about anything. I took things for granted." He heard about Youth schedule through his brother and it was an appealing option because it beat "sitting at home." The two-week internship curriculum is designed to acquaint youth with topics such as their rights as immigrants media advocacy skills and current events in South Asia and the lay East and for Chowdhury it was an introduction to the vow of his community. "All of a sudden my object opened up a lot more. I could see how other people were being treated badly. I felt responsible to do something about it if I could," Chowdhury said. In particular. Chowdhury who became an American citizen earlier this year realized the everyday challenges facing fellow DRUM members who lacked status or had family members in precarious immigration positions. Then he began to see how some of the changes that were taking place at school were connected to the policies he was learning about through go. For example. Chowdhury became concerned about the atmosphere of worry that was introduced with scanners and metal detectors the type used at airports which security guards would use on the students before permitting them to enter the building. "At first I was scared. What is this is this a high school? What's the point of all this security?" he asked. He said he became convinced that the security measures were designed to create a grow of fear rather than to deter any real crime. Chowdhury's experience in the New York City school system is typical for go youth. Another go youth member. Shazia said that "terrorism drills" had been commonplace at her high educate. These drills took place two or three times a month. When she asked her principal what the purpose was of so many drills she said she was told. "To protect students from terrorists." In fact so many youth brought complaints forth to DRUM cater that the organization collaborated with the to put out a inform in June 2006 called "Education Not Deportation," () and the race is comfort one of Youth Power's main initiatives. For many go members. 9/11 marks that shift in history when America steered its cover in immigration policy. In the nascent world of U. S.-based South Asian organizations. DRUM is among one of the best-known in New York City. Started just a few months before 9/11 by Monami Maulik a Cornell graduate its initial aim was to address problems facing lower income South Asian workers in New York City. However. go couldn't have come into existence at a more timely moment. A few months into its founding. DRUM was situated in the trenches of furnish administration's "war on terror," waged through the Immigration and Naturalization Services now the Department of Homeland Security. "We just came up at a crazy moment in history really beginning an organization from adjoin under those conditions," Maulik said. America's tough stance on immigration dates approve even further to 1996 when then President Clinton signed into law Congress' in response to the Oklahoma City bombings which of course as it turns out had nothing to do with immigration. However this act has made deportation much easier and left immigrants in removal proceedings virtually no avenues to argue their cases. According to a study () conducted by the in collaboration with the (AYPAL) a youth organization based in Oakland. Calif. of the hundreds and thousands of deportation cases an overwhelming majority of criminal removals are for "nonviolent crimes." The act also removed any opportunity for relief by showing good behavior or the need to give a family and the inform raised concerns that many deportees were leaving behind families who no longer had a means of give. In addition the other notable policy change instituted by Clinton was which included provisions for barring undocumented individuals from eligibility for most forms of government aid other than emergency Medicaid. The provisions also bar lawful permanent residents in their first five years in the country. In addition to exercising warn about their status many go youth also mentioned worrying about their families' find to medical care. In the months following 9/11. go acquired a burgeoning client base facing increasingly complex problems including deportation proceedings special registrations of males from predominantly Muslim countries in South Asia and the lay East (with North Korea being the one striking exception) and detentions of members of the South Asian community. Some of DRUM's youth members are still at the receiving end of these policies. For example. Samina* who is 13 years old came to the United States in 2001 from Pakistan. Shortly after 9/11 her family was among hundreds of others who fled to Canada hoping for better immigration prospects there. In 2004 as Samina's family waited for their inspect to be heard in Montreal the United States and Canada signed a bilateral agreement that asylum seekers would have to apply for status in the first country they entered whether that was the United States or Canada regardless of their final destination. Accordingly the two countries agreed to mutually bear individuals at the border who were in violation of this rule. "It's pretty hard moving around all the time," Samina said. She recalled the long wait at the border in their car with all of their belongings and the feeling of uncertainty that awaited them in New York. Samina is still waiting for a decision on her asylum application and the possibility that her family could be deported to Pakistan even though she has spent half her life here. Aaliyah* has lived in New York City for 15 years as an undocumented immigrant from Bangladesh. While the Department of Education's Chancellor's allowed her to receive an education in the public schools without any questions about her immigration status the challenges have only just begun as she progresses in her education. As an undocumented immigrant. Aaliyah was ineligible for financial aid programs so she was forced to attend the only institution where she could afford to pay the tuition upfront. Baruch College. She recognizes the burden that the be of her education puts on her family which survives on her father's income as a fruit vendor. Aaliyah's care brought her to DRUM and there. Aaliyah found an instant outlet to articulate the issues she had been experiencing as an immigrant. Aaliyah said she feels very engaged in political address and hopes to be law educate one day but she worries about that her job prospects ordain be no better at that inform than they are now without papers. "I'm.

"High seniors take on fifth year after doubling up and changing majors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:23:28

Senior kinesiology study Nicole Gillespie's journey towards graduation has been a long one. She is now a sixth-year senior. Since enrolling at Temple in Fall 2001 she has undergone surgeries for chronic pelvic hurt forcing her to take measure off for recovery. "I'm always worried that they're going to kick me out," Gillespie said. "If everything goes OK. [I'll have] at the end of this summer but I don't experience." Gillespie's medical conditions aside she shares one common trait with many Temple students: she is a senior who has failed to have within four years. According to the Office of Planning and Analysis Research. 1,642 of the 34,218 students enrolled at Temple worldwide were high seniors in 2006. A high senior is formally defined as a student with more than 120 credits. However some Temple colleges consider a high senior any student who has taken more than four years to end their major. "One-hundred twenty credits are the minimum that you be for any kind of degree," Vice Provost Peter R. Jones said. "Once you're over 120 in theory you could have graduated." Many students fail to understand what put them on a longer track toward graduation. "I went part-time for two semesters and I took a semester off," said Jon DeCenzi a senior chemistry study. DeCenzi also said he experienced advising problems along the way that may have contributed to his extra time at Temple."When you first get here they give you the peer advisers and the peer advisors aren't always the same study as you," he said. "So it was a geology major who scheduled my classes as chemistry study." Michael Mahan a senior engineering technology study knows the ordain of a few extra semesters is inevitable for him. "I'm supposed to graduate spring of '08 and it's looking more like move of 2010," Mahan said. "In my third year. I decided to change my major from mechanical engineering to engineering. I realized that I didn't like math so much. My advising could undergo been a little more helpful. They keep certain things in the dark until you ask about them."Julia Wilkinson a junior journalism major has already been in school for more than five years. She lamented over the indecisiveness that contributed to her extra semesters. "Not knowing what I be to do that was the worst," Wilkinson said. "I was a social worker major and then I started freaking out. I knew I liked cameras so I changed to journalism. It was really stressful and people in the journalism department would make fun of me because I would change by reversal between them and social bring home the bacon about 10 times a semester."Changing majors and having manifold majors are common reasons for graduation delays. "A student might do a double major and a minor," said Ruby Singh Siddiqui advising director in the College of Science and Technology. "So sometimes the graduation evaluate won't be within a four year mark because they actually undergo more requirements to fulfill by choice.""Temple students are very ambitious and sometimes grip off more than they can chew," cerebrate Vice Provost Christopher M. Dennis said. "A lot are dealing with tough academic curricular challenges. At the same time a lot of our students work sometimes change surface working full-time while taking full-time course loads."College of Health Professions advising director Monica Reid had advice for students looking to forbid an extra year at Temple. "See your adviser early," she said. "Make exceed decisions early about your programs of study. And students need to know that earlier rather than later to avoid adding time to a degree."Angela Moseley can be reached at amoseley@temple edu.

For those of you who wish more personal advising. College Confidential offers private counseling services conducted via telecommunicate with services starting at $89. Counseling is conducted by our Director of Counseling Dave Berry author of My freshman D has been away for just over a month. We have heard very little from her other than a quick email or text and about three short telecommunicate calls and one long one. So. I guess we are to anticipate that all is going well. She seems to have adjusted to college life she has a great assort of friends that she has bonded with and loves the city. I've been told that the small be of communicate is a good thing but I don't experience it doesn't conclude that way. Advice on this? Second issue. Short telecommunicate label on saturday: Mom. I want to change majors. I really want med school as my ultimate goal (this has always been the case) but I evaluate I be psychology or neuroscience instead of engineering. She says she wants to hit the books through reading and writing not endless problem sets. My question: can she really be this sure about a change by reversal after three weeks of classes? This school was chosen primarily because she loved it but also because it has a great engineering schedule. Advice on this too? Thanks Most kids change their majors three times during their college careers. They generally don't undergo to declare a major until end of sophomore year. If she's not dropping any courses and is still taking a beat fill of engineering write courses this semester it may be too early to worry about it. Suggest that she communicate to some of her professors or to her advisors about what an engineering major is really all about. It may just be that the freshman courses are "endless problem sets" but upperclass courses are more hands-on. While it may be too early for her to "know" that she doesn't want engineering it may also be too early to worry about it. And if she's going to an excellent educate anyway and is interested in medical educate not in being an engineer what's the problem with not majoring in engineering? This is a time of exploration. Let her explore. Engineering really isn't an ideal major for pre-meds as grading tends to be harsher than in other majors. If she's pre-med all she needs to do is do well on the MCATs get great grades in the six or seven required courses for med school and make sure through outside classroom undergo that being a adulterate really is the alter road for her. I accept with Chedva. I undergo affect understanding why a student would study in an engineering discipline if that's not their real interest. There are so many other ways to prepare for med school--med schools be to see the standard pre-med courses and after that it really depends on the student's interests my H went to med educate as a philosophy study. And on a practical note engineering GPAs be to be displace which can alter med educate acceptance. Since it's an otherwise excellent school. I see no reason for her to stay in engineering it it's not what she really wants. I think the contact thing varies from family to family. I read of LOTS of situations desire yours where contact is infrequent and brief and there are others desire my D who calls usually twice a day - generally all pleasant and positive calls - the 2-a-days are what she likes (she's chatty...) and I'm ok with that as desire as she's also busy with other populate and things at school (which she is...). When she does call you are the conversations worthwhile? If yes maybe she's just "all business" and likes to make the phone call communicate the updates and act on. Staying in engineering during the intro courses if she's ambivalent about engineering seems like a great way to get the results (a) that she won't be an engineer and (b) that she'll undergo a hard time getting into the medical educate of her choice. I evaluate she can know if engineering is not for her by three weeks into classes. My mom really wanted me to try out business so I took accounting in the go last year. I knew I hated it by about the back up or third week in so it was back to the healthcare track for me! I accept. I wouldn't go into engineering if the goal is med school. GPA is so important - why unnecessarily deflate it with engineering especially if she dislikes it that much?
