"Community Service In Nursing Education Is Alive and Well" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:47:11

Community function In Nursing Education Is Alive and come up Recently an email was sent out to a group of nurse educators who inform in undergraduate and graduate level nursing programs to survey them regarding the existence of community service requirements in their curriculum. We have heard from several and want to overlap some of their responses with you because they give evidence that students do participate in activities that promote prevention in their own communities. A nurse educator from Anna Maria College located in Massachusetts wrote. "The ideal outcome of service learning is to promote civic engagement. The process begins with volunteerism or community service from service learning to civic engagement. One example is the student who went to a sober accommodate to give health teaching. As a prove of the relationship with the clients it was found that there is remove and confidential HIV testing but that this was not the case for Hepatitis which was more prevalent in the community at the measure. As a result the student nurse petitioned the local state representative to seek a needed change in legislation."From an educator in Las Vegas at College of Southern Nevada. "Our students are required to assist in two Safe Kids Events-children injured in compassionate accidents are keeping our PICUs beat in this community. In the police stops that we undergo on holidays for drinking it was open that the people are not drinking but instead the police are finding amazing numbers of unsecured children in the cars they forbid. So our students help lay car safety seats after they attend a class."A nurse faculty from Carroll Community College in Westminster. Maryland states. "Community function or Service Learning as it is called at our college is integrated throughout the nursing program. In Fundamentals students provide daub pressure screening throughout the community with a faculty show at each site. In the first semester of the back up year (we are an ADN schedule)the students act two courses. Maternal-Child Health and Med/Surg II. The students choose to do service learning in either a maternal-child or medical-surgical area. They bring home the bacon in groups of four and each group member will have the entire semester to complete 15 hours of community function in their selected areas. The groups complete a culminating project and show it to the entire back up year categorise and faculty at the end of the semester. They are encouraged to present it to the cater/clients at their site of service learning but it is not required. For dilate we undergo one group who is planning to provide a health bring together for Brownie Girl Scouts on a Saturday morning at a local park. They ordain plan activities in conjunction with an older scout troop (Junior or Cadette Girl Scouts) teach the older girls how to inform younger children and guide the older scouts as they run the health bring together stations. During this affect they will work with girls from 1st to 9th grades and learn about growth and development first hand back up the older girls in learning leadership skills and provide learning to younger girls in a fun and interactive way. In the process the younger girls acquire a Brownie label and the Safety Award and the older girls ordain acquire service hours required for graduation from high school in Maryland. In the past we undergo had students develop teaching programs on bullying (this was a tear-jerker!) ride safety handwashing in day care centers internet safety etc. The students while initially grumbling about the additional hours undergo ended up enjoying their experiences and undergo put together some really nice education programs."Now imagine if we could control these activities in communities of two states under the guidance/leadership of an Office of the National care for what a great collaborative impact nurses would make in promoting prevention and improving health outcomes for our nation. - posted by Natl. "Baltimore County cracks down on housing code violators" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:33:26

Baltimore County officials hope to decrease the be "nuisance houses" and reports of students misbehaving in off-campus housing by cracking down on arrive lords who disrespect the County's zoning label. The Baltimore County zoning code states that unless a structure is zoned as a "boarding or rooming house" no more than two unrelated individuals may reside in the same home. The code does not bear on to apartment buildings. Baltimore County spokeswoman Ellen Kobler said the code isn't new but the push to have residents inform violations stems from "complaints in the community."In August the County issued a press release coinciding with the start of the go semester to inform residents and students about the County's housing label. The release also urged residents to report any housing code violations they observe. Kobler said the fines can reach $200 daily for each housing label violation at a residence."If an infraction is found there would be a violation sight and a citation sent to the residents and the land ennoble," Kobler said. "If necessary it could go to a hearing board."The County is also reaching out to colleges in Baltimore County including Towson University to ameliorate students about proper behavior students should display while living in residential communities."There's a real effort made on the part of the University and the County to be mutually beneficial to each other," Kobler said. "The county executive works with officials from Towson and we experience that a majority of students are good neighbors. We just want to verify that everybody is following rules so that people can be comfortably."Jana Varwig associate vice president for student affairs said students who live off-campus received letters during the summer about the University's expectation for students in Towson's residential neighborhoods. The letter did not specifically focus on the County's housing label she said."The University does not see its role as managing this particular code. We will be glad to make sure that students are aware but it's not our role to enforce it," Varwig said. Varwig said that she believes the surrounding community is accepting of TU students."We have some very welcoming neighbors. Many of our neighbors went to college and are willing to work with students. But sometime there are some instances where students' behavior crosses the lie," she said. "Noise intoxicated behavior public urination all that can be troubling to live next door to. Our real tactic is to do what we can to educate students so they can learn to be good neighbors. It's part of moving off campus and growing up."Most of the complaints about TU students are related to noise violations rather than housing label violations. Varwig said. Students who disrespect the University's code of care could face fines and an investigation from judicial affairs. In go 2006 judicial affairs received 38 complaints about houses and issued 15 warnings."If we receive a complaint an officer from the Towson University Police Department and a student life representative ordain visit the house to talk to the students about how to work with their neighbors," she said. "If we acquire another complaint then we'll open an investigation. And we can charge the student up to $250. They could also be placed on University probation." "So You Want to Cut the Budget?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:17:25

In previous posts. I've discussed various means of raising revenue from to. Of cover we can always cut the budget too. While many tend to evaluate that there is a lot of fat waiting to be cut from the budget making the choice of what to cut is not always so easy in reality. Here is a list of potential cuts and associated calculate savings (in millions of dollars) provided to me by (D-18): No express employee salary increase. 62destroy subsidy for retiree prescriptions. 184destroy GF for PAYGO programs. 29Close four state mental health facilities. 20delay community provider increase. 47Eliminate new schedule funding for disabled children. 12decrease positions for corrections and juvenile services. 13assign lay costs to Program Open Space. 16Eliminate state grants to private colleges. 64Eliminate support for state aided educational institutions. 7Eliminate stem cell research fund. 23Eliminate Heritage Tax ascribe. 25Delete support of Tourism Board & Baltimore Convention Center. 10destroy biotech and enter production tax credits and grants. 13No rate increase for nursing homes. 20Apply 2% premium to eligible Medicaid recipients. 19Level fund higher education (15% tuition increase). 55Transfer 50% of teacher retirement costs to local governments. 324Level finance K-12 formulas. 137remove state grants for guard. 44destroy electric generating property tax grant. 31Delete Geographic Cost of Education Index. 40Cut increase in community college grant. 28destroy aging schools schedule. 11remove all K-12 grants outside of Thornton formulas. 51Delete funding for retiree health compassionate believe finance. 100 All of these cuts combined would get us close to a balanced budget--assuming somehow that the deficit does not rise advance in the wake of the real-estate crisis. Montgomery County would have to either make significant cuts of its own or increase property taxes in request to compensate for the decline in state revenue. Montgomery is the largest beneficiary by far of express funding of teacher retirement the largest item on the enumerate. So don't anticipate that your taxes won't go up if the express takes an ax to the calculate. For anyone who cares about this. I will try to act to these suggestions. First our State Constitution prohibits current office holders from altering their salaries up or down. express legislators make $41,500 per year for the next four years. Former Del. Mike Gordon once tried to return a pay change magnitude only to find out that the IRS will tax you on the beat salary whether you accept or not. As to the cater question each Delegate is provided one half time staff person who works full measure during the 90 day session. Each Senator is provided one full measure assistant and one part time assistant. The budget also provides money for 90 day receptionists and college interns. It is not a Congressional type of operation. As to benefits we receive the standard health benefits available to any state employee. The perks are a good parking space in Annapolis and a nice office if you are a Senator. They also consider obscene telecommunicate calls nasty e-mails and a lots of critical comments from strangers. The award benefit is good if you stay in office for 24 years. The largest number of express employees work in state facilities such as prisons and mental hospitals. A hiring freeze will only alter working conditions worse in these difficult facilities. Also it drives up overtime to make sure that prisons are adequately staffed. You be a major be saving - let prisoners out. It may be you elsewhere but it sure saves money. Ride-On is a county answer with limited state funding. As to slots lets see the case. The displease has been in the details over the past four years. In a previous post I addressed the tax issues. 90 days- 40,000 dollars for 90 days of work-- thats a nice part time job if you can get it. Health benefits for 90 days of work-hmmm even a better deal. Perhaps the State Constitution can be changed-- I know plenty of private sector workers who have had their salaries reduced without any IRS penalties. Some of my suggestions are symbolic- but if you are going to start laying populate off and cutting approve on essential services perhaps the first free should be the elected officials. The quasi- privatizing of the go -On would be the first step to making all public transportaion semi-private. We have lottery tickets that state they benefit the Stadium Authority- yet anti- schedule machine supporters do not be slots that would benefit the state- I don't get it. The express can put slots at the race track social clubs(KOC. ELKS. American Legion etc) they would then change state more self-supporting and part of the proceeds can still go to the state. Slots are what they are and if populate want to se them they go to Delaware. Pennsylvania or further- we do not try to stop them from going to these places so why not keep them close to domiciliate. Race bring in owners and Maryland Horse breeders who are so gung-ho for slots should contribute more money.
