This accept message goes away when you register and log in! My daughter who has always been interested in classical (opera) music is expressing an interest in possible studying vocal jazz music in college. Can anyone furnish me any suggestions for outstanding vocal jazz colleges or conservatories? Also are there any vocal jazz competitions for high school students that would allow her to get her feet wet in this area? She has competed in many classical competitions but I don't know anything about the jazz world. Any assistance would be appreciated. Berklee might fit. I attended one of their vocal showcases at their theater which featured an impressive range of pop play blues vocals etc. and some of the kids change surface seemed to be majoring as "backup" singers. The only competitions I know of are the T. Monk and Betty Carter competitions but they may not be for HS age. References you can check out include the October issue of Downbeat and the Association for Jazz Education: A few programs: Berklee offers a five week summer schedule for jazz students that includes vocalists. From what I can tell. Berklee seems to be the place that most of the top student jazz vocalists be given toward. The Grammy Ensemble features a play choir. It is highly competitive taking two spots for each voice category. Students nationwide audition by submission of videotapes and selections are announced sometime in December. The students are flown out to California in January or early February for a week of practicing and performances leading up to the Grammy Awards telecast where they perform at the pre and post shows and actually get to attend the telecast! Pretty exciting. Check the grammy foundation website for more details. The NFAA program for high school seniors and freshman college students (under age 19. I believe) also has a category for jazz vocalists. wish this helps. Good luck. I forgot to have in mind two other programs: DownBeat Magazine sponsors an annual competition for student jazz perfomers junior high school age through college including vocalists. Submissions are due in December and the results are announced in the June issue. I know Berklee and the New School furnish scholarships to selected finalists in various categories. I accept the Brubeck Institute run by the University of the Pacific also takes vocalists.

"Music/Food in UK Sixth-Form Colleges 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 15:16:42

This is really a personal undergo question that I don't think I could answer come up with Google. When I was at college at the follow end of the 90s we had a student-run radio displace (and a lot of guys strumming guitars) in the common dwell; they played a lot of Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Mansun and the desire and I saw a lot of Offspring and NOFX t-shirts. So my question is to the people who are at college (or even university) in the UK at the moment: what's the equivalent of that these days? Which bands/songs are getting played incessantly in student venues and who's everybody going to see in concert and/or wearing on their T-shirts?Also a quick secondary challenge: when I was at college we subsisted on pizza slices and bacon sandwiches. Is that comfort a likely option or have independent sixth-form colleges been hit by the same displace towards healthy eating as the schools? is the university radio station for Southampton University. They undergo playlists on the website and a listen online option should give you a few hints towards what sort of thing is being played. When I was at sixth form in London the radio displace of choice (and the one that got played in our sixth create common room) was. Again they undergo a comprehend online option and playlist information. I don't know about concerts as such because that really depends on what write of music they are into but Glastonbury. Reading Festival. Leeds Festival. Download and Isle of Wight Festival are all very popular (or Knebworth and Donington if they prefer 'harder' rock/metal). Most six form colleges undergo canteens but these are not controlled by the LEA (who are the ones initiating the healty eating at the moment)as far as I know. However some of them have started to inform more healthy options. But the really unhealthy ones are also still on furnish (they are doing it as a business thing - there is now a maket in 'healthy' - but they are also aware that the old unhealthy stuff is equally popular). The educate schemes have more been aimed at educating children it is assumed adults already know what is/isn't good for them. In the colleges I have worked in there is a lot of R&B and Hip Hop and Gangsta cram knocking around but that is mainly because these were in areas with a large asian and black population. I evaluate a lot of the older rock stuff is still popular though. i'm currently at a sixth create in suffolk it just had to get rid of the coffee bar that sold all the lovely chocolate / pot noodles etc :( now we only undergo shitty healthy options that no-one wants (wholemeal pizza and tuna rolls etc.) so people go drink to the divide shop / go and get chinese if they want something cooked for lunch there has been a big displace towards healthy eating in general some popular bands at the moment are: hadouken! fall out boy my chemical romance the killers muse kate nash panic! at the dance the foo fighters the fratellis etc of varying quality but they're all vaguely 'alternative' (or claim to be) and they're the choose of acts that populate go to see in contrive. Well. I just finished sixth form so I think I can alter you in.. but only on the details of my own place a sixth create college attached to a secondary school in a rural town. (Fortunately we didn't undergo to feature uniform. :)We had nothing so advanced as a communicate station but there was a CD system in one of the common rooms.. until it got nicked. There were two old-ish Portakabin common rooms - it was common practice that the 'greebo' folks and skaters and other alternatives stayed in one (the CD-playered one) and the 'chavs' and more traditionally popular guys hung out in the other. In the alternative common room there were often guitars being strummed and drumsticks hit upon tables and so on. I don't evaluate the CD player got replaced... As for food - if staying onsite sixth formers got their food from the school canteen which had various hatches around the place. But it's adjust it had been pushed into healthy food: they eliminated chips and the hit pizza slices and unhealthy hamburgers... We did bring home the bacon to adjoin onto our fizzy drinks vending machine in the sixth create block though and got to follow the younger years away from it. But not many sixth formers stayed onsite to eat. At exploit we used to go out from the lie of the educate and either cross the recreation fasten to buy Ginsters pasties and the desire from the petrol displace or we'd walk 'downtown' about maybe half a mile away to the high street where we could get heated pasties from the bakery or baguettes and baked potatoes from another shop a little further down. Ooh hang on - as to the music people do comprehend to it really depends. (I'm a rock music maniac so I generally tuned in to that kind of thing.) My little gang of what people liked to call 'goths' hung out in one of the rooms off the main corridor and we were possibly the most music-oriented people the the sixth form. General favourites were Billy Talent. Enter Shikari. Biffy Clyro (aka Stiffy Biro :D). AFI. Atreyu. Killswitch act. Avenged Sevenfold and to some extend Fall Out Boy... A hell of a lot of us went to Download this year and some to the Give It A Name festival too. As for the skaters who hung out mainly in the 'alternative' common dwell... I've heard that they preferred the more hardcore DJs. I really don't have a clue about them. Girly favourites? McFly. Girls Aloud probably. Mika. Akon. Rihanna. Sorry for heaping info on you. I may be slightly psychologically revisiting it now I know I desire the displace so much.
