"health care officials fear federal officials may cut funding for ..." posted by ~Ray

Area lawmakers and health care officials fear federal officials may cut funding for hospital-based nursing schools. U. S. Sen. Charles Schumer. D-N. Y. said a retroactive interpretation of existing laws could cost St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica as well as Crouse and St. Joseph’s hospitals of Syracuse between $1.5 million and $3 million apiece for their nursing colleges.“This cavalier slash-and-burn attitude towards our nursing education programs is over the top and must be stopped,” Schumer said.“At a time when we face a severe shortage of nurses and nursing faculty the feds want to cut millions of dollars from vital hospital-based teaching programs,” he said. As a result. Schumer introduced legislation that he says would ensure St. Elizabeth College of Nursing and the other schools will continue to get funding from Medicare. The worry. Schumer said stems from similar funding cuts that have taken place across the country. St. Elizabeth. Mohawk Valley Community College and Utica College have programs to train and certify nurses.“We do graduate a significant number of the area’s nurses,” said Marianne Monahan president of St. Elizabeth College of Nursing. According to the New York State Department of Labor the Mohawk Valley needs about 50 licensed practical nurses and 150 registered nurses each year making it a high-demand profession in the area. Monahan said her school’s funding had not been immediately threatened but Schumer’s legislation would allow the school protection and flexibility in the future. She added that the college could survive funding cuts but would seriously consider the consequences of such cuts. Monahan said it would stay committed to properly training nurses because of the area’s vital need for the profession. Casey Napoli the employment manager at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare said nurses are hard to find and one of the resources that helps the hospital is local schools.“We have connections with a number of schools in the area,” Napoli said. “One of the things we rely on is the schools around here.”Napoli said many of her nurses are locally trained especially registered nurses which are particularly hard to find. Napoli said while finding nurses has always been a challenge it may even be more so in the future.“It’s something that has always been a challenge for us,” she said. “I’m sure you’ve heard in the coming years with the baby boomers retiring we’re going to need a lot of people to fill those ”

"Why So Sad, Doc?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:44:26

A doctor is of prime importance in any country. I recently went to meet my friend who is working in a government hospital in Mumbai. At the OPD there was a big queue of patients and so I didn’t disturb him. I waited for half an hour and then left with some thoughts in my mind. As I was returning. I realized the importance of a doctor to each of us. Each doctor there was looking after 5-6 patients in a span of 10 minutes and trying his best to help the patients.. A doctor is compared to God but I wonder why a doctor has to undergo so much stress. This stress is related to shortage of doctors and other medical professionals in the country and the assault on them if they make any small mistake. There has been numerous incidents where a doctor has been attacked or a hospital been vandalized when a case goes wrong. The government has failed to stop such assaults. Leave that aside the most important thing that bothers me as a citizen of the country when India is marching to achieve Vision 2020 is the shortage of medical professionals. The Planning Commission Report 2008 has thrown some light on the present manpower crunch plaguing the Indian healthcare industry which will be further exacerbated by the high demand for Indian healthcare professionals around the world. According to a Planning Commission report while India is short of six lakh doctors. 10 lakh nurses and two lakh dental surgeons. Indian doctors who have migrated to developed countries form nearly 5% of their medical workforce. This shortage affects the efficiency of the doctors as they are over burdened. At the same time they are paid so less a remuneration that it furthers dampen their spirit. There are numerous reasons for the same. The entrance for medical studies is so tough in the country that if 100 students get through for MBBS courses only 10 manage a seat in PG course and 1 in super specialization courses. This is because there are very few seats available. Reservations on these less seats make it more pathetic. This leads to brain drain and till date our government has not addressed the problem with seriousness it should have. If the things are not taken care of right now then probably after a decade we will hardly find a doctor. According to the report the doctor to patient ratio stands at six per 10,000 people— much below than that of Australia (249:1) the UK (1,665:5) and the US (548:9). The shortage of medical practitioners is acute in states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand with just two doctors for 1. 00,000 people according to another study. The figures are worse in the rural areas. The need of the hour is to immediately focus on the solution rather than mulling on them. We need to set up more medical dental paramedical and nursing colleges but also to substantially increase the number of seats in the existing colleges. Moreover there should be encouragement for more private participation because I have full belief that government of India won’t be able to address the problems on its own because of politics and bureaucracy involved in each step. We need to build world class infrastructure. The government has some plans in the 11th Five year plan to open six AIIMS-like institutions and upgrading 13 existing medical institutes besides 60 new medical colleges and 225 nursing colleges. But whether they materialize on time remains to be seen. There are projections that the Indian healthcare industry would become a $ 75 billion industry by 2012 with medical tourism reaching $ 2 billion in the same span. These are the rosy figures but with current situation I doubt whether we will be able to enter this predicted golden-era. "Nursing education in the 11th plan" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:33:23

Inaugurating the College of Nursing of the Lady Hardinge Medical College and Associated Hospital today the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss said the concept of nursing has expanded over the years and is no longer confined to the hospitals and patient care alone. Today the nurses are the sheet fasten of our be health care delivery system. Our main aim is to provide primary health care including the preventive promotive and rehabilitative services as close to the doorsteps of the people as possible. Smt. Sheila Dixit. Chief attend of Delhi. Smt. Panabaka Lakshmi. attend of State for Health & Family Welfare. Shri Naresh Dayal. Secretary (HFW). Dr. R. K. Srivastava. DGHS. Dr. Deepak Pantal. Vice-Chancellor. Delhi University and other senior officials from the Ministry and Medical Institutions were also present. “Training educate for Nurses in the LHMC started very modestly in 1916 with 11 probationers admitted to the school for training every year. This has been expanded to admit 55 pupil nurses each year. The educate provides training facilities for diploma course in nursing. Keeping in mind to improve the quality of nursing services and need for training more graduate Nurses we have upgraded the School of Nursing into College of Nursing. We are in the process of upgrading 2 more Schools of Nursing into College of Nursing in RML Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. I would also desire to congratulate the first batch of students who have just taken the admission in this prestigious institution. We are upgrading the Schools of Nursing which are attached with Medical Colleges into Colleges of Nursing in the country. Nursing binds the human society with a silken bond of love and affection. We may take it as the best example of national integrity as the nurses serve the humanity without prejudice of caste colour creed region or language. The pioneers like Florence Nightingale and Mother Teressa undergo built the bridges of international understanding and cooperation with their sense of function and self-sacrifice. The nursing profession occupies a strategic position in the primary health care network. They are the mainstay of our health care delivery system who take the services to the doorsteps of the people in the villages remote and tribal areas including economically weaker sections in cities and towns. Hence nurses are being trained for unconventional roles that of promoting health practices educating people about disease prevention offering family welfare services counseling and motivation. They are the ones who provide the most vital maternal and child health compassionate services to the community. The role of nurses is very vital in this assay. A large number of nursing personnel are required under NRHM to serve at Primary Health Centers. The Nursing educational Institutions will be strengthened to improve the quality of the training and additional Nursing educational institutions ordain be established under NRHM. In the strategic framework for Nursing during XIth five-year plan we undergo identified 230 districts in the country where there are no Auxiliary Nurse - midwives (ANM) and Graduate care for - midwives (GNM) institutions. It is proposed to open new ANM and GNM Schools in these districts during the XIth Plan period. It is also proposed to open 4 Regional Colleges of Excellence with state of art facilities to improve the quality of Nursing Education in the country. A furnish of Rs. 319 crores has been proposed for XIth Plan for the strengthening of Nursing Education in the country. At show about 9.05 lakhs nurses so far registered with various state Nursing Councils in India. There are about 1597 nursing schools and about 833 B. Sc. (N) Colleges and 97 M. Sc (N) colleges are functioning in the country with capacity to instruct 79850 diploma nurses. 41650 graduate nurses and 1940 post graduate nurses per year respectively. However there is a need for expanding the training facilities and also equally sanctioning the additional nursing posts for adopting optimum nurse patient ratio. Keeping in view the need to review the existing training facilities for nurses and additional resources have been earmarked for their expansion. At the same time qualitative aspects should not be overlooked. We should furnish them with better skills and higher education. We should also take care to ensure best possible utilization of available trained manpower so that their skills are not wasted. The services rendered by nurses can never be compensated in terms of money. Nurses should not compromise the spirit of the profession for mere monetary reasons. Therefore there is a need to rededicate to introspect and to see how best the quality of nursing care can be provided to needy patients in the hospitals and community.
