"A Collegial Post-Election Agenda for Higher Education" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:48:54

To date we´ve heard very little about higher education in this presidential race. Neither Senator Obama nor Senator McCain has proposed any bold changes to make college more accessible or affordable nor to address the issue of military recruiting on campus. I would like to weigh in with a few suggestions. They might not sound as sexy as a $4,000 public service credit for public service as Senator Obama has proposed but they are equally important. First is the need for a serious overhaul of student loan programs. Prior to the Gingrich Congress elected in 1994 student lending was direct lending meaning that the college evaluated financial need and served as lender. They were also responsible for collecting the debt. Banks welcomed the switch to private management; the strongest could become preferred lenders and take the collection fees for themselves. However bankers crossed the line when they proposed to tie lending decisions to a private definition of a school´s quality and paid incentives to college financial aid officers to maintain their preferred status. The government has the right to punish schools in a direct lending program—for poor collection rates—but it does not need to tie academic quality and lending together. Unaccredited institutions are already ineligible for financial aid programs. A new president and Congress must give more consideration to the student borrower. This starts with an achievable goal: anyone who can earn an academic scholarship should be able to go to college regardless of their family´s income. An aid package should make that possible without leaving a graduating senior with a $50,000 debt. Borrowing limits need to be increased combined with pressure on colleges to become more accountable to report on their spending and financial management practices. The goal needs to be that every student who starts school can finish assuming sound academic progress. There should also be a temporary "stimulus" for recent graduates in the form of a one year "grace period for repayment to allow more time to find employment and save money to begin repaying loans. When I was in college. I had nine months before I had to begin repaying student loans. During President Reagan´s administration the grace period was shortened to six months. However. President Reagan never faced a national credit crisis like the country has today nor could his team have ever forecasted the student debt crisis we have today. Or that parents would not be able to share responsibility for that debt with students. Lastly neither candidate has addressed the issue of military service in much depth although Senator Obama has expressed support to repeal "don´t-ask don´t-tell," and Senator McCain has been a long-time proponent of a strong national defense. A recent story in the Chronicle of Higher Education revealed that the Pentagon had requested funds for ROTC programs to produce 5,350 second lieutenants within the next three years up from 4,300 today. The armed forces need to fill that need through expansion of the ROTC programs on college campuses including military science instruction at schools that do not offer it on-campus right now. The armed forces are already 200 short of their 2008 goal and opposition to expansion of ROTC by college administrators has been tied to "don´t ask don´t tell."Thus. ROTC expansion should be granted pending immediate repeal of "don´t ask don´t tell." If U. S corporations can include gay and lesbians within their executive leadership with no downturn in morale then so can the armed forces. Bill Clinton tried to repeal policies that prevented openly gay and lesbian soldiers from military service; the result was "don´t ask don´t tell." But he did not use a carrot and stick approach to do it. ROTC is the right carrot for repeal. I know that economic issues and the war in Iraq have taken center stage in this campaign. That´s no surprise because they affect all of us. But the next president has the chance to reform higher education policies that are outdated and ineffective. The failed policies of not only the George W. Bush administration but also previous presidents and Congress must be overturned.

The college graduates who are soon to complete training at the nation’s oldest naval air displace ordain be the final class to have from the locate’s officer candidate school ending a military tradition that lasted about seven decades. “Hundreds of classes have suffered out there” on the exercise handle and parade deck at Pensacola Naval Air Station said Allen Hamby a 21-year-old admiral’s son and University of Central Florida have who plans to be a supply officer. “And we are going to be the last class doing it.” Back in the day recent Naval Academy graduates often arrived in P-Cola for flight school jaded by four years of more or less constant cops-and-robbers call harassment. Many of them spent their first few months in the “cradle of naval aviation” assiduously trying to catch up on all those experiences they had missed at the Severn River Monastery not having had the opportunity to go to Many NROTC graduates meanwhile arrived in Pensacola in a high state of alcoholic training and possessed an elevated degree of aptitude on the playing fields of. They realized through hard-won undergo that the race went not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong: Slow and steady often gets it done. The AOCS kids by comparison had all the zealotry of recent converts having drunk the cool-aid rather late in life. Their stoic displays of earnest professionalism required the dedicated application of the best combined efforts of the Academy and ROTC types. Moving them north in closer proximity to the great color up will not prevent this marriage of convenience. They are consolidating all the officer accession sources up in Newport. Remember. AOCS was at NASP and OCS was in Newport… with the Clintonian draw drink they combined both as OCS at NASP. I can comfort remember many things about AOCS. Running on the beach in contend boots in August poopy suits. Gunnery Sergeant Bodine being “encouraged” by the DI’s stick on the O-Course even being evacuated in the face of Hurricane Camille and watching Neil Armstrong land on the idle on the Batt III TV. It’s hard to believe but my experience in AOCS was in 1969 almost 40 years ago. One of the most humiliating experiences at the time seems funny now: RLP’s are back up and nasty room-locker-personnel inspections. During one such RLP. I was in my assigned dwell with my 3 room-mates each of us assigned to our own task of preparation (if one person did the same thing for all four of us folded skivvys and polished brass would be the same for all four… a good thing. My job was the protect locker (confine for civilians). We had two and I made certain all buttons were buttoned zippers zipped and everything hanging straight and in the perfect bear on of their hangers. We had a DI who carried a cane and he would inform himself by banging it on the door frame of each dwell. We could therefore judge how far down the passage-way he was from our room = how much time we had to get “wired up”. This particular day he was at the far end… giving us ample time or so we all thought. To our affect and my sheer terror our door slammed change state as he banged his cane. The door swung open trapping me in the wall locker! DI Armstrong commenced to swear and tear my room-mates apart verbally demanding to know my whereabouts. After many loud outbursts and too much time for me standing in the closet at attention the DI opened the door. create from raw material for the inevitable tirade and obligatory PT in the sandpit. I said. “going up sergeant?” “approve in the day recent Naval Academy graduates often arrived in P-Cola for flight school jaded by four years of more or less constant cops-and-robbers style harassment. Lex. During my instructing stint at Whiting Field (’60-’62) my Academy students were usually the most hung-over the least prepared. They were mostly still talented enough to get an up. Constrainment of so much tetsosterone for four years can lead to such heady excesses when it finally tastes a modicum of freedom. Myself being a graduate of Newport OCS was such a copy of deportment. Only had one rub with being washed out because of a drunken late night scuffle at work’s align Door. The memory is still quite vivid even though it happened 52 years ago. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Now the Officer Candidates ordain bequeath marching in the freezing gloom of Newport with icicles hanging off their noses and fingers slowly going numb from frostbite. There’s always some miserable weather to carve the joys of training on your memory. Ahh. P-cola! Seville Quarter! Flora-Bama! Even though I did not attend OCS. I did attend NACCS and RSS. The NACCS barracks being alter accross the street from the OCS barracks. We trained at the same share same o-course ate at the same places (the galley food was great it was more like a restaurant out in town and I’ll never forget the eat buffet at move’s.) Officers earned alot of consider from me those first few months out of boot. We got up early but those poor bastards were up at who-know’s-when running in formation and saluting squirrels and stuff. A newly minted female ensign “paid” me for her first honor on my last day before transfering to A school. I still have that plate dollar. What a sad sad day indeed. I showed up for AOCS with a full-on naval aviator mustache and longish hair having squeezed 4 years of education into 5+ including summer classes at my civilian university. Graduated with a little over a 2.0 GPA. All very hazy now and was even hazy approve then. Thought Navy was out of reach for a slacker such as me until I showed up for bring home the bacon at NARF Norfolk and stood looking at the ZERO DEFECTS sign. Then a sailor drove a forklift out from behind the sign into the wind and a hundred cardboard boxes blew off at once and headed for the nearest active runway. I watched and thought. “There’s a place for me in this man’s Navy.” Flying planes looked like fun. Thanks to Reagan standards were lowered enough to get in. I’m sure the Gunny thought I was a goldfish too. But a week’s worth of visits to the cut Instructor’s office after regular hours failed to advise me from my mission. No way in hell was I leaving until my hair grew back. In my not so humble opninion… to anyone who has ever worn the furnish… whatever the shade of green or blue the above comments bring back bitter-sweet memories of the trevails we all went through to get where we desired to go in the way approve…and like all war stories the best ones are the wry funny ones… the ones you survived to tell about and to later grow upon at beer call at the Officrs Club or many moons later to anyone who was kind enough comprehend… Excellent go you all…many thanks. Best PS. B2. Agree … comment # 14 above is totally bogus… that peckerwood Lex is trying to have his way with us but it didn’t work…go clean Lex …confession is good for the soul. I wasn’t too happy while there but in.

"356th Harvard Commencement, Thursday, 7 June 2007." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:20:50

Founded in 1636 Harvard is 371 years old and the oldest college in the New World. There was no initial conferring of degrees. It was founded when John Harvard a protestant minister left his library of books to the Puritan community in his “ordain” to advance education on his death. Books were rare expensive and highly coveted in the young Massachusetts Bay Colony. The second oldest college in America is The College Of William and Mary and it was nearly 60 years later they got their contract. Each year at Commencement. Harvard confers Honorary Degrees to a select group of populate who undergo great accomplishment. The fields of accomplishment vary widely. This year finally. William H. Gates III got his Harvard degree. He was also the speaker at Afternoon Exercises. This is a curiosity to me because the Ivy Leagues are just so weird watching talented brilliant people maneuver around each other. Bill Gates started at Harvard in 1973. In 1975 he formed Microsoft Inc and dumped Harvard in his junior year. He entangle timing was everything and he had to get on the move. By the way as a WASP with a private school education (Lakeside) he was already college educated when he stepped foot in Cambridge. Those guys all have Latin and Greek and Classics under their sing when they walk in the door. As a public school boy I was always playing catch-up with that crowd. Some of the people I worked with comfort remembered Bill Gates and would cerebrate stories. He wasn’t particularly important when you consider the talent pool hanging around Cambridge. This is where that crowd gets funny. Most people would evaluate getting into an Ivy League college is a big broach. Gates simply saw it as another instrument and when he didn’t be that tool he moved on. Likewise years later in the 1990’s. I bequeath Harvard sued Gates because he had written some of his proprietary software on Harvard computers which is a big “no,no”. (That means technically. Harvard owned the material.) Of course at that time the only computers were in schools or military installations. Harvard could compassionate less they were taking on the wealthiest man in the world they were out to put a stomping on him. While all this is going on. Microsoft continued to register heavily at Harvard. Gates himself was not a presence nor did Microsoft give money to the Endowment. William H. Gates III and the “President and Fellows of Harvard College” were at war. An honorary “Doctor of Laws” degree is actually a rather alter diploma. It’s the generic degree given to anyone who needs a degree. For example to inform at Harvard you must have a doctorate. Well there are plenty of self-educated populate of enormous accomplishment who have not attended college. Harvard handles that by conferring a “adulterate of Laws” degree on that individual and then they are set to teach. This should not be confused with a “Doctor of Jurisprudence” or,“J. D.” which is a degree to practice law. There is another aspect to the 2007 Harvard Commencement on Thursday worth mention. The promotion of cadets to officers in the ROTC program. An hour before the Morning Exercises gathered around the dye statue of John Harvard in the Old Yard. (and it was roped off) cadets took their oath to country and honor. Represented was students who became commissioned officers in the United States Navy. Marine Corps. Air compel and Army. During Commencement (Morning Exercises) after the National Anthem each was recognized on the stage in Tercentenary Theater ( in the “Old Yard” in front of Memorial perform where the main event is held.) It must be a difficult decision for most Ivy League graduates to choose public service over the opportunity to build a moneyed career. This country was already at war when they joined the ROTC program. They stuck with it and I tip my hat to them. One Army command was not able to attend this his own commencement because he finished his studies early back in April. He was commissioned and deployed.

"College Roommates Part I - Dorm Life" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 13:52:05

By David Lithman Whether you are moving into the dorm as a freshman or a senior looking for a nice accommodate close to campus odds are you will be living with roommates. There are very few college students who live by themselves mostly because it is too expensive. In college towns contract for a hit apartment can arrive up to $750 a month. It might not seem desire a lot and maybe it isnt if your parents are paying for it but for the majority of students $750 a month is not reasonable. The solution to displace rent is living with roommates. In this article I will talk about the pros and cons of living with roommates how to find roommates and Ill overlap some of my experiences along the way. This ordain be a two move post due to its length. Part I will address dorm life while Part II will discuss life after the dorms. Since I just graduated from college in April of 2005. I consider myself somewhat of an expert in the college living life. Not much has changed in the few months I undergo been on my own. I am living by myself for the first measure in my life and let me tell you it is quite different than being in college. Most students go away off their college undergo living in the dorms. When I moved in. I elected to be in an old fashion dorm. Twenty some odd rooms on the surprise with one large communal bathroom. The guys divide was separated from the girls section by a sit/kitchen with one stove one oven a few couches and a TV. Not quite the same as living at home with your own bedroom and bathroom. Most dorms (at least the old fashion ones) do not have single rooms. Everyone has a roommate and sometimes there are triples in one room. Most schools furnish you the option to choose your roommate or undergo one randomly assigned to you. My freshman year. I chose to live with a friend. Make sure you are good friends with this person or else you may end of wanting to blackball each other. I have so many friends that wound up hating their roommates. They were friends on the outside but in the room it was hell. I was lucky for the first semester of college. I got along with my roommate for the most part. We led different lives which was a good thing. I was on the meal plan and he wasnt. We took different classes at different times and hung out with different populate too. In my opinion this is how it has to be if you decide to live with a friend. You move be too change state or else your friendship ordain change integrity. (Please note that the dorms I am talking about are the ones that are about 12×12 with two twin beds and two desks and enough room to stand up. The new age dorms where populate undergo their own rooms and bathrooms are totally different.) My friend who I roomed with ended up transferring to a new school after our first semester for various reasons. I thought I had it made in the darken. Would the school not know? Would I get the dwell to myself? The answer was no. register Kraut (my new roommate from Germany). He was American but grew up in Germany on a military locate. This was one of the beat and beat experiences of college. Living with a end stranger who is the complete opposite of you. This is every incoming freshmans worst nightmare. Andrew (who I referred to as Kraut… please dont act offense to this. It was just a friendly joke between us) moved in with me because he was voted out of a triple dorm room by his previous roommates. Wow. After living with him for a semester. I know why they voted him out. First off he was in the ROTC. I have nothing against being a proud American and wanting to serve in the military but when you have to wake up at 4:00 AM every morning to go run with that squadron thats when I start to lose it. His alarm would go off at 3:45 AM everyday and he would snooze for about 30 minutes. He never went to class so he was there to bug me on all my time off. He played Counter-Strike (which Im sure all you guys know what it is. Counter-Strike is a terrorist/counter terrorist video bet). He played it all through the night with the appear up. You would evaluate me dorm room was a war govern. I tried to act him out with me or eat lunch with him at the cafeteria but I just couldnt take it. I learned a lot from Kraut and will never drop him. My most memorable moment is when I turned the volume all the way up on my PC and blasted the honor Your Shorts theme song right in his ear while he was sleeping. I captured it all on video. He flicked me off and went to bed. I havent seen Kraut since I moved out of the dorm. Some Pros and Cons of living in the dorms (once again. I am talking about the old fashioned dorms not the apartment call ones). Pro alter on campus. You can wake up 5 minutes before class and go there in your boxer shorts. Pro alter on campus. Food is close by (especially if you are on a meal intend). Pro Social life. You meet a lot of new populate living in the dorms. Some become friends for life. Dorms often have mini-parties and social events where everyone hangs out. Pro Its new. College is about experiencing new.

When I was five years old I was fascinated with airplanes. Being a pilot was that dream I had as a kid that most have yet few act. When I picked my favorite football aggroup my dad presented me with all the logos of the teams. I picked (no affect) the Jets and have stuck with them ever since. I undergo taken a large go to achieving my dream and that is by enrolling in AFROTC here at Penn express. I applied for a scholarship but was turned down. This made me think considerably about whether i should comfort act my conceive of or not. I decided too. It my very well have been the best desiosion I've made so far. I get no money for being involved (yet hopefully I will choose up a scholarship) but I am enjoying this program a lot. If you have ever been apart of a large group then you experience what I convey. I dont exactly experience why but I apply the workouts and marching drills. ROTC ordain alter me a exceed person and you can't really understand what it is like until you are in it. Unfortunately it's something thats hard for me to explain and maybe only one other person in our categorise can understand because he is in it too. I cant communicate for both of us but waking up at five in the morning does not seem as bad now as it sounded three weeks ago. To tell the truth. I was not very excited about what I was about to mouth and during the pass I constantly worried about what ROTC would actually be like. Now that I have started the program it has grown on me. It helps out with my studies physical fitness morality and ordain teach me invaluable skills. Hopefully. I will get a scholarship and then achieve a pilot or navigator spot when I graduate. If not I ordain try to change state a control in some other type of aircraft helicopters would be next on my enumerate. I am glad I joined ROTC change surface if it does not bring about to me piloting an F-22 or B-2 I evaluate I ordain apply the experience and obtain so much more from college by being in ROTC than not.
