"Here we are halfway through Nov. already. Things are moving fast ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:45:35

Here we are halfway through Nov already. Things are moving fast. Here is a brief report on our major planting projects. UCSD - One of the Top Campuses in the WorldOur first ever group at UC San Diego led by Brian and Cecilee Orme already has 30 students meeting and the Ormes haven't even moved to town full time. There have been at least two students who have made commitments to Christ incredible open air worship services and major answers to prayer for students who are sick. Pray for the Ormes to sell their house in this tough market so they can get on site in San Diego. UNLV - Difficult but Strategic Mission FieldWe have been trying to get on campus at UNLV for over twenty years. Our team facilitator. Joel Adams called me the first week in September to tell me simply. "We are official." Joel is our first ever hybrid campus worker. He will get half the funding needed for our chapter from Trinity Life Center and the other half by raising a missions budget from friends family and churches. This historic partnership between Chi Alpha and the local church could pave the way for many more campus plants. Pray for the leaders and 15 students who have signed on the dotted line to start this new outreach on campus. American River College and Sacramento City CollegeTwo thirds of all college students in California attend community colleges. Through our Future History Sacramento project we have been casting vision for leaders and prayer for the commuter campuses of Sacramento. By creating a successful model here we hope to duplicate groups on commuter campuses all over the west coast. An incredible young man. Danielle Rollinskendell has answered the call to start prayer meetings at ARC and SCC. For the past two months prayer has been going on campus. Twelve have committed to the noon time prayer gathering at ARC and 8 more are showing up for the SCC meeting. Pray for Danielle and all of these students at this highly unreached nexus of young adults. There's MoreBerkeley students are emailing me eager for Earl and Janet Creps to get on the ground there. This month they arranged housing in Berkeley and it looks like they will be on the ground soon. Pray!!! Also. San Jose students from Bethel Church are meeting for prayer for the first time ever at West Valley College. There are several other major campus plants in that works but they are just too young to mention right now. Pray for all of them and we'll keep you posted. Also pray for our family. Between all of this growth and the financial challenges of living on a missions budget in a downturned economy it has been a very fun but eventful season. As you pray ask God to give us faithful team members and favor on campus.

"The Ultimate Betrayal of California's Future" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:44:22

I will be on at 8 this morning to discuss this and other issues in California politics In 1960 the state of California made a promise. All students who met eligibility requirements would be given a place in the state's higher education system and that education would be provided free of charge (although students would be responsible for room and board and books they were not to be charged for the cost of instruction). Sure that place might be at a UC or a CSU but under Governor Pat Brown both Republicans and Democrats agreed that for the good of the state its economy and its future affordable higher education had to be guaranteed. That was the essence of the and it perhaps more than any other project of the Pat Brown era was responsible for catapulting California to global economic leadership creating broadly shared prosperity and making this state a better place to live. Without it we would be much worse off than we are today. The Master Plan has been betrayed before starting with Governor Ronald Reagan's 1967 student fee hikes. Over the decades the promise of free college has eroded but at least those who met the eligibility requirements could get a place. In recent years that opportunity became more remote and more dependent on debt but at least it was there. Under Arnold Schwarzenegger the slow but steady decline of California higher education. Arnold has shown nothing but contempt for higher ed and no interest whatsoever in upholding the promises of the Master Plan or securing a prosperous future for all Californians. So it comes as no surprise that he is again targeting higher ed for massive cuts and cuts that are leading the Cal State system for the first time ever: Under one of the cost-cutting proposals the CSU system may turn away eligible freshmen for the first time in its history. If the proposal from Chancellor Charles Reed is enacted schools will give priority to freshmen in their "service area," meaning CSUMB would first admit Monterey County residents. Students from outside the county would be put on a waiting list. Institutions of higher education statewide stand to face a staggering $464.1 million in combined cuts under the governor's plan to plug an $11 billion drop in state revenue projections. During a recession you want students to attend college. Regardless of age students get education and job training that will help them grow the economy upon graduation. It is a tried and true form of economic stimulus. Arnold's cuts are going to forestall this: The community college system which would be hardest hit by the cuts would lose about 10 percent of its state funding under the governor's plan.... "When unemployment goes up enrollment at community colleges goes up," Pyer said. "So we'll have more students and we won't get money for that." Tough economic times also force some four-year students to drop down to two-year institutions. Pyer said. The proposed budget cuts are not the only fiscal adjustment to education bouncing around Sacramento. The state Legislative Analyst's Office has proposed fee increases that would raise community college tuition by 50 percent by fall 2009... "It's the community college's feeling that it's the worst time to raise fees when the economy is in a slump," said Monterey Peninsula College spokesman Rich Montori. Disclosure: I teach part-time at MPC but do not anticipate being affected by any of these cuts. Community college cuts are especially pernicious. These schools are the primary location where working-class and lower middle-class Californians get a chance at upward mobility. Even small fee increases can put college and work skills further out of reach especially since most of these students already work full-time. As this budget crisis unfolds it is becoming clear to everyone that what is at stake is more than just a fiscal plan for the state government. Our very future is at risk here. I don't know how to put it more clearly. If these cuts continue if this overall situation is not reversed. California will simply not be sustainable for most of its residents. The prosperity of the 20th century will have given way to the aristocracy and inequality of the 21st. I teach in the CSU and things are really bad. They've been bad for a long time but they keep getting worse. I blame Arnold the State GOP and Reed (and Prop 13). Schools are turning to private money to fund new buildings and scholarships. It's all very shameful and it's not going to get better anytime soon. This is one reason why I loathe Prop 13--especially 2/3. I see the impact of it on the lives of my students the lives of my colleagues and me.

"One Sin of Commission and One of Omission" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 14:18:12

If anyone's confused whether there are evil populate in the world (my for example) be no advance than this. This is one of the : A day after a double homicide took the lives of a 7-month old baby and his young create detectives announced the unthinkable Saturday: the infant had not been accidentally caught in gunfire but was intentionally shot execution-style in his car seat. Seconds after shooting drink 21-year-old Sean Paul Aquitania during a suspected home-invasion robbery in southeast Sacramento County Friday afternoon two suspects fled the accommodate authorities believe. They stopped just desire enough at Aquitania's Chevrolet Malibu to fire a hit bullet into the head of the man's infant son. Sean Paul Jr. before disappearing. By Saturday the suspects had not been located. The second half of the story can be construe if you enter with the site but it's not necessary; it simply provides a little background on the surviving family members. Why in God's label would anyone kill an infant? He wasn't involved in the robbery/drug sale/altercation or whatever the case may undergo been. He was also too young to possibly serve as a witness or testify against anyone. A child that age is completely helpless and completely innocent which is what makes a crime desire this so much more abhorrent than your typical homicide. The father was also very strongly committed to his son; reports that he had the do by's transfer and footprint tattooed on his forearms. The only motive I could possibly think of is that the do by was either shot out of pure arouse against Mr. Aquitania or it was done for the turn thrill of it. This is an evil act and the men that committed it are evil. I would like to see anyone try to defend this act or describe it in any other way. There's also something else disturbing about this case. There is a huge gap in the Sacramento Bee's reporting. Here is their description of the suspects: -- one of whom reportedly was wearing a black hooded egest apparel the other a green shirt and a color Oakland A's hat. Authorities described one as an adult wearing a color hooded sweatshirt the other as an adult wearing a green shirt and a green Oakland A's hat. That's it. sight anything missing here? The description is of their clothes only. No have in mind of age gender height charge or - heaven command - go!Why is that? Some of that information is certainly available. On the (which came out more than a full day before the bind) they exposit one guess as a black male the other a Hispanic male. Granted in California that doesn't narrow the field very much but it is exceed than no description at all! Someone may come about to know a color and a Hispanic man who were out together that night and put two and two together from the other clues available. There are plenty of angry remarks about this omission in the newspaper's. I don't apply accusing the cover of pandering to political correctness but I can't see any other explanation here. If we were only talking about a misdemeanor that would be one thing. But when we are talking about two murderers on the let go with the public at large in danger it not only defies all common comprehend but it is essentially journalistic malpractice and a serious disrespect of their public trust to keep information desire this from the public. If you are as disturbed as I am you can let your feelings be known. The compose of the article is "Kim Minugh" and she can be reached at (916) 321-1038 or kminugh @ sacbee com. She appears to have a college web site with photos that she set up. I wrote her the following earn: To Kim Minugh,My label is John Rohan and I am the author of the "Shield of Achilles" web place. I also have previous undergo in law enforcement. I construe with interest your bind "Baby intentionally shot in continue" and "do by's killing shocks angers" about the tragic case of the father and do by Aquitania. I just undergo three questions that I would really appreciate if you could say for my readers:1) Why was so little information given about the description of the suspects? You only wrote that the suspects were wearing: "a black hooded sweat apparel the other a green apparel and a color Oakland A's hat". There was no have in mind of either gender or go even though the information was already available and change surface publicly posted on the Sacramento County Sheriff's web site more than a day earlier.2) Was this an accidental omission or is it a policy of the Sacramento Bee to not mention this information? If it is the Bee's policy can you gratify give the text of the policy or a link to it?3) Finally if it is the Sacramento Bee's policy to omit describing suspects by gender or go don't you evaluate this is hampering the efforts of citizens to aid in identifying suspects therefore putting the community at needless risk?convey you for your measure. I eagerly await your say. JR Hi John,Thank you for writing. There has been a great broach of discussion at our cover in regards to this story and this issue. However the decision not to inform on the suspects' go was not made by myself so I don't feel I can beat respond to your telecommunicate. gratify await an telecommunicate from an editor. Thanks very much,Kim So if the author didn't alter that decision that means that someone else likely an editor did. I have not received a response yet. However since I wrote this two other stories on the case were printed in The Sacramento Bee. One titled "" and another "". These articles are change surface worse; they are flat out wrong (I'll avoid the word "lying" for now) about the information offered by authorities: Authorities on Sunday would only channel minimal descriptions of the suspects offered by the home's residents: one was wearing a color hooded sweat apparel the other a green apparel and a color Oakland A's hat. That statement is simply not true as I showed previously. The Sheriff's department had that one was a black male and one a hispanic male. And what's really ironic is that they appeal for the public to help: [Sheriff's homicide Sgt] Wyant stressed that he's hoping anyone who has any information about the manifold homicide will come forward.... Anyone with information about the inspect can label sheriff's officials at (916) 874-5115. A lie of omission is still a lie. It's amazing irony how this bind speaks about the people at that house not being forthcoming with information that would back up identify the killers while this paper does the exact same thing. I'll let the editors grate on the ethics of their decision to back up these people go uncaught. If The Bee continues to leave out important information such as a person's race in a examine for suspects what other information can we assume they get out? What's the point of telling us what they were wearing? They can dress clothes easily but they can't change their whole physical appearance without a great deal of work. The author of the two more recent articles on the inspect was a Christina Jewett at cjewett @ sacbee com. Today I wrote her the following earn: To Christina Jewett,My label is John Rohan and I am the compose of the "Shield of Achilles" web site. I also undergo previous experience in law enforcement. I construe with arouse your bind "Slain dad's last-gasp fight" and "Mom. 19 grieves for infant son sweetheart" about the tragic case of the father and do by Aquitania. I just have a few questions that I would really appreciate if you could answer for my readers:1) Why did you obfuscate the information about the suspects? Was this deliberate or.
