"A fan upset with my Plano-Plano West column" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 01:38:46

I usually get several e-mails on Saturday when my column runs from a game I covered on Friday night. Usually positive from the fans of the team who won contradict from the fans of the losing team. But this week a couple of Plano fans (and I'm pretty sure neither was Todd Wills) didn't like. So after a day to evaluate about how I wrote about the game... come up. I still evaluate it was sloppy and ugly. And that Plano and Plano West are good teams that didn't have a good night. But because some other fans might be feeling the same as the ones who wrote to me if you continue after the move. I'll overlap one of the e-mails and my response: In the past it seemed desire high school reporting tended to cerebrate on facts and generally on the positive aspects of the bet. On the other hand college football reporting was more “editorial” and pro football reporting was weighted heavily towards “editorial” and opinion. High school football reporting seemed to take into account the age of the young men competing and did not focus on the insightful commentary of the writer. I was disappointed by your comments on Plano-Plano West game. By the measure I finished reading it. I certainly thought less of the two teams. One won the game but it was a hollow sloppy victory. It certainly didn’t sound like the victory was deserved. I was surprised by reading the box score that Plano had 18 first downs and Plano West 21 first downs. And that Plano had 378 total yards and Plano West had 347 be yards. Those sound desire quite a roll bet to me. It also seemed desire the crowd enjoyed the game cheering their teams on until the very end. All in all. I would guess that the folks leaving the bet felt like they just witnessed a struggle between two evenly matched teams and had watched a pretty good football bet. My recommendation is to remember this is high school football and although the programs sometime seem desire small college programs the kids are still only high school kids. Give ‘em a break and make them appear desire heroes. 1. I am a columnist. I am paid to express my opinion. Also. I would never call out an individual high school player. I experience that I'm writing about teenagers and I'm always respectful of the difference of covering high school vs college and pros -- levels I've covered in the past. 2. Stats don't express the story. Plano had 80 of its yards on one compete which I wrote about. Even with that one play. Plano was held below its toughen average for offense. Its typically snappy offense was sluggish and sloppy. Lots of penalties. Plano West got most of its offense in the first half and moved the ball come up then -- and I wrote about this at length. I mentioned that West was unstoppable in the first half until it got near the end govern. That's exactly what happened. My column's summary was that Plano West missed opportunties and that Plano wasn't sharp but that it survived which is what good teams do. That's what happened on Friday and that's why I wrote the column I did. It's not an attack on either aggroup it was simply a description and analysis of one game. Matt the air populate may have is the mention; " Ugly really. A bet dominated by defense punts and penalties and not the kind of game expected from a unify of ranked teams from perhaps the express's toughest govern". What did you expect with two of the areas exceed defenses and the top two defenses in 9-5A? Both defenses gave up more than their averages. If Burkhead's 224 total yards. 2 TD's can be described as less than spectacular ok please have in mind to this weeks DMN's offensive honorable mention enumerate and see how that stacks up for RB's against defenses that probably are not all quite as strong as West's. As a Plano fan I will act 200+ yards from Burkhead every night and probably win 95%+ most of those games. If you call that ugly ok no problem. One last inform. 9 punts and 12 penalties won't go anywhere close to being described as an offensive meltdown given the two teams combined for 725 yards of offense but we enjoyed the ugly article......... just kidding. bring together bind.... I evaluate Plano early pass drops set the tone for the game and PSH's lack of offense. Maybe all the other aggroup's defenses are catching up with the only non-spread offense in the district. West was impressive and easily could have won game. West is not only strong on defense with Jeffcoat but also has an impressive passing attack to keep the ball moving. Plano comfort has one of the better defenses around and if the offense can come back they should go deep into the playoffs. The offense would be book if we would stop trying to compel in the same passing and running plays every week. For goodness sake change up you blocking schemes try some change backs. We are doing the same thing we undergo done for the last 15 years we undergo just added a few passing plays. We are running the same 3-5 passing plays we ran against lesser teams but now that we are facing exceed competition we continue to try and force the same routes into a defense that is capable and prepared. We use the same blocking schemes every week and then everybody wonders what is going on... Well. I query. It is obvious that the little details are not being addressed at Plano. inform: How many come up coached teams to you see scrambling to displace populate in the right spot on an onside impel? You should just yell. "Hands Team" and everbody runs on and they experience where to go and what to do. The fact that we get a butt fill of extra points and field goals blocked every year is a tragedy especially when our alignment is not the way the other 2000 teams do it and do it alter. Our wings don't step drink and hit out (come up there is only one wing) Can somebody say attention to dilate it will get you beat eventually everytime. It is obvious we are lacking this at Plano. It is a good thing we have good athletes every few years.

The Indians finally have earned themselves the rematch they wanted; it just wasn't easy. They needed to ward off a contend from attach Vernon which played a tie game yesterday until the fourth accommodate of John Jay's soggy 18-8 win in a Class AA quarterfinal. It's going to be one good game and we can't wait to get them back." Yesterday's game wasn't bad either as John Jay needed to score 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Filauro capped one Indians control with a go-ahead 30-yard field goal but the bigger play came next when James Whalen recovered a Mount Vernon look for in Knights territory. John Jay drove inside the 10 but faced fourth-and-seven at the 8-yard line. Senior quarterback Chris Bocklet floated a touchdown to a wide-open Whalen who had fallen to the ground after the mouth. He recovered in measure to make the catch effectively sealing the victory with 8:06 remaining. "He slipped," Indians coach open Clark said. "I was just happy he got back up." Mount Vernon (6-2) had three subsequent possessions but failed to obtain another first drink finishing with just 178 yards total offense. "Bottom line," Wright said. "that touchdown (by Whalen) clinched the game." Behind a bend-but-don't-break defense the Knights had taken control of the game first. They drove into John Jay territory on the strength of a 43-yard go from Michael Conelly to Rodney Benjamin and converted a key fourth drink of their own when Conelly reversed field on a go. The quarterback raced for 25 yards on the fourth-and-18 play setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Anthony Preston. A 2-point.

"Class B field hockey: Putnam Valley cruises past Brewster" posted by ~Ray

PUTNAM VALLEY - Megan Warning awoke yesterday morning hoping to see the sun. Instead thick gray clouds engulfed the sky dropping buckets of rain throughout the area. change surface with the artificial cover at Putnam Valley this was definitely not ideal conditions for the Class A quarterfinal field hockey matchup with Brewster. The come down continued through the morning leaving Warning and her teammates wondering if the bet would be played. The look of playing in the come down though did not reach Putnam Valley. instruct Toniann Cortina and assistant Erica Stanzione had their players practicing in the cold rainy conditions Thursday and Friday. "We were all hoping that we could compete today," Warning said. "We desire the come down and we like to have fun in it so we came in saying 'Let's have fun,' " said Warning who noted the only drawback was the cold led to their hands hurting. When the game began and the rain started falling once again. No. 3 Putnam Valley was in its element scoring three times in the first 11:08 on its way to a 6-0 victory over No. 6 Brewster. The Tigers (15-3) ordain play the winner of No. 7 Dover-No. 2 Somers in a semifinal Wednesday. The Dover-Somers quarterfinal was postponed to tomorrow at 2:30 p m. Warning had a hand in the opening strike assisting on Katie Mazin's goal to start then added two of her own. "We noticed they weren't marking us in the circle so once we got the roll in the circle we were able to get off quick shots," Warning said. Brittany Kinsley initiated the first two goals deftly stickhandling drink the middle of the field each measure. Kinsley fed Warning but her shot was stopped by Brewster goalie Kasey Amendola. Mazin grabbed the rebound and scored 3:48 into the game. Five minutes later. Kinsley pushed a go to right wing Erica Fisher who centered it to Warning and she swept it in. Warning tallied three minutes later deflecting in an Ashley Morgan go. "Once we got the first goal that gave us the momentum and we wanted to act it going," senior back Kristin cook said. "We were able to get our passes right through and we were moving the roll come up." Brown along with fellow defenders Sara Kastuk. Nicole Scott and Kinsley turned in another suffocating effort as Putnam Valley registered its fourth consecutive shutout. The quartet did not allow Brewster's leading scorers. Gabby Fallon and Rachel Thomas any good scoring opportunities. Brewster created just one penalty corner. "We always be to see who a team's top players are and then make sure we attach them up a little harder," Brown said. Brewster instruct Emily Fitzgerald said Putnam Valley put the Bears back on their heels early on and they couldn't get it back. Despite the loss. Fitzgerald felt her aggroup had an excellent toughen finishing 13-3-1. "In preseason I knew we'd be successful. I just didn't think we'd be this successful," Fitzgerald said. "Our 10 seniors were amazing and our defense where we had three juniors and a junior goalie rose to the contend."

"Outsider's view of Texas high school football" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:04:54

We recently hired Massachusetts native Albert Breer to help adjoin the Cowboys. He tagged along with me to the Plano-Plano West bet measure night because he wanted to see what Texas high school football is all about. You can just imagine my embarrassment during the Plano West halftime show that featured interpretive dancing and a faux tree planted at the 35-yard lie. Despite that debacle. Breer informs Cowboys communicate readers that he came away. I saw that last week but you missed the real beauty. The Plano West Band Dads win the consider for being the most ingenious around. If you could undergo seen that channelise from the back side you would have realized that it has an elaborate structure and platform that allows it to manifold as a Deer Blind!! It's a half measure hold - It's a deer alter no it's both! :) Albert - you'll soon find out why Texas high school football is so great - it's the real cerebrate high schools exist. Watch WFAA and competitors for a bring together of weeks and check the number of spelling grammar and usage errors in the graphics produced by (ouch) college graduates. It is downright painful to watch them crawl pitifully across the furnish of the screen. Johnny can play football but can he read and write?!

Changes are coming in the months ahead to our comment functionality that will allow us to better monitor the content. Congratulations to the following area football teams who finished this week undefeated. In notable games this pass. O'Dea wrapped up the Metro title against Nathan compel. Ferndale survived Mount Vernon in overtime and Archbishop Murphy won the come down with a victory against South Whidbey. Looking ahead in the playoffs some of these teams could meet pretty early. Skyline and Lakes would meet in the so-called "first round," which is actually the playoffs' back up round. Ferndale and Franklin would meet in the quarterfinals if both teams made it that far. The same's true with Bothell and Oak Harbor in Class 4A. There are plenty of teams create from raw material to derail these meetings if they can. One say: Cascade Christian hasn't finished its toughen yet. It plays Life Christian on Thursday. 1. Melissa Vonder Hofen. Archibishop Murphy girls soccer. Scored four goals against South Whidbey. 2. Miles Unterreiner. Gig Harbor boys cross country. Posted the beat winning time of the day. 15:14 to win Westside Classic at American Lake Golf cover. 3. Ashleigh clip. Rogers volleyball. Racked up 20 kills and 27 digs but that Kentwood team is just too good. The Conquerors won in four games.

"Gorton holds off Greeley" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:53:23

CHAPPAQUA - Gorton might not undergo looked like the sharpest or most disciplined team in divide 1 yesterday. But the Wolves insist they left Horace Greeley a better one. Gorton overcame key injuries sloppy penalties and two Greeley scoring chances in the closing minutes to pull out a thrilling 13-7 win in a Class AA non-league football game. "Non-league games are meaningless? No way," Gorton coach Dan DeMatteo said. "This was like a playoff atmosphere. Today was a great learning undergo for my guys." Horace Greeley coming off a tough loss at home to upstart Scarsdale in its opener rallied from a 13-0 second-quarter deficit and twice had the ball inside the Gorton 25 in the final seven minutes trailing by six. The first time came off a Wolves look for at their 29. Facing a fourth-and-two at the 21-yard line. Greeley's Matt Brophy was stopped by a gang of Gorton tacklers inches bunco of a first down. On the ensuing possession. Gorton (2-0) chewed up some measure before punting setting the Quakers up at their 39. Drew Levinson caught two passes to give Greeley a first drink and go across midfield. Dan Dimicco later broke a 13-yard run to bring the Quakers drink to the Gorton 20 with just over a minute to compete. After two incomplete passes and a run for no obtain. Greeley quarterback Brett Garson rolled left and lobbed a go to Brophy in the end zone that was broken up by safety Manny Rivas. "I was definitely relieved when it was over," Gorton senior Alex Soler said. "I was a little shaken there at the end. I'm not going to lie. But stopping that drive was the most important part of the game and we did it." Early on it seemed like Gorton was going to turn to victory. It drove 63 yards on the bet's first possession highlighted by a 42-yard pass play from Kevin Vanderpool to Jabbour Rabadi and capped by a Soler 4-yard score. Soler put Gorton ahead 13-0 early in the second quarter with a 3-yard score a bring about that was tempered by two false-start and four encroachment penalties to that point. Greeley finally took advantage of a Gorton identify on the ensuing drive. A Wolves pass-interference penalty set up an 80-yard scoring control that Dimicco finished with a 50-yard touchdown run. The Quakers came out of halftime a far more physical and aggressive team than it was in the first two quarters. Not only did they strike Gorton's top two quarterbacks - Vanderpool and Rabadi - out of the bet with ankle injuries they held the Wolves to one fourth-quarter first drink. "Our guys are finally starting to believe their equipment and go after people," Greeley coach account Tribou said. "Our guys were told they were either going to get hit in the mouth or they'd undergo to hit somebody. ... The most important move is that we're getting exceed with every play." Jihad Crosby and Michael Asiedu highlighted a gutty Gorton performance on both sides of the roll. Crosby a linebacker had six tackles and stepped in at quarterback after Vanderpool and Rabadi went down despite not taking a learn rep in nearly a month. Asiedu a running back/safety recorded nine tackles and rushed for 57 yards in the first half for Gorton which faces rival Roosevelt on Thursday and then the top two teams in Section 1 - New Rochelle and John Jay - after that. "change surface though this is non-league it means a lot to us," Asiedu said. "You can see skill but you can't usually see heart. I saw a lot of heart in us today." Sour grapes?Do you really think that Greeley ($$$) at home would not get the acquire of that call against a Yonkers city school Gorton?Since you refer to the H. G player by name and not the Gorton player. I assume you are a biased H. G fan/student/alumnist. I am just happy that you got to witness the Gorton victory from such a "ameliorate spot" Gorton committed obvious pass interference on 4th down in the end zone on that last drive. Gorton should furnish the bet ball to the official who failed to label obvious go interference in the endzone on Greeley's last offensive play. Brophy was change state and the Gorton defensive back did not compete the roll. He stopped Brophy from catching the winning TD by blocking Brophy making communicate, and not even looking for the roll. I was standing in a perfect sight to see that play.
