"What is a CLP?: 2nd Best Pastor or Extraordinary Elder?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:52:26

Lee Hinson-Hasty is coordinator for of the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.). Through his work Lee hopes to capture and share of theological education of church leadership and of vocational discernment as he sees through the eyes of some exciting Presbyterians in and related to seminaries. How should the PC(USA) understand the identity of the (CLP)?  Neither ecclesiastically nor practically speaking has this fundamental issue been settled.  Barbara Wheeler. President of and the Director of its’ raises this question in some of her concluding remarks to a two-part study jointly commissioned by the PC(USA)’s and its’ . Among the numerous findings the studies highlight the appreciation of presbyteries for the partnerships with seminaries to provide instruction for their programs.  The s online program is used by many.  More surprising was the similarity of the curriculum structures for the programs.  Almost all provide courses in the eight areas named in the : Old Testament. New Testament. Reformed Theology (and Sacraments). Polity. Preaching. Christian Education. Worship (and Sacraments) and Pastoral Care (and professional ethics.)  Of concern was the finding that most programs require somewhere between 120-135 contact hours of instruction in total at a college level.  This is the equivalent of about three undergraduate level courses or about three-quarters of a semester course load. CLP’s are serving the church more and more in ways that are often appreciated by presbyteries.  As many as 70% are serving congregations that currently are unable to afford a seminary trained pastor.  10% are serving racial/ethnic congregations.  10% are also serving in Associate Pastor-type positions not role imagined when this idea was conceived.  These studies has been forwarded to presbyteries and seminaries for further reflection and use and utilized at a recent CLP Conference at that was jointly sponsored by   They hopefully can be used to strengthen programs and highlight what is being done well. There is much more to consider in these studies that I have not highlighted.  Reading these well written and research studies would be worth the time of any church officer and every presbyter.  In fact the Committee on Theological Education has voted to recommend that these studies be more widely distributed studied by the and and that further study be done. I wonder what you think.  How are CLP’s being used in your experience?  Maybe you are a CLP how do you identify yourself?  Your comments are welcome just click "comments" below and share your thoughts!

"?Students Flock to Seminaries, but Fewer See Pulpit in Their Future?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:52:00

authorise file this under “things that help me feel exceed about the twists and turns in my life.” Last Spring. Neela Banerjee at the New York Times wrote about the change magnitude in the number of people attending seminary and the decrease in the number heading to any parish ministry or leadership (). Yay. I’m not alone! I had heard something similar while I was at Fuller Seminary in the 90s. A prof mentioned that only 40% or 60% (I can’t remember which it was) of Fuller grads were going into pastoral ministry. And since then I’ve realized I’m not the only M. Div floating around doing non-church bring home the bacon change surface in a small area like Yakima. When I applied for a training & development job here approve in ‘02 or ‘03 — it was at one of those job bring together things — I happened to see a pile of other applications and saw another one listing an “M. Div.” I don’t evaluate either of us got the job. Banerjee’s bind doesn’t get into why this is happening. I evaluate it’s mainly economic: church jobs don’t pay well for one and for two it can be hard to sight a full-time church job. The mainline denominations undergo more clergy than they do full-time positions. Many pastors are co-vocational out of necessity therefore. And it’s also the realization that life doesn’t have to be so categorized into sacred / secular that one’s “calling” and one’s work can move and create by mental act over a lifetime (less emphasis on one particular career one particular “calling”). As for why more students are drawn to seminary all I can say is that when I began my studies at Fuller when people asked me what I wanted to do with my degree. I said. “I’m not sure. I’m here mainly because I crave this stuff.” It was not a practical or economic strategy on my part. I just wanted to learn and chew over. I wanted to immerse myself in theological thinking and feeling. I wanted to change and see where it took me. Turns out. I think almost ten years later that though I may undergo more passion for theology. I have more insight and more to offer in teaching writing and working with students as they mouth to mold their ways of thinking and responding to others and themselves. And change surface more important (at least for me) is that I evaluate I ordain have more impact with beginning writer/thinkers than with theology students. "State can't regulate seminaries, high court says" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:23:42

In 1998 the come in ordered Tyndale Theological Seminary in assemble Worth to quit issuing degrees and forbid calling itself a seminary because it had not been accredited by the state nor had its curriculum and professors approved. Two other schools the Southern Bible Institute in Dallas and the Hispanic Bible Institute in San Antonio later joined a lawsuit brought by Tyndale. "Since the government cannot cause what a perform should be it cannot cause the qualifications a cleric should undergo or whether a particular person has them. Likewise the government cannot set standards for religious education or training," he wrote. The act said these schools can operate as they see fit. Hats off to separation of church and state. But what's to stop an unscrupulous or incompetent administration from taking your money teaching you next to nothing and handing you a worthless degree as you're shoved out the door to alter room for the next fresh mark? What's to stop ministers "trained" at such institutions from using their worthless degrees to increase their credentials as they in turn find and exploit their own marks? Unless one wants to alter the argument that any moron regardless of formal training is qualified to be a theologian -- you know if a perform somewhere says it's theology then by God it's theology and who is the state to say otherwise? -- does it alter some sense to apply some measurable standards to schools before they're allowed to certify people as qualified graduates? One thing prospective students can/should do is affirm the accreditation of the school. If they are not accredited by a "legitimate" accrediting agency then the student should not consider attending that particular school. As to who is a legitimate accrediting agency the US Department of Education (USDE) exercises a recognition answer for higher educational accrediting agencies. The recognition affect involves rigorous documentation of compliance with legal and regulatory requirements on-site inspections and/or observation of accreditation processes and a public hearing conducted by a national citizens review adorn. USDE recognition may be granted for up to five years at a time; it must be renewed upon expiration. Two such accrediting agencies are. 1) for bible schools only. The Association of Biblical Higher Education http://www abhe org/index html and 2) for public and private schools secular and bible there is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools http://www sacs org/. In the case of the latter they don't cause "theology" but they do determine whether or not a given bible college or seminary is meeting rigorous standards in teaching and testing to verify mastery of the material. Also included is an evaluation of the teachers credentials and qualifications in given affect areas etc... No the state shouldn't interfere in bible colleges and seminaries but said institutions should have legidimate USDE certified accrediting agencies come in and affirm and certify that they are educating their students in an acceptable manner. Prospective students (and their parents) should think desire and hard before considering an institution that doesn't subject themselves to rigourous review by a legitimate accrediting agency. I'm not al all sure that I be politicians deciding what religious institutions are acceptable and which are unacceptable--except when it go to their abiding by the fundamental civil alter of all peoples. Why don't these seminarians just send in for a mail-order (or e-mail request) degree like their predecessors? Or are these alleged seminaries that sort of degree mills too? Maybe I should analyse into this running a "seminary" cram advance. It could be a good source of unearned income to add my social security analyse. Maybe I could find a lie man (surely not a woman!) with good hair smile. & soothing voice and also a good PR firm--cutting them both in for a percentage of the "take". I query if there are any real requirement for setting this up as a 501(c)(3) organization. Probably not in view of all the Religious alter organizations flying under that banner with their beat throtle politicizing. I evaluate the Texas Supreme act got this one right. What exactly would be the requirements? They would differ so widely from denomination to denomination (or non-denomination) that it would either be useless or needlessly intrusive. As a have of Dallas Theological Seminary. I did analyse the educate I attended. I rejected many possible seminaries because I did not believe their education adequate. The measure thing I would be is for the government to get involved. There are already independent accreditations that can be obtained if a educate wants to be taken seriously by most churches or religious non-profits. I agree completely with Natalie at least so far as the responsibility to choose with discernment and compassionate. The seminary I chose to attend does not have a doctrinal statement because it views.

"Theology in the News: From the Seminaries to the Pews" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 13:54:31

Seminary is not reality. That much became obvious to me the moment I met my classmates and began looking over syllabi for classes on Greek. Hebrew missions and biblical theology. No congregational ministry can bend the time seminary affords for intense focus on technical but important matters of theology. Professors fling around fascinating innovations and insights. Students though often downtrodden by the gravity and complexity of their tasks suddenly shine as they behold great truths about God. The average churchgoer ordain never undergo the time or inclination to focus on theology. change surface in our most rigorous churches the cares of this world interfere. Perhaps an be with a seminary graduate has convinced them that theology belongs to arrogant eggheads. As a result what seems so important in seminary produces blank stares in the pews. For evangelicals—Christians committed to a high view of Scripture—this is a discouraging scenario. More than that it's dangerous. Christian colleges and seminaries can grow detached from the churches they serve. Hazardous ideas can dribble for decades without so much as a nod from most churchgoers. And parents query why their undergraduate daughter or seminary son graduates with odd ideas about everything. So they blame the theologians and the make pass continues. But what if they knew more about current debates? What if someone could direct them toward resources that would help them evaluate theologically about current events? I hope that in some small way this column might back up those of you who want to care about theology but lack the measure to skim blogs. Maybe you'd consider attending a conference if you only knew when or where to go. You might change surface construe the occasional book if someone explained why it's important. As I draw on the help of scholars and friends. I hope this column will become a destination for you to surprise what you might have missed in the last two weeks and discern what you otherwise might not have foreseen. Not-So-New Perspective The "new perspective on Paul" is nothing new. But it has the feel of a hot topic these days. That should be no surprise as the new perspective touches on justification the crux of the Reformation and a key to the Protestant view of salvation. New Testament scholar Simon Gathercole introduced and critiqued the new perspective in a for Christianity Today. He offers this brief definition: "In particular the new perspective investigates the problem Paul has with 'works' or 'works of the law.'" If by "works" the apostle Paul meant something other than moral behavior then have Protestants promoted a false dichotomy between faith and works? Could Martin Luther's critique of the Roman Catholic Church undergo clouded and confused how Protestants construe the New Testament? Gathercole's will help you end for yourself if this new perspective deserves such attention. If the books intimidate you prolific blogger and New Testament scholar Scot McKnight ordain take you on a. As always. McKnight's Jesus Creed site includes vigorous debate in the comments section. A study committee for the Presbyterian Church in American recently and open it to be inconsistent with the Reformed creeds. The study assort had its overlap of who considered its outcome predetermined due to the committee selection affect. As if the great justification debate hasn't attracted enough attention evaluate John Piper's critique of N. T. Wright to cover new ground. Scheduled for release in late October. should be most beneficial because Wright construe the manuscript and responded to Piper. According to Piper the interaction with Wright doubled the book's length. label recognition alone should guarantee widespread interest in Piper's evaluate. Scholar-pastor Wright and pastor-scholar Piper have popularized theology among many young evangelicals. Indeed the book's singular cerebrate on Wright testifies to the affect of the Anglican bishop of Durham. And because Piper considers the consider to be of crucial importance so ordain many of his followers. How ordain the contours change now that the debate has broken out of the seminaries and into the churches? Here's what I sight odd about the current swell of interest in the new perspective. You won't comprehend the same concern from leading evangelical scholars in seminaries and colleges. Those who endorse the new perspective consider these insights to be assumed for biblical studies seem rather satisfied with the of that have taken the new perspective to assign. They have moved on to the next big thing whatever that might be. I suspect they will be to re-engage now that the debate has finally escaped their domain.
