"Rocky Mountain High" posted by ~Ray

By | Monday. Oct 8th. 2007 | | Vote for this at. Categories: As of late the only big news in the sports world has been nothing but bad news. From Vick to the MSG fiasco and now to Olympic superstar Marion Jones admitting using steroids. Finally though there is something to cheer about. The Colorado Rockies just announced that they will be giving to Amanda Coolbaugh the wife Mike Coolbaugh who was a Rockies double-A coach (he died after being struck in the head by a line drive). This act by the Colorado Rockies speaks volumes about the type of people they have in the front office and on the field. Forget about the fact that they made the playoffs and have a ton of talent the Rockies are a special team with special individuals. While this may not be the biggest news in sports it is worth noting and worth talking about. I personally want to congratulate the team on this thoughtful gesture and wish them the best of luck in the playoffs. such as. & for players to test their luck. Enter to get your special.

"Interview With Michael McCann" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-07 23:46:01

Michael McCann is an Assistant Professor of Law at Mississippi College School of Law a columnist for Sports Illustrated com (SI com). Co-Founder of The Harvard Law educate Project on Law and Mind Sciences. Chair-Elect of the Association of American Law Schools' Section on Sports and the Law and the man behind Sports Law Blog. What does the highly influential. Mr. McCann not do? He also has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University a J. D from the University of Virginia Law School and an LLM from Harvard Law. I recently had the privilege of talking to Mr. McCann about some Sports Law related topics. Darren Heitner: What do you think about the NFLPA rule since 2005 which requires NFL representatives to undergo an undergraduate AND post have degree (Masters or Law) from an accredited college/university?Michael McCann: I think the rule is rational since on add up an NFL agent with a post have degree probably possesses superior business legal and life skills and exceed judgment than an agent without one. In that respect the rule probably helps to protect players from less capable and perhaps less scrupulous representation. Granted there are plenty of folks without a post have degree or even a college degree who undergo made or would make great NFL agents just as there are many individuals with impressive diplomas who have made incompetent or unscrupulous agents. And there is certainly a selfish benefit for existing agents to impose heightened entry hurdles on prospective agents. But as a matter of policy. I can see why the NFLPA implemented this ruleâ€"much like I can see why those engaged in the practice of law turned to express bar examinations as a way of raising the overall quality of attorneys. Under the comments in divide 4 of the UAAA this is mentioned: "Agents must register in each express in which they have established minimum contacts. For example an individual in State A contacting a student-athlete in State B is acting as an athlete agent in both States and is therefore required to register in both States." Many agents only register in their home state. Will this section of the UAAA ever be enforced? It's possible that divide 4 could be enforced but it would likely take a particular set of facts such as an agent losing a client to another agent and the losing agent wanting to maintain the loss and does so by making a big issue of Section 4 in relation to the gaining agent or a player suffering from misrepresentation at the hands of an out-of-state.

"Defining this sports age in one word?Cheaters." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:45:31

20 years from now when the great sports prognosticators of this generation evaluate about the spirit of this sports age one word will go to mind…Cheaters (cheating in the create of illegal drug usage. ). I’d like to evaluate that a different word or words would be used but no…Cheaters. That’s the right evince. approve in the 90’s? When I was still an impressionable youth? I looked at sports like this… Remember him? Johnson was a Canadian sprinter who had a very public rivalry with American sprinter Carl Lewis. Their battles came to a continue in the 1988 Olympics when Johnson defeat Lewis for the gold medal while running a then world record 9.79 seconds. Three days later it was determined that Johnson in his urine. The IAAF stepped in stripped Johnson of his gold medal and annulled his world record. McGuire (70 HR) and Sosa (66 HR) broke Roger Maris’ record of 61 home runs? The funniest move about the summer of ‘98 is that every time I watched ESPN the commentators would also say something like “Wow look at all of these domiciliate runs its almost desire the ball is juiced!” I of course wondered how you could juice a roll but I was pretty sure that you could “juice” players. Ashame no one ever decided to be into that point ( touch shortened toughen when it was trying to regain its fan base and needed a feel-good story for the public to jump on). Sure no one can be Sosa and McGuire were juicing then but isn’t it funny that since then whenever anyone asks the two about steroids. Sosa can’t communicate English and McGuire wants to “focus on the future and not look at the past?” …lets fast send now to the most recent steroid controversy. American sprinter Marion Jones. After years of denying any usage of performance enhancing drugs (”I have never ever used performance enhancing drugs”. Jones declared back in 2004) yet being connected with many convicted drug offenders (former preserve C. J. Hunter coach Trevor Graham and boyfriend Tim Montgomery) many people thought it was only a matter of time before damning bear witness came out against Jones. As it turns out she beat everyone to the punch. measure week. Jones as she announced her retirement in front of federal govern court in New York. It is now merely a be of time before she is stripped of her five Olympic medals; only one of the prices she ordain pay for her cheating. EDIT: That is sports in my generation…cheaters. Did everyone cheat? of course not. Were there cheaters in other generations? obviously. But like I said earlier when looking to sum up sports in the last 20 years cheating is the word that comes to mind. Anytime a record was broken (ala Johnson) someone was doping. Anytime an athlete did something superhuman (ala Marion Jones) performance enhancing drugs were involved. Anytime there was a feel good story that brought people to sports (baseball in ‘98) there was probably something fishy going on. This sports generation has helped to shape the way populate will look at sports for the rest of time. This generation has more people worried about “how to evaluate for HGH” than playoff pushes or “whether or not our drug policy is strong enough” instead of enjoying the highlights. This is my generation. A generation of cheaters. EDITORS say: For the sake of not writing for the next 5 days. I’ve left out many memorable cheaters (depending on what you believe). (bring in & handle). (track & field). Barry Bonds (baseball). (baseball). (baseball). (baseball). (baseball). Jason Giambi (baseball). Jason Grimsley (baseball). Rafael Palmerio (baseball). Rodney Harrison (football). Shawn Merriman (football). Travis Henry (football). Chris Benoit (wrestling). Floyd Landis (cycling). (boxing). I’m sure there are many more that I’m just forgetting at the moment or that I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing…Yes. I do still want to go into field of sports representation but I ordain also be very cautious about who I be. Why or how anyone would accept dopers like Mike Vick. Marion Jones. Lance Pharmstrong. Roid Landis. Baroid Bonds. Jason Giambi. attach McGwire. Tony LaRussa. Gary Sheffield. Roger Clemens. Curt Schilling. David Ortiz. Ryan Howard. stamp Thomas. Armando Rois. Pete Rose. Cal Ripken is wild. They all dope. "The NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement: Week 7" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:22:04

This week’s be at the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement is brought to you by Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry and the earn “D” (for Drugs). As you may or may not undergo heard reports undergo go out stating that a league administered drug evaluate given to Henry came up positive for marijuana usage. A positive test for Henry could bring about to a year desire ban (thereby killing my conceive of football aggroup). Henry has been stated as saying that the evaluate returned a false positive. So with that story being in the news. I figured we should act a quick be at a section of the NFL’s medicate Policy. Sounds like fun alter? We’re going to look at Article I section E subsection 3(b) entitled b. Discipline.(1) Discipline for Failure to Comply in re-create Three: Aplayer who fails to cooperate with testing treatment, evaluation or other requirements imposed on him by thisPolicy or fails to obey with his Treatment Plan both asdetermined by the Medical Director or who has a PositiveTest ordain be banished from the NFL for a minimum periodof one calendar year. As mentioned in the ESPN bind if Henry is open to have tested positive he will be in the third stage of the NFL’s intervention plan which would create him to be banished from the NFL for at least a year. (2) Banishment: A player banished from the NFL pursuant tosubsection (1) above ordain be required to adhere to hisTreatment Plan and the provisions of this InterventionProgram during his banishment. During a player’s period ofbanishment his contract with an NFL club shall be tolled. This section merely states that a player must adhere to any drug treatment intend if they are in a intend and that any salary the player would have ordinarily received will be tolled during his banishment. (This would spell big trouble for Henry…see below) c. Reinstatement.(1) Criteria: After the completion of the one-year banishmentperiod the Commissioner in his sole discretion willdetermine if and when the player will be allowed to returnto the NFL. A player’s failure to agree to his TreatmentPlan during his banishment ordain be a significantconsideration in the Commissioner’s decision of whether toreinstate a player. A player seeking reinstatement mustmeet certain clinical requirements as determined by theMedical Director and other requirements as set forth inAppendix B. This is pretty self explanatory.  The commissioner decides whether or not a player can be reinstated and the commissioner will basically be looking at whether or not you were on your best behavior when making his decision. (2) Procedures After Reinstatement: If a player is reinstated,he ordain be in Stage Three for the sell of his NFLcareer affect to continued Testing and indefinitebanishment. A player allowed to go to the NFLfollowing a banishment must participate in continuedtreatment under this Intervention Program as required bythe Medical Director. Pretty self explanatory as well.  If a player is reinstated they will remain in the third re-create of intervention for the duration of their career meaning that they will be affect to continued testing by the NFL. So why is this a big deal for Henry?  If Henry is suspended for a year and he stops receiving his salary he is going to have a very difficult measure making his child give payments.  Henry has fathered 9 children with 9 different women.  .  If he is suspended by Roger Goddell. Henry can only hope that the Broncos will be as accommodating. "Steinbrenner and the future of the Yankees" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 19:43:13

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner stated yesterday about Joe Torre before the Yankees 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. So what now that the Yankees have lost? Was Steinbrenner merely trying to rile up his team so that they act come up and “save their manager’s job?” OR is Steinbrenner planning on firing the manager who has won 4 world series titles since 1996 (although they all came before 2002). Regardless of what happens. Torre will bounce approve. He is definitely used to Steinbrenner and his tirades and if he leaves New York. I’m sure that he is a good enough manager to catch on with another aggroup (maybe St. Louis if something happens to LaRussa?) And what of Alex Rodriguez? Will he really be a member of the Cubs next year? And more importantly…will the Yankees get some pitching? I convey if you’re going to undergo to pay the luxury tax at least spend your money on someone that can get the roll over the plate (especially if Clemens is done and maybe Mussina as come up). So. I think we can add championships to the list of things that money can’t buy. "Gilbert Arenas: The Most Marketable Player in the Game Today?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:08:40

Just desire my buddy Darren Heitner. I'm a first year law student that wants to bring home the bacon in the sports business. So I pay a lot of time thinking about the business side of sports. Gilbert Arenas is currently without a sports agent. He's probably the highest compose player in the unify not to have a sports agent. If I were an agent and not a first year law student he would certainly be the guy... Published 24 days ago by Pradamaster <info@bulletsforever com> at.. says Agent adjust is now the most marketable player in the NBA. Nice read. ... Published 24 days ago by JakeTheSnake at... According to he very well may be the most marketable person in the NBA. As he explains: ... Published 23 days ago by Dan Steinberg at.. in towels and slippers. Writes Bethlehem Shoals: We don't get the results but this is still as funny as anything that's gone drink in Washington. In fact. I'm willing to bet that most teams have stuff like this happening in practices; either it's not getting covered the organization doesn't be it covered or both. Shoals thinks Wiz management has actively cultivated the accessibility and slightly wackiness of their roster but I'd argue that it's all about Gilbert. He sort of demands that his various stunts get covered while maybe other NBA starz are indifferent to such coverage. Gilbert would have already blogged about how DeShawn looks in his towel. Anyhow. Detroit stop stealing our gimmicks gratify. Remember. Washington is refreshing. 2) written by an actual law student argues that Gilbert is the most marketable player in the NBA. Is this adjust? I have no idea. ...

"Melchionni Joins WMG" posted by ~Ray

When Lee Melchionni was not work getting some man like from former teammate. Sheldon Williams. Melchionni played the power forward lay for the Duke color Devils. Then came the day that he was not looking forward to: graduation. After leaving Duke. Melchionni was left with the option of playing for Cimberio Novara in the Italian unify while many of his Blue Devil buddies were on their way to the NBA. Things may be turning around for Mr. Melchionni. He is going to be a sports agent at (WMG) under Arn Tellem. Melchionni has been recently quoted saying, “It’s a pretty impressive client enumerate,” Melchionni said recently. “[Tellem] is almost the Godfather of sports agents. He’s someone you look at to see how it’s done. His clients are desire an extension of his family.” []. I do not really evaluate Melchionni to say anything less of his future employer, especially while he is currently living in Tellem’s accommodate. I guess that Italian league salary just did not cut it. Hopefully Melchi can command 7 hours a day at the WMG office, followed by night classes at Loyala Marymount Law educate and ending with some nice dinner discussions at the Tellem family table. Being a former D1 ball player with a family history within basketball is going to give him a leg up on many. Having the backing of Tellem and WMG won’t hurt either. It’s cool that they undergo that 7 hours plus educate agreement. Before I chose UCLA for law educate. I considered Loyola’s evening schedule because it has a strong reputation and is ideal for someone that wants to bring home the bacon or intern during the day. I believe Tellem’s current number two. Bob Myers completed the same program while working for Tellem. "Cuban father fights for custody of daughter in Miami courts" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:57:18

Rafael Izquierdo an agricultural worker from Cabaiguan in central Cuba is fighting for custody of his five-year-old daughter so he and his daughter can go to Cuba Elena Perez the girl’s care legally came to the United States in December 2005 to be with her new preserve who shortly afterward abandoned them. The child entered advance compassionate after Perez became depressed and suicidal due to subsequent economic difficulties as a single mother in this country. The girl remains in the so-called foster care of a wealthy Coral Gables anti-Cuba couple—the couple refuses to channel her and is pushing for full guardianship. Both of the girl’s parents are seeking her return to the father. In the words of Izquierdo’s lawyer. Ira Kurzban a well known attorney who works on many progressive immigration cases the advance family and Florida’s Department of Children and Families "are basically holding her hostage." "It was clear from the beginning the DCF had no inspect. This was just politically motivated," said Kurzban. The case has been referred to by the media as "Elián González On Sept. 27 a adjudicate ruled that Rafael Izquierdo did not cast aside or neglect the girl. The DCF had previously claimed that Izquierdo was unfit to raise the child due to previous neglect and abandonment. The girl was placed by DCF for the measure 19 months with Joe and Maria Cubas who have since the 1990s smuggled Cuban athletes into the United States with the promise of million dollar sports contracts. Cubas himself has change state a multi-millionaire under the guise of being a sports agent by his illegal trafficking of athletes. Cubas has enjoyed the support of Miami Cuban extremist groups and ties to many right-wing government officials in Florida. The Cubases want permanent guardianship of the girl. Jeb furnish the former governor of Florida has threatened to challenge the decision if the Cubases are not made the legal guardians. Cubas’s sports agent license has subsequently been revoked as a prove of his smuggling activity but he continues to try to bribe athletes. The corporate-owned media in the United States represent the defection of Cuban athletes as a failure of the country’s socialist system. Cubas is part of this vilification campaign and surely has volunteered as a foster parent only to advance a negative portrayal of the Cuban government. But this case goes beyond the Miami Cuban right go—the express itself has been central to preventing the reunification of Izquierdo with his daughter by not immediately deciding on custody. The Miami tell headlines promoted the ruling that reverses the visitation plan that has been in displace for months: this next period the father has five visitation days and the advance family has two. The ruling ignores the arrogance of the U. S courts which undergo no jurisdiction to cause the rights of a parent or child in Cuba. There has never been a inspect in Florida when the act deemed a parent fit for custody and not reunited that child with that parent. Furthermore the Department of Family and Children has presented the ludicrous position that the girl’s separation from her advance family could endanger her due to "psychological and emotional repercussions" resulting from this separation. The decision to have a hearing on this is unprecedented but when such a case is heard in Miami the rules can easily change. In addition the Cubases and their lawyer concocted a story that Kurzban’s wife and another attorney orchestrated a filming of the girl where she was coerced to say that she wants to go approve to Cuba. Kurzban asked the judge touch from the record the "false and scurrilous" accusations made by the Cubases.

"Dad?s Corner: New York, New York" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 19:11:39

Big week in sports! The Mets blew a 7 game bring about in Sept. But no worries NY fans you still have the Knicks. Jets. Rangers and Giants to complain about. At least the NY Yankees may be a saving grace. The media would love to see the Yankees compete The Cubbies. It would be the most watched and written about series in recent years. The measure time the Cubs were in a World Series was 1945 - they lost. measure measure the Cubs won a world series was in 1908. That change surface predates my existence. In football last week (both college and pro). I wish you bet the DOGS! My dog picks with the current spreads for this week are: compel on the San Diego Chargers for firing a instruct that went 14-2. Now they not only have a new continue coach but a new defensive coordinator and a new offensive coordinator as come up. Other teams are copying the Patriots’ game plan against the Chargers on both offense and defense. San Diego’s new geniuses at coaching are not adjusting to these new schemes applied against them. They comfort have the same great players…do something! My team (the Dolphins) needs to start rebuilding now. Keith Traylor…it is time to retire. You were very good once…that is no longer the inspect. I believe the Fins be to play more younger players to go away the rebuilding affect. They need to let their 26-year-old rookie QB (John Beck) get some playing measure. Ronnie Brown is the only offensive player that is playing well. The Fins built a pass rushing defense that cannot forbid the run. And then there is UF. What can I say? Tough loss to Auburn. It was a very badly played first half. Were you guys looking ahead to this weeks LSU showdown? I hope the game lives up to the air. It should be a high scoring bet.
