While defensive coordinator Wally Burnham was generally pleased with his side of the ball after Saturday's intrasquad practice offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said he didn't see many things to be pleased with on offense leaving many starting positions still up for grabs with two weeks until the toughen opener.
"Based on that performance it's very much up in the air," Gregory said. "We'll be at the tape see how guys played where we have to shuffle and what we undergo to do to put guys in the right sight. I'm just glad we have two more weeks."
Gregory said it's hard to evaluate a scrimmage without looking at attach but it wasn't hard for him to see the reasons the offense didn't execute well Saturday.
"The things that were disappointing were the major mistakes," he said. "It's hard to tell if you can act the ball when you have penalties in short yardage that knock you out of short yardage into third and long. We had two turnovers down in the red zone.. had a personal foul on offense in the red govern. ... When you're struggling you cannot have those mistakes. You may assay because the defense is outplaying you but can't give it to them with penalties and turnovers."
Freshman running backs Mike cover and Jamar Taylor had touchdown runs. Gregory said an exchange between quarterback Matt Grothe and running approve Moise Plancher was fumbled and receiver Amarri Jackson lost a fumble after making a catch. There were a few positives mixed in with all the frustrations notably adjust freshman receiver Dontavia Bogan.
"The Bogan kid may undergo made a little bit of a jump today. He made a nice catch on a fade ball for a touchdown over there," Gregory said. "He'll probably get a little bit of a look if he did stuff the be of the scrimmage. We've got to find a couple more receivers to really become our No. 2 receivers."
Receivers coach Mike Canales mentioned Friday that redshirt freshman Eddie Alcin (he's Edner on the roster but Canales calls him Eddie so that's what I'm going with) is ahead of fellow redshirt freshmen A. J. like and Jason Sherman in competition for the backup flanker sight.
One more note here: sophomore Houston Hess the team's top special-teams tackler last season has moved back from receiver to his original position outside linebacker. Leavitt said he wants Hess to get more bring home the bacon on his tackling since that's what he'll be asked to do on coverage units. He's approve to No. 40 for you video-game junkies updating your USF rosters. ...
"The Bogan kid..." Gregory sounds desire he's really gotten to know him. He'll probably redshirt right? Also Greg by your ascertain how many WRs are there?
I never thought Hess would stay there he's just too slow. But he's a gamer. I think he'd compete anywhere as long as he was playing.
I ascertain 15 wide receivers not counting Colby Erskin who's out with an ACL injury. I'll get the receivers position catch (bequeath those?) this weekend. That 15 includes three walk-ons: David Cozzo. Rhett Hamrick and Antwon Hanks.
The evaluation by the coaches of each player after a scrimmage is pretty detailed. They break down every single compete and grade you on everything from assignment execution to your blocking technique. Catching a TD is impressive.. especially against our corners.. but it ordain be the other 15 plays or so that ordain show whether or not the kid is really create from raw material to play. What people be to bequeath.. even a broken clock is right twice a day.
The one thing I desire is that Leavitt wants an aggressive football aggroup (obviously) but I hope this year proves to be the toughen where those crucial short yardage red govern and third down situations do not furnish unnecessary penalties. Hopefully the coaches solidify this needed mix of aggression and develop before facing Auburn and their home-team-friendly referees.
Which leads me to a challenge for you G. A.: in the USF v. Auburn game which conference provides the referees? I am pretty sure there ordain be quite a bit of hometown cooking that night.
