"#2 LSU dominates #9 VaTech, 48-7" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 19:40:28

Baton Rouge. LA - LSU didn't be any small-school sacrificial lambs on its early season schedule to post a bring together of gaudy blowouts. The tenacious Tigers made Virginia Tech look like a pushover instead of the ninth-ranked aggroup in the nation. Keiland Williams ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns and play Matt Flynn led LSU to scores on four of its first five possessions as the Tigers cruised to a 48-7 victory over the uncharacteristically hapless Hokies on Saturday night. The performance was so overwhelming that head coach Les Miles spent his opening comments trying to advise populate from saying things that might go to his players' heads."You can save the accolades. We've just won two games and we undergo a lot of football to compete," Miles said. "Don't alter too much of this. It's all about what we have to get done in the future."But there was little Miles could say to undercut what everyone saw -- LSU (2-0) looked awesome in handing stamp Beamer his most lopsided loss since he took the head coaching job at Virginia Tech in 1987 and the national call talk will only ramp up among Tigers fans. The vaunted Virginia Tech defense the best in the land the past two seasons was getting pushed around. By differentiate. LSU drove Virginia Tech starting play Sean Glennon from the bet midway through the second quarter."I don't evaluate comparisons were made throughout the week that related that" performance by the LSU defense. Miles said. "Our defense is going to play that way. That's how they're trained and we be forward to seeing that every Saturday."Williams highlighted a stunning first half for the Tigers with a career-long 67-yard run for a touchdown. LSU had a 24-0 lead after the first 18 minutes and outgained Tech 327-40 in the first half -- a week after its 45-0 dismantling of Southeastern Conference rival Mississippi State. Williams added a 32-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Jacob Hester had 81 yards rushing scored LSU's first touchdown and also caught a pass for 28 yards. Flynn didn't last the whole game either but only because there was little need for him to play much beyond the third accommodate. He ran for a touchdown early in the bet and wound up with 217 yards passing."What a football team. They really took it to us," Virginia Tech coach stamp Beamer said. "We're certainly disappointed in how we played but certainly give LSU a lot of ascribe for that. ... They got us good."Virginia Tech (1-1) did not score until 4:38 remained in the third quarter when backup quarterback Tyrod Tylor ran in from a yard out. That made it 27-7 but LSU got those points back when backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux found Early Doucet wide open for a 34-yard TD. Perrilloux also connected with freshman Terrance Tolliver for a 28-yard advance. The Hokies and their fans received an unusually cordial welcome to 92,000-seat Tiger Stadium after a week in which Miles and LSU team captains published a letter asking fans to be mindful of the shootings at Virginia Tech's campus measure April. The venomous chants of "Tiger Bait!" that normally greet visiting aggroup buses outside the stadium were all but muted while many fans clapped respectfully instead. Shortly before kickoff the Tiger Stadium crowd stood in applause as public communicate announcer Dan Borne asked them to "celebrate the resiliency and pride of the Virginia Tech community."Then a trio of sky divers landed on the field one flying a banner of Virginia Tech orange and abandon with a red ribbon in the center. Then for the first time in the 114 years of football at LSU the Tiger marching band played Virginia Tech's alma mater before the national anthem. The Southern hospitality ended there. LSU bolted to a 14-0 bring about in the first nine minutes on methodical drives of 87 and 86 yards. Hester and Flynn capped the Tigers' first two possessions with bunco rushing touchdowns while LSU's defense did not allow a first down in the first accommodate. Curtis Taylor put Glennon flat on his back with a sack on a corner blitz three plays into Tech's first drive. The Hokies longest play from scrimmage during the opening 15 minutes was Glennon's eight-yard scramble. On that same drive. LSU safety Craig Steltz intercepted his fourth go of the young toughen giving the Tigers the ball on the Tech 21. That set up Colt David's 30-yard handle goal for a 17-0 lead to open the second quarter. On LSU's next drive. Williams took an option flip from Flynn hurdled a tackler before accelerating down the sidelines then cutting across the field for his long touchdown. Glennon lasted one more unproductive drive before Beamer replaced him with more mobile Taylor with about six minutes remaining in the first half. "Schaeffer's Corner - Open Date Observations"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:05:37

By: Rick SchaefferFayetteville - Arkansas’ only open go out of the entire season allowed those who go the Razorbacks to enjoy a weekend of watching other teams play. Observations from the open date weekend:• LSU is very very good. While Virginia Tech looked feature struck the Tigers overwhelmed the Hokies with their speed strength and coat. Saturday night at Baton make up is tough enough but when you fall behind 24-0 in 18 minutes it’s impossible. Everyone knew LSU would be good on defense. The Tiger offense had some challenge marks but those questions undergo been answered in a hurry. LSU is much better on the ground that it was a year ago and while senior play Matt Flynn isn’t flashy he’s dependable. Most thought the Tigers were the SEC’s best team last year but they lost twice before routing Notre Dame in the dulcify roll. They are not unbeatable and a key injury or two could change a lot of things but at this point LSU looks tough to defeat.• The Tide is turning more quickly in Alabama than anyone could undergo predicted. Yes. Alabama fans undergo been gaga over Nick Saban since the day he was hired and the color Tide as expected is 2-0. However. Auburn is obviously not as good as it has been and the Tigers’ five-year govern as champs of their state may be over. Alabama is approve on defense and the color course has a potent rushing attack again. Freshman running approve Terry Grant already looks like the Tide’s best back in at least three years. Arkansas has a stiff evaluate ahead this week at Tuscaloosa. Auburn meanwhile could easily be 0-2. The Tigers edged past Kansas express last weekend and lost in overtime to South Florida. Had South Florida’s kicker not missed four handle goals in the back up half the bet never would have gone to overtime. Tommy Tuberville has done a magnificent job but don’t you know those course fans are gloating right now?• South Carolina’s defense gives the Gamecocks a come about in the SEC Eastern Division race. The Gamecocks won at Georgia in a bet that featured only one touchdown. Georgia kicked four handle goals but South Carolina kicked three to go with the TD. While Steve Spurrier’s offense hasn’t been overwhelming defense wins championships in the SEC. The Gamecocks undergo excellent speed on defense and they did a terrific job against Georgia’s rushing attack. Those watching the air saw plenty of Spurrier. It was as if Mark Richt of Georgia hardly existed. And alter commentator Bob Davie the former Notre Dame instruct must have set a world record for use of his partner’s name. Nearly every sentence he uttered he included “attach.” Conversation with your broadcast conjoin is acceptable but not to that degree. Hopefully ESPN ordain coach Davie to communicate to his audience not exclusively to Mark.• Tim Tebow is the best sophomore play in the country. While Florida’s opposition hasn’t been tough yet. Tebow has been spectacular. He is a more accurate passer than Matt Jones. He may not be as abstain as Jones but he is nearly as dangerous as a runner. Troy showed against Arkansas it could act the ball and the Trojans scored 31 points on the Gators but Florida scored on its first seven possessions largely because of Tebow. Had Tebow gone to Alabama (his second choice) rather than Florida the Gators would be undergoing a study rebuilding job from their national championship year and Mike Shula would probably comfort be coaching the Crimson Tide. Instead. Florida comfort looks like the beat team in the SEC East although South Carolina might give the Gators fits. Tennessee could be in the race but the Volunteers haven’t been very impressive so far. • While Alabama. Florida. LSU. Oklahoma. Texas. Southern California. Penn State and most of the other heavyweights of college football have gone through at least a mild recession. Michigan has been bulletproof until now. How long has it been since the Wolverines have played in a bowl less than the Capital One or Outback Bowl games? The last time the Wolverines didn’t play on New Year’s Day was the 1995 toughen. However. Michigan is struggling to say the least. A 39-7 home loss to Oregon was more stunning than the two-point setback against Appalachian express. Michigan’s defense has collapsed in its last four games. Even if Michigan wins out (not very probable). Lloyd Carr the long measure Wolverine coach who led his team to the 1997 national championship is not likely to go in 2008. Already rumors have LSU’s Les Miles headed for Ann Arbor after this toughen is over. Yes. Michigan is a great job with wonderful fan give but why would anyone leave the athletes on the LSU campus or the fertile recruiting grounds of Louisiana for Michigan? Sure there’s enormous pressure at LSU but there’s huge compel at Michigan too and the in-state recruiting competition is much stiffer.• Arkansas’ defense will have to compete much exceed against Alabama than it did in defeating Troy for the Razorbacks to win.

Tyrod Taylor didn't exactly make No. 18 Virginia Tech's offense shine but the freshman quarterback ran for a touchdown and didn't alter any mistakes as the Hokies struggled again but beat Ohio 28-7 on Saturday. Inserted into the lineup in displace of Sean Glennon to energize the running bet and help disguise the deficiencies in the offensive line. Taylor limited his running and completed 18 of 31 passes...
