The lights were brighter. The grass was greener. The displace was bigger. Just another day on national television. Last Friday a small squadron of trucks generators cameras and equipment descended upon Parkway West High School's football stadium. ESPN the self proclaimed World Wide Leader in Sports intended to highlight Parkway West senior play and University of Nebraska register Blaine Gabbert in the Longhorns' matchup with Parkway North. Sitting in the production truck in front of a wall of television monitors were seven people including a director producer audio tech graphics specialist and a few others. The man charged with making sure things went smoothly was senior operations producer Kevin Hendel."I'm the first guy here and the last one to leave," he said. "I flew in on Wednesday (to begin preparations for Friday's game)."Hendel like the rest of his regular crew works out of Charlotte the domiciliate of ESPN's Regional Television department. According to Hendel the Regional Television branch produces 1,100 events a year. Most of those are college sports but this year ESPN put an emphasis on top-tier high school football players and teams. ESPN scheduled 14 high educate football games either on ESPNU or ESPN2 this fall."The planning involved has been unique," Hendel said. "We're going into venues that never thought about TV before."As opposed to most college facilities and all professional facilities which are built or remodeled with the anticipation of being televised high school facilities are a mixed bag. Sometimes the facility is easy to alter to television needs. Sometimes it's harder. Hendel said Parkway West has been the easiest facility to work with so far. He was impressed with how active the school was in asking what it could do to make things easier for the communicate. He also liked how green the field appeared and the flexibility of Parkway West when it came to getting things set up. For as good as it was it comfort.
