"Associate banks should ideally merge with State Bank of India" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-10 03:29:28

EMPLOYEES OF the Bangalore-headquartered State Bank of Mysore (SBM) one of the oldest banks in the country have resorted to a nationwide agitation. What is the reason? Big brother State Bank of India (SBI) recently proposed to take within its fold all the seven associate banks viz. the State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur the State Bank of Indore the State Bank of Patiala the State Bank of Saurashtra the State Bank of Travancore the State Bank of Mysore and the State Bank of Hyderabad. SBI the largest bank in the country already will emerge much larger post-takeover of the said seven associate banks. The State Bank of Mysore Employees’ Union (SBMEU) however smells a rat; it terms the proposal a pure business tactic aimed at acquiring the large network of branches huge assets and clientele of the associate banks. SBMEU claims that if the proposal is put through the ‘service-oriented’ approach being primarily followed by the associate banks will be replaced by the ‘profit-oriented’ approach of the parent bank viz.. SBI! Much as SBMEU may dislike being taken over by the parent bank viz.. SBI it is preposterous on its part to allege that the parent viz. the SBI is profit-oriented while the children viz. the associate banks are service-oriented. If this allegation is true how come SBM’s PLR is 13.25% while that of the SBI is only 12.75%? As for deposits. SBM offers interest in the range of 8.25% - 8.50% on deposits between 1 and 5 years. SBI offers interest in the range of 8% - 8.50% on deposits between 1 and 5 years. Apparently ground reality conveys otherwise – SBI lends at a cheaper rate than SBM. According to SBMEU the associate banks have a distinct history and close rap-port with their customers. Yes associate banks do have a distinct history but that does not imply that they have a close rapport with their customers. If what SBMEU says is true how come it is not as conspicuous as Canara Bank or Syndicate Bank in its home State of Karnataka forget the rest of India? Is the SBMEU justified in being proud of the fact that it was established under the patronage of the then Maharaja of Mysore. Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar? If I were an SBM employee I would never associate my bank with the so-called Mysore Maharaja. For the information of SBMEU the Mysore Maharaja was a traitor who offered to join hands with the British if the latter helped him in retaining his kingdom! He did not want the Kingdom of Mysore to become a part of India! It is true that when the Subsidiary Banks Act was passed an assurance was given that the regional character and identity of the associate banks would be protected. It was relevant then in the nascent republic of India. What is the ‘regional character’ the SBMEU is talking about now? Can the SBMEU define the ‘national character’ in that case? After all it is six of one and half a dozen of the other. Should the former be subsumed under the latter or the latter be subsumed under the former? Would the SBMEU care to explain? SBMEU’s argument that when no other bank lent to agriculture small scale industries and small business. SBM came to their rescue is unpalatable to say the least. Such lending was pioneered by SBI in the country. Syndicate bank did it too though on a much larger scale. In fact when it comes to inclusive banking. SBM or SBI for that matter was nowhere near Syndicate Bank in terms of the initiative taken! In fact. SBM (Rajajinagar 1st Block Branch. Bangalore) once issued me a cheque book without incorporating my account number on the leaves! I noticed it only when I used the first leaf from the book to draw some money. When I presented the cheque for encashment at the bank’s counter the officer blamed me for the lapse whereupon I gave him a mouthful. It is not my point that SBI is superior but the argument that SBM is service oriented should be taken at face value. As I said earlier it is six of one and half a dozen of the other. It is time SBMEU understood that a shakeout is imminent in the banking industry once we throw open our doors to foreign banks by 2009 in line with out commitment to WTO. Only those banks which boast of adequate capital adequacy ratio state-of-the-art technology economy of scale and quality human resources to name a few will be in a position to survive. SBM may have been relevant in the days of yore when the Maharaja was the ruler of the kingdom of Mysore but not now. Consolidation of Banking Sectoris need of hour. After April -2009 when the Banking Industry open for Foreogn Banks and Basel-II compliance be there all the Small banks have to merge with Bigger entity for their Survival we rememeber the Darwin theory '' Survival of the Fittest'' as every Banks has to maintain their Capital in respect of the Risk Associated with the Assets. The Associates Banks Except one or two are not in a position to "EKLA CHALO". Basically they have regionalBase only and Entire Capital Base is of Parent Bank SBI,If they do not come forward for the Proposal Of SBI for Smmoth Merger. All the Associations And Unions of these Associate Banks will lose its fight and Ultimately SBI will either Sell these Banks to other Foreign Banks or FIIs or forced them to merge without any issues to be discussed. Also After The SBI Approval of the MOU signed By UNION of SBS the Remaining Employee will come out from their BOND of Union and JOIN the hands for Merger with SBI for better benefit and future security. Mereger And The consolidation of State Bank is a certainity and employee's unions and officer's associations should better engage themselves in fruitful talks with SBI to get the best package for their members. SBI on its part should directly interact with the officers and employees of associate banks to find out their cuncerns and the ways to mitigate them. Of late,it has been noticed that the unions and associations dealing with the merger issues are not reflecting popular sentiments and it is for SBI and Associate Banks to find out common concerns of the staff of Associate Banks. These processes would go a long way in preparing State Bank to become a Global Bank and to retain their young officers and employees within the Bank to face global competition. Neeraj I totally agree with the views of Shivkumar. In the era of merger,in the era of cost effectiveness in the era of "bada hai to behtar hai" it seems that SBMEU are not wanting to realize what will happen post 2009? After all what is the status of SBI when come to the size among Asian banks(forget about world)and what will happen when level playing field will be granted to foreign banks after 2009. Where will Associate BANKS will stay? I don't think any staff retrenchment was there when Tata purchase Corus but yes retrenchment will be there when companies will show losses. Unions of the merging banks should not fear about retrenchement as long as they are doing good business and are performing. Non performer in this world should certainly be marginalised and removed.

"India?s Vishwanathan Anand wins World Chess Championship in Mexico" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 01:39:49

Vishwanathan Anand became the world chess champion on Saturday after winning the global tournament in Mexico. In doing so he replaced Vladimir Kramnik of Russia as champion winning the tournament on points after tying a be with Hungarian Peter Leko on the 14th day of the oppose which he dominated from the start. The tournament saw eight of the world’s top chess brains battle it out in the competition from which Anand came out unscathed. The 37-year-old Indian had previously won the world championship in 2000 but the achievement was valued less since at the time the chess world was split between two rival world titles. While I’m a prolific Correspondence chess player(Over 1,000 games lifetime with over 100 going at present). I don’t go the world chess scene much anymore. Much desire my baseball viewing habits. I knew the status of the game(sport) much exceed twenty years ago. Like many US chessplayers my age. I can tell you all about Bobby Fischer. My familiarity with his successor. Anatoly Karpov is almost as strong.(We both like to play a certain. I’ve played it over 70 times. Only Karpov and four other have played it as often or more). Only by turn fluke do I know anything about what Annad likes to play. A 2003 Golden Knights bet of exploit following one of the World Champ’s 1999 games for 25 moves. Opening databases are wonderful aren’t they? Till your game leaves them then you’re on your own. I barely managed a draw in the 2003 bet. The way the World Championships are conducted has changed. For 25-30 years starting in 1964 the champion was determined via a series of Interzonal tournaments followed by elimination matches. This method put into place after some said the old Candidates tournaments were too prone to Soviet cheating. Now we’ve go back to a system much like the one used from 1948-1962. Congratulations to Annad. Now are Indians about Annad winning the World title again or aggroup India winning the recent.

"Why do doctors evade tax?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 19:08:15

Doctors tend to avoid tax on their earnings. Nor do they keep any preserve concerning the patients they interact. Records will be of great help if the treated patient is required to change surgery in future. The regulators should act in the matter. HELLO all Indians out there! When we fall egest and go to the doctor for treatment how many of us seek a account for the charges paid to the adulterate who has treated us? undergo we as responsible Indians ever thought about it? Has the media ever thought about it? The media has all the time in the world to show live updates of a play be but has no time to disseminate critical news to the public. I quote the following incident to explain how doctors evade tax on their earnings: I went to a clinic in Bangalore to get myself checked by a doctor. I hardly spent 15 minutes with the doctor. He charged me Rs 100 and made a note of it in his diary. I had waited in the queue for about an hour and by the time my turn arrived the adulterate had checked 10 patients; apparently he had collected Rs 1000 in just an hour @ Rs 100 per patient. I also observed that after 5 PM the doctor busies himself with patients till 10 PM; thus on an average he should earn Rs 4,000 – 5,000 in five hours. And I query if the adulterate ever pays tax on the money that he earns. And he does not keep any preserve either concerning the patient which could prove problematic to the patient if the patient is required to change a surgery in future. why do populate ask doctors about their income????there are a lot of alternative medicine practitioners about whom we go across everyday."push a look for drink the throat-cure asthma"'surgery without instruments"'paying babas loads of donation"if the community of doctors is to be scrutinised let all these people be under scrutiny as welllets alter the system of medicine....... clean....... everyone wants claritylets face it......1) national PMT's are the toughest exams2) only a marginal population of students crack them 3) and again its the 20% of the most meticulous students, who change a clinical subject for post graduation(as for the rest all of us do get a bill for pathological tests et al)4) and after going through the grind of 10 years of constant updating.. in which you suffer the best part of your life,at somewhere around 35 a doctor establishes a clinical learn good enough to earn him the aforementioned amounton the contrary, the courses and competition in other fields of alternative medicines are not suchand as far as my knowledge extends, babas dont even have a registration for curing patientsso if populate still accept in them, people do not delay to pay lacs on luxurious vehicles, lap tops, mobile phones... then why do they think it is unjust to pay the doctors what is their due!!!!!!!as far as tax is concerned,i believe that lets bring clarity in every handle if medical sector is to pay then make it universal........ alike for every person practising medicine

Posted on 2007-10-10 19:15:45

LORD RAM represents the entire ethos of Indian culture and traditions and we don’t be a award from any politician to open whether he existed or not. Venerated yoga guru Swami Ramdev stated this. He said that Ram existed in the hearts and souls of the populate and his presence in our lives is beyond any question. Lord Rama’s history is the history of India and if someone wants to depart his presence then he will undergo to kill very existence of country called Bharta said Swami Ramdev. It is worthwhile to have in mind that a huge controversy had erupted in India after Archeological Survey of India (ASI) submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court questioning the very existence of Lord Rama. It was only after the intervention of Congress president Sonia Gandhi that the affidavit was withdrawn by UPA government as the government wanted to forbid political repercussions. The affidavit filed by ASI instead of confining itself to express that there is no historical proof regarding the existence of Adam’s connect questioned the very existence of ennoble Rama. The affidavit was filed in the Supreme Court over the air of building Sethusamudamram which is basically an economic zone.
