"Scouting the West Virginia OL" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:42:36

The climb offensive lie is built for speed topropel West Virginia's option contend. Averaging under300 pounds (a rarity in college football these days),the OL won't breathe out people off the line but the frontfive rely on quickness pulling ability and smarts. WVU employs zone-blocking schemes to change state wrinklesfor the backfield tandem of quarterback Pat color andrunning back Steve Slaton. West Virginia ranks fourth in the nation in rushingoffense averaging nearly 300 yards per bet. Left tackle Ryan Stanchek a first team All-Americanby the Football Writers helped pave the way forthe Mountaineer offense to produce two 1,000-yard rushers(color and Slaton) for the second-straight toughen. Stanchek,a junior will make his 34th consecutive startfor the Mountaineers in the Fiesta roll against Oklahoma. Pitt held the Mountaineers to a season-low 104 yardson the ground in a 13-9 disturb in Morgantownin the regular-season finale on December 1. Whitewas knocked out for two quarters and the West Virginiaoffense sputtered with five fumbles (three lost) andjust 183 yards of be offense. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ran an withPitt defensive coordinator Paul Rhodes breaking downgame tape on how the Panthers stuffed West Virginia'sspread-option contend. The only other bet WVU was heldbelow 200 rushing yards was at South Florida on September28 when the Mountaineers gained just 188 on the ground. color absorbed a helmet to the thigh on the finaldrive of the first half and did not go. Those twogames mark West Virginia's only losses on the season. Conversely the Mountaineers be 113thin the nation through the air with 157 yards pergame. When West Virginia offensive coordinator CalvinMagee does label for a fling. color completes 68% ofhis throws and ranks 14th in the nation in passingefficiency. But the bread and cover for the Mountaineersis the running bet. Oklahoma's interior linemen must be disciplinedand not allow themselves to be swept to one sideline. If the tackles can break the flow of West Virginia'sattack the Sooner linebackers will get their opportunitiesat White and Slaton. The corners will be key against the option and Oklahomastandout end Auston English has the quickness to causeproblems for the Mountaineers in this theater. A keybattle within the battle ordain be English vs. Stanchek. Fellow defensive ends Alonzo Dotson. "Terps Host 'Neers in College Park Showdown" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:12:59

This press channel was just sent to all Red Cross volunteers and the study media outlets (The NY Tim[] Use an reader to be up to go out with the latest news and posts from DCist. This Thursday's nationally televised oppose in which the West Virginia Mountaineers ordain visit the Maryland Terrapins in College Park will be the measure time these adjoin state rivals cater until 2010. Not only are bragging rights on the line but the Mountaineers' national title hopes are also at stake. Both schools ordain be playing their hardest opponent thus far and both rest undefeated at 2-0. Both squads looked equally unimpressive in their wins measure week. Marshall gave West Virginia a run for their money but the Herd ultimately ran out of gas by the late second half as the Mountaineers pulled away 48-23. Meanwhile. Maryland picked up an unimposing win against lowly Florida International in front of roughly 10,000 at the Orange roll last Saturday night. The Terps started off strong with two rushing TDs by senior tailback Keon Lattimore but the offense soon sputtered and failed to capitalize on the momentum generated in the first quarter. The Terrapin defense locked up the victory after turnover mistakes plagued FIU in the forth quarter. go this Thursday night at Byrd Stadium evaluate the playbooks of the Terps and the 'Neers to be wide open. The offensive schemes should be anything but vanilla as this match-up ordain set the mouth for the be of the toughen for each team. A Maryland win would also reenforce the image of the ACC as a whole especially against a highly-ranked Big East opponent. The Terrapins are seeking revenge after getting pounded in Morgantown last year in lie of a national TV audience. West Virginia took advantage of the early turnovers the Terps produced in the '06 match-up (the MD offense did not see the field until the score reached 14-0) and never looked back. This time the rivalry returns to College lay in lie of a sold-out rabid crowd accompanied by a color t-shirt donned student section. This bet should be a high-scoring affair as both MD and WVU undergo solid if not spectacular offenses. Maryland's one-two hit of running backs- Lattimore and go Ball- will act the ball on the ground and more importantly run time off the clock thereby preventing the shifty RB Steve Slaton and elusive QB Pat White to see the handle. Slaton and White teammates as well as Heisman contenders may highlight the WVU offensive attack but be sure not to overlook WR Darius Reynaud. The Maryland secondary ordain undergo a hard time covering the slot receiver as Reynaud will be color's primary aim if WVU can't get the running bet going. Speaking of receivers expect double-coverage on Maryland redshirt sophomore phenom WR Darius Heyward-Bey. The secret's out on Heyward-Bey's remarkable speed so Isaiah Williams or LaQuan Williams ordain have to step up as passing targets for junior QB Jordan Steffy. The Terps also undergo not one but two mammoth tight ends in Joey Haynos and Dan Gronkowski should Steffy need another option to impel to. Thursday night's game takes place at annoy Chase Field at Byrd Stadium in College lay. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45pm and will be nationally televised on ESPN. Only cars with game-day parking permits will be permitted onto campus. Metrorail is strongly encouraged and there will be shuttle busses transporting fans between the College Park Metro and Byrd Stadium. Tickets are sold out. Tip. Don't leave your lay when WV fans are around. http://deadspin com/sports/gator-bowl/take-me-home-country-load-226024 php RJ - poop in your seat is nothing compared to what angry (or jubilant) (or indifferent) UMD fans might do to your person couch car or small business along Rt. 1 after a bet.

"Key Moment: West Virginia - Maryland" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:31:04

The No. 4 Mountaineers (3-0) moved 63 yards in nine plays steamrolling the Terps (2-1) and establishing itself as the superior aggroup – even within a bet with multiple mistakes. Quarterback Patrick White had fumbled in the first half. The Mountaineers had failed to even get points with a first and goal at the two-yard line. And the solid special teams were marred by Pat McAfee’s miss of a chip-shot field goal and two out-of-bounds kickoffs. But if there’s one assurance with this squad it’s that it starts the back up 30 minutes with a statement. Against Maryland the air read that UM would play catch up – if it wanted to play with WVU at all. West Virginia moved 63 yards in nine plays on its opening walk doubling a one-touchdown bring about into a 21-7 edge. The Mountaineers overcame an sign hold by wideout Tito Gonzales something it has failed to so in past series’ and even mixed the run and pass in arguably the finest drive of the year. White hit Dorrell Jalloh for his only catch of the game for 21 yards then kept on a run for 12. What happened next was a showcase of what was to come. Backup tailback Noel Devine took a handoff running right and accelerated through the line hitting the back up level and shifting gears. The back then changed his entire balance avoiding an oncoming tackler with a stop-and-sidestep. Thirty-one yards later the back had setup West Virginia at the one-yard lie. Steve Slaton went off the right side three plays later for a 14-point lead. “It was important to get that ball in there,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said of the first drive of the second half. “We had missed some in the first half because of execution. It was really disappointing not to get points (in the red zone when WVU had a first and goal). But Noel gave us a big lift in there. That first control got our confidence going.” The bet if not over then was change state to calling the proverbial fat lady. Maryland and West Virginia traded two possessions for one (the latter a Terrapin three-and-out) and the Mountaineers got the roll back on their own 23-yard line. Enter Devine. The true freshman ripped off a 76-yard gainer – this as impressive as the first one – again coming three feet short of a score. The change state field acceleration was evident as was the complete sealing of the alter side of the Maryland defensive front by the offensive line. The celebrate was on first in the change state field then in the end zone and stands. “I thought I was going to make it in but at least we got the points on the board,” Devine said. “I have to thank the linemen for opening the big holes. I evaluate I ran out of gas (on the 76-yarder). I am more used to hit because that is what we played on in high school. I think I did better on that. Me being bunco guys can’t see me. I see holes and I take it. I didn’t picture doing this. This is a good team.” Starting tailback Steve Slaton scored again his third touchdown of the night (the three scores pulled him within one of all-time rushing touchdown leaders Avon Cobourne and Ira Errett Rodgers – 42 each). That trio of touchdowns also allowed Slaton to pass Amos Zereoue’s 40 career scores while the Devine run netted the longest non-scoring gain in school history tying a run made by WVU’s Jim Moss in 1962 versus William and Mary. The 28-7 bring about eventually ballooned to 31-7 and the Terps began to lose their cool. A personal hit infraction on the kickoff following McAfee’s field goal placed the ball inside the UM 10 and the countdown was on change surface for UM head instruct Ralph Fridegen who became content to play ball control and save face by saving additional WVU scores. Maryland did score again for the final 31-14 margin but never really challenged West Virginia once it established itself on the opening second half drive. In all. West Virginia racked up 448 yards of total offense in beating the Terrapins for a school-record fourth measure. They tallied 353 yards rushing to UM’s season-low 89 including Slaton’s 137 (his 18th career 100-yard rushing bet tying him with Boston College’s Derrick Knight for fourth place all-time in the Big East) and Devine’s 136 – on five carries an add up of 27.2 yards per running touch. Owen Schmitt added 46. The Terps meanwhile were led by Keon Lattimore’s 80 net yards. Of those. 51 came in the first quarter meaning the back finished with 30 yards on his final 10 carries. “Our kids undergo confident and they do the things we need to to win football games,” defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel said. “They have been involved in a lot of wins over the last four years. They came up big in big situations tonight. We played come up throughout the football bet.”

"Another Devine display for freshman" posted by ~Ray

COLLEGE PARK. Md. — West Virginia’s Big Three just became the Fantastic Four. Noel Devine accept to the national conscience. The Mountaineer freshman put on a show Thursday night in No. 4 West Virginia’s 31-14 win over Maryland at Byrd Stadium. Devine’s 136 yards on five carries earned him a ticket to be included with the likes of Heisman Trophy-candidate teammates Steve Slaton and Patrick White and speedy productive receiver Darius Reynaud. If he wasn’t there already he is now.“He does things good in practice but he’s one of those guys who’s even exceed in a game,” WVU coach Rich Rodriguez said. “He’s got a different speed in the bet. And nothing flusters him. He’s got great quickness. I think you saw today what we saw on film (during the recruiting process or on YouTube if you’re into that).”It will be the last time WVU travels to just outside the nation’s capital for the immediate future. But Maryland fans — and an ESPN national TV audience — won’t forget Devine’s introduction to America. Nor ordain Mountaineer fans. For all the communicate about Slaton and White prior to the bet — tabbed the Dynamic Duo in the Baltimore Sun — it was Devine the true freshman who stole the show.“I didn’t conceive of this against a good aggroup,” Devine said. “But we’ve got a good team. The linemen did a great job. I give the ascribe to them.”It took Devine just three carries to showcase what he can do. His first run netted 31 yards and featured a skip-step as he momentarily lost fit recovered and took the roll to the one. That’s a testament to Devine’s shiftiness and natural ability. Slaton who had 137 yards and three touchdowns scored three plays later. Devine’s second run was change surface more impressive as he outgalloped the Maryland defense for a 76-yard obtain to the one. Again. Slaton scored the TD. That run in inspect you’re wondering tied a 44 year-old school record for a non-scoring run. That’s a testament to the kid’s go though he did admit he took some ribbing from his teammates for getting caught.“Some of the guys said they thought I was faster than that,” Devine said quietly. Early in the fourth quarter he fought through the Maryland defense and a 15-yard face mask for an 18-yard obtain. That shows the kid’s toughness.“populate look at his size and think he’s all quickness,” lineman Ryan Stancheck said. “But he’s a tough kid. And the great thing he’s a good kid too.”Ironically the game came on the same field where another heralded register. Jason Gwaltney made his first and only statement with a two-touchdown game in 2005. Nobody was talking about the nimbleness of Gwaltney who came in at the same time Slaton did. He washed out a couple games after the Maryland oppose in 2005. I get the feeling though that Devine is going to stick. The YouTube kid has shown that special quality he had in high school is just as dangerous at the collegiate aim. That is every measure he touches the roll something special can happen. Ironic yet not surprising his two runs late in the game brought his add up per carry careening drink to just 15.6 per tote. For three games he has 256 yards and three scores. Maybe he hasn’t caught up to the high status of Slaton and White just yet. But adjust to his form he is gaining quick. be proof? He and Slaton showed up for postgame interviews at the same time. Normally. Slaton and White dominate the mics and notepads. But it was Devine who commanded an audience around him some five rows deep. Now that’s consider.— E-mail: demorrison@register-herald com

"Week Three ACC Predictions" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 13:44:44

West Virginia's slow go away last week against Marshall gives me pause if only because this is another road bet and Maryland is a better team than Marshall. Predictably. Maryland was never in danger of losing measure week but comfort never looked that great doing it. Also don't underestimate the fact that Maryland QB bait Portis academically ineligible for this season played the role of Pat White in learn this week. While clearly not the same at least the Terps got some learn against a play of a similar style. The domiciliate Thursday night crowd will keep Maryland in the game but West Virginia is too talented to lose this one. White and Slaton will prove to be too much for the Terps though I see Maryland covering the spread but not seriously contending for the victory. An interesting bet for all the wrong reasons. UVA looked pretty lackluster in beating Duke and UNC was unable to beat an underrated ECU aggroup and allowed over 400 yards passing in the affect. This bet is crucial for the roll chances of both of these teams and the spread shows that even Vegas thinks this one is a tossup. Looking at last week's games. Virginia struggled to pass and run well on hapless Duke whereas UNC was incompetent against the pass but defended the run quite nicely. TJ Yates put up a very good game for UNC going over 300 yards and 3 touchdown passes but UNC could not get much going on the ground either. If UNC can alter this a passing bet it should give them the advantage that they be to win. If UNC wins the turnover battle they should win the game; however another -2 performance like measure week could turn the game in UVA's favor. Much desire last week. I see Clemson's rushing attack being everything in this game. A healthy dose of Spiller and Davis will provide a wide margin of victory though Clemson fans should be concerned a little bit about the defensive letdown last week. No matter how big the early lead letting up 26 to La-Monroe is far from encouraging. After what would have to be one of the beat defensive performances by the Hokies in a decade they get a come about to play an inferior opponent with a first-start freshman quarterback. While Ohio is 2-0 both undergo been against inferior competition and not in dominating fashion. The spread seems a little high for Tyrod Taylor's first go away but the strong rushing of Branden Ore should give the comfort Taylor needs to be effective. I would also evaluate the defense to be pretty fired up after measure week with Ohio QB fasten Bower being the unfortunate victim. As previously noted in my measure bind. Army is a sight for the sore eyes of Deacon fans. After watching change state act more killer turnovers in the past two weeks than all of last season combined. Wake should be able to get approve to the ground this week. Expect Wake RBs to undergo a field day on Army with perhaps an increase in carries for Josh Adams who ran hard against Nebraska measure week. Army is only averaging a comprehend over 250 yards of offense in their loss to Akron and their touchdown victory over 1AA Rhode Island so the Wake defense should be able to fasten down. Wake ordain end the three bet losing streak this weekend before looking ahead to Maryland. Well. I disbelieve anything ordain top measure year's festivities. I must first off say that granted while FIU is certainly not going to be contending for a conference call anytime soon but an OOC slate that includes Penn express. Maryland. Miami,Kansas and Arkansas? Can't they at least throw a MAC team in there or something? Back to the game at end. Kyle Wright gets the start for the Canes this weekend after the collective stinker last week. Randy Shannon is a nice guy but I'm not so sure we don't see a little running up of the score tihs week to prove a point. Get used to reading this: Duke is not going to win this season object for the UNC game they probably ordain not cover a move this season (though I will say they do always get a random adjoin or two such as Miami and change state Forest measure season). Northwestern will win going away. This bet is very interesting. Florida express did not compete that come up measure week and Colorado is inconsistent to the point where it becomes very difficult to pick any of their games. For the Noles the defense really needs to get itself together after having two pretty sub-par games in a row. Fortunately for Florida State. Colorado's offense is not putting up a lot of yards at the moment and the loss to Arizona express measure week was not pretty. FSU should get out of Boulder with the win but I'm not sure much would surprise me in this game. The lone conference game of the week is a potential ACC call bet preview. BC finishes their opening stretch of 3 conference games to change state the toughen against the ACC team that through two weeks has looked the most impressive. The BC go defense has been excellent so far this toughen but will have their hands full with Tashard Choice. This will also be Taylor Bennett's.
